Banana Tree (Banana Leaf) - Clapham
75-79 Battersea Rise, Clapham, London SW11 1HN
17-02-2011
Great place for Thai food which to me is on a par with the much more expensive Busaba Eathai. It was busy when I got there 7.30 on a Wednesday night but we didn't have to wait long for a table.
Food is served quickly and is excellent value for money. I had a delicious fish dish with basil leaves and was very surprised at the generous portions of deep fried fish.
It's only a five minute walk away from Clapham Junction station and as others have said, beats Wagamama big time
Kopapa - Covent Garden
32-34 Monmouth Street, Seven Dials, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9HA
09-02-2011
Kopapa doesn't just serve tapas, there's a good all day menu and apparently the brunch is worth a try. However, the tapas they serve is very good being a mixture of fusion Kiwi food.
The sticky coconut ribs really were a stand out dish and for one person the portion is pretty big, certainly worth sharing with someone else. The coconut sauce made them slightly less sticky than I expected.
Cassava chips with guacamole & salsa sauce seem to have replaced the polenta chips mentioned in an earlier review. They were a light and fluffy alternative to potato chips and I'm sure they're not low fat, but I like to think they have less fat than normal chips.
I had the fried squid as what I thought would be a main course, but was warned by the waiter it was only tapas sized. He was wrong (either that or I was so stuffed on ribs) as it was a very good sized portion that to me felt easily as large as a main plate! So that was a lovely surprise, specially as it was delicious, served with rocket, spiced nuts and aubergine.
My dessert was a light pistachio and ginger parfait with rhubarb. It looked remarkably like cream cheese with herbs covered in a tomato sauce. However once I bit into it all thoughts of it being cheese or savoury disappeared. A good refreshing end to the meal.
The drinks were a little on the pricey side (well if you were going to have cocktails) so my firend and I shared a carafe of wine which complemented the food well.
I'd definitely go back as it's a great location and a relaxed atmosphere, with attentive service & well presented food.
All Star Lanes - Bayswater
6 Porchester Gardens, Whiteleys, Bayswater, London W2 4DB
26-01-2011
I've been to the AllStar Lanes a few times in the past. Holborn twice and last night was my second time at the Bayswater branch as part of the #BowledOverByQype event.
I'm not the world's best bowler and always feel like having a Fred Flintstone moment whenever I pick up a bowling ball (I loved the Flintstones as a kid & bowling looked fun, but I never got to bowl until I was 'grown up'). I really love the old Americana retro styling of the lanes here, so it was good to see the menu matched the decor well.
I came just expecting burgers and nothing else, so it was a pleasant surprise to see chilli, seared salmon, pork butt cheeks with giant baked beans and ribs on the menu too. Fred Flintstone would have been happy with the portion of ribs which was about the length of my cat (he's not a small cat) and amazingly, with the help of a friend, I polished them off . The meat was meltingly tender and worked well with the accompanying baked apple (apple & ribs - made a combo - who knew? - I felt like I had a bit of my five a day with that).
The bowling was fun and made even more fun by the karaoke machine for those who were waiting to bowl. Like Siany, I'm seriously considering hiring the private room for a party!
Will certainly be back - yet again!
The Commonwealth Club - Embankment
25 Northumberland Avenue, Town Centre, London WC2N 5AP
20-01-2011
It's very easy to walk past this restaurant, as from the outside you'd have no idea that it housed a bar and place to eat. I imagine this is because a lot of members clubs deliberately want to hide themselves, so only the select few know where they are.
Luckily for us The Commonwealth Club's kitchen is now open to the public and it's a great place to enjoy some extremely well presented and tasty food in a light and airy non crowded environment.
You feel as though you're in one of the more accessible private member's clubs, with very attentive service and attention to detail, but without having to pay for the privilege of joining.
Monkfish with orzo pasta was wonderful (although I probably could have done with a larger portion), but that wouldn't have left room for the very well cooked venison & pretty tasty apple cake with blackberry variations which followed. One of the better combinations of Apple & Blackberry (although a tech partnership of mobile handsets did come to mind).
The dessert came with a standout glass of sweet cider which was a real eye opener (or should that be tongue opener) for me, as I'm not a fan of cider.
I was kindly treated to a meal here as part of a Qype Guru event, but having looked at the prices on the menu, I'd definitely return, as it's very affordable for the standard of food & general ambience.
Relais de Venise - Marylebone
120 Marylebone Lane, Marylebone, London W1U 2PA

It's a cool idea to only have one thing on the menu as it makes ordering pretty quick, which is more than can be said for the wait outside. I normally REALLY hate queueing for food in London, as you're never normally more than a five minute walk away from another good eaterie. A twenty minute queue on a Wednesday night in November was a bit excessive in my opinion (but in spite of looking up alternatives on my friend's iPad we stayed the course).
It was sort of worth the wait, as after a while you just think, we've waited this long we may as well stay. Would I do it again? Probably not.
Steak was well cooked, the sauce tasty, the mustardy dressing on the salad was very mustardy and with two helpings, I was full.
Profiteroles were yummy (although extremely cold fillings - not sure if it was icecream) and the tarte citron very good.
I'm glad I went but for another twenty minute queue it would have to be super special.
Inamo - Soho
134 Wardour Street, Soho, London W1F 8ZR
11-11-2010
This was my third visit to Inamo & probably the best of the three. As most people have said it is a geek's paradise to be able to order food from the interactive tables, have a peek into the kitchen through the table's webcam, change the background of the table & play memory games if you're really bored.
I think what made this the best visit was the attentiveness of the staff. We had a bit of confusion about the time our table was booked & also arrived early but we were made welcome in the cocktail bar downstairs. We were seated five minutes after our booking time, with many apologies from the receptionist over the confusion (it seriously wasn't a big deal for us)
I stupidly ordered my main course about two minutes after my starter, so it meant it was sitting around on the table for a while before my friend's main arrived. One of the waiters kindly noticed this & offered to heat up the food.
When our final bill arrived, the two cocktails we had downstairs were the wrong cocktails, they were immediately taken off the bill. We asked about putting the right cocktails back on & the waiter said "No probs have them on the house as you shouldn't have had the wrong ones put on". Who were we to say no to free cocktails ;-)
The staff were all extremely friendly & one of the waiters seemed genuinely excited about the opening of their new branch (Regent's Street) in December, giving a great description of what it would look like.
The food was very tasty, beautifully presented and yes, as others have said, maybe the main course portions were a tad small for the price, but if you stock up on the delicious Baby ribs and vegetable tamaki beforehand you won't feel hungry.
It was my friend's first visit & she was really impressed & can't wait to return with her boyfriend. I'll definitely be back again and looking forward to trying the new branch when it opens!
Monsieur M - Shoreditch
380 Old Street, London EC1V 9LT

Really good option for Thai / Vietnamese food on Old Street. Having just come back from a holiday in Bali (where the food is also very Thai and Vietnamese influenced) I was keen to remind myself of "London" Indonesian food. The "spring rolls" which were re-named Autumn rolls were delicious with a burst of coriander and mint freshening your palate. We were lucky enough to roll our own, which was an interesting experience and I'd certainly like to try to make them myself.
The red chicken curry was tasty (perhaps a bit too much salad garnish for me) and served in a large asymmetric bowl piled on top of the rice. It was incredibly colourful and didn't have the 'overcooked' flavour that some Thai curries in the UK have.
Staff were very friendly and Marc (the owner) was the perfect genial host.
I'd certainly like to try the other dishes on the menu and I like the fact that there are only six dishes to choose from (perfect for an indecisive Libran like me).
Blue Posts - Fitzrovia
81 Newman Street, Soho, London W1T 3ET
06-07-2010
It's a amazing there are so many pubs called The Blue Posts within striking distance of each other. This particular one is great and has all the hallmarks of a good Samuel Smiths pub (cheap drinks and really nice wheat beer).
Upstairs is a good spot to hire if you've got a fair amount of people coming, with really comfy sofa's, a nice bar and lots of space with friendly staff.
Next time I'm in there I will try the food. Certainly a good place to add to the "places in the West End that are not rammed with people & you can just enjoy a quiet drink" list.
Trader Vic Restaurant - Mayfair
22 Park Lane, Mayfair, London W1K 1BE
01-07-2010
I first went to Trader Vic's many years ago with my ex husband's family. My ex-father in law was from Beverly Hills, so knew about the one out there and used to frequent this one a lot to remind him of home. It's a giant place with an almost museum like quality, dark lighting and with weird and wonderful artefacts dotted around the walls.
It was certainly novel to have cocktails served from a canoe.
We were served a tasty selection of hot Polynesian snacks. The ribs were some of the best I have eaten, non fatty (I like to imagine) or should I say non greasy, with nicely cooked smoky meat. They were popular with the Qype event crowd and certainly worth going back for.
The 'Avalon' Gastro Pub - Clapham
16 Balham Hill, London SW12 9EB
29-06-2010
I don't think that I've ever been in a London pub that has a beer garden as large and well "decked" out as the one at Avalon. The owners have made fantastic use of the outside space, with candles, sculptures, iron wall hangings, large umbrellas for shade and further down toward the back a beautiful fountain with armchair like seating. You really could be in a country pub, rather than a five minute walk from Clapham South Tube.
There's a large grill and BBQ area, which I was lucky enough to don my apron and turn some delicious burgers and fragrant, succulent peri peri chicken.
The burgers were enormous and it was a struggle to eat more afterwards (although I did), washed down with glasses of Pimms. It was the perfect way to while away a summer's evening.
The dessert menu looked super tempting too - Eton Mess is a favourite of mine which I'll be sampling when I definitely return!
