Rodizio Rico - Bayswater

111 Westbourne Grove, London W2 4UW

27-11-2008

The only advice: pace yourself! With meat skewers constantly being brought round and a salad bar and hot buffet, there is more than enough to eat, so take your time and dig in!

Various types and cuts of meat are brought around on skewers and sliced into your plate. There is everything from chicken hearts to chicken sausage (that was really good) to roast lamb to pork ribs to chicken wings to rump steak there will be lots to catch your fancy. Don’t be afraid of being fussy, although its all good and worth a try.

The restaurant itself is no frills but the staff are friendly and helpful

The hard thing is trying to find a gap to put some greenery on your plate – but it does defeat the object of eating copious amounts of meat a little! Definitely not for the faint-meat-hearted!

Fish Club - Clapham

57 57 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7TG

22-10-2008

Went for posh fish and chips at the Fish Club and it was pretty impressive. The calamari was exceptionally well-cooked, although a little on the saucy side. The good ol’ deep-fried hake was perfectly done with a brilliant batter.

They get their fish in fresh everyday and adjust the menu accordingly - so its always fresh and original.
Sides are ordered seperately, so it does tend to add up, but you can have anything from chips to salad to couscous and the choice makes it worthwhile!

The staff are friendly and laid back and not afraid to point you in the right direction - and helps make the atmosphere chilled.

Carluccio's - Covent Garden

Garrick Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9BJ

07-10-2008

Part of the chain of Italian restaurants that have popped over all over London now, the Covent Garden Carluccio’s was refitted about a year ago and is still a lovely place to grab a bite to eat.

Slightly on the pricey side, at least the menu is not off the shelf Italian and you can be assured of good quality food. The deserts and coffee especially are exceptional (but then, I have a sweet tooth!).

The crowd is funky and vibrant and not-too-touristy, whih makes a change for Covent Garden.

Definitely worth a visit if you want a quick meal - be sure to book during busy times as it gets full!

The Dogs - Edimburgo

110 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 1DR

07-10-2008

I found this restaurant on a random walk around New Town looking for a restaurant. I could not even get in for days - but it looked delightful so I booked then and there and went back for dinner two days later.

The menu is limited and updated regularly, focussing on local and seasonal food. It’s all eccentric twists on traditional Scottish dishes.

The interior is funky and minimalistic with whitewashed walls and photogrpahy. The tables and chairs are a collection of different styles and sizes.

The staff are super friendly and I definitely suggest you ask them for an opinion - they are well-informed and have a good feel for which wines suit the food too.

This was a little gem in Ediburgh and deinite must-so when you feel like spoiling yourself and want something different…

Belgo Centraal - Covent Garden

50 Earlham Street, London WC2H 9JL

16-01-2008 (atualizado em 02-10-2008)

I’ve walked past here loads of times and have never been able to figure out where you actually eat. Entering the restaurant you get sent downstairs into a cellar beer hall. Somehow they tread that fine line of making it feel traditional, with long beer hall tables and an open kitchen, and funky, using modern materials and designs. Which is the exact vibe I got when travelling in Belgium and I thought very well done! (total aside, but the bathrooms were very cool, with metal sheeting for doors and a unisex water fountain instead of basins…)

The beer menu is… BIG. I thought I like most beer but realised here that there are some beers I definitely like more than others! The beerologist also helped, giving guidance on what will be good to start the evening and expanding on why certain beers go well with certain foods, where they come from and the history and process behind making them. It was very interesting and gave me new insight into the world of beer!

The food was delicious. Not the cheapest menu I’ve seen, but not exorbitant. I had the pork belly and it was excellent – tasty and well prepared but not overly Germanic and heavy. The accompanying grand cru beer was an experience (that I would rather not repeat) but went perfectly with the food. The cheese croquettes to start sat well with the Oval trappist beer (these are made in working monasteries, although the monks are only allowed to sample the fruits of their labour once a week) and the strawberry blonde made my poached pear desert even sweeter (which I loved!).
I really thought the food was excellent and the environment made it a very jovial meal. Definitely worth a visit and even more so if you can get a few friends together.

Walkabout - Wimbledon

74-78 The Broadway, Wimbledon, London SW19 1RQ

29-09-2008

A drunk Aussie said to me ‘What do you expect mate, it’s the Walkabout’ and I suppose that sums it up. Cheap drinks, good popular music, strange smells and loads of ex-pats – the standard Walkabout recipe can be found here too.

One of the smallest Walkabouts, it only really picks up from 10pm on. Before that, its pleasant for a few drinks on your way after that, after that you should ensure you’ve had quite a bit to drink because everybody else would have!
Its still a nice venue to watch sport as it shows a wide variety of events and has loads of screens to watch it on.

Service is not the fastest, but the staff tend to get on with it. The crowd is always friendly and generally up for a good laugh.

arlene Wonder if the strange smells and the ex-pats were related;-)

andygee64 The walkabout in Glasgow is a carbon copy if it is any consolation so I suppose thats the way Aussie pubs are.

Terrace Bar - Wimbledon

601 Centre Court Shopping Centre, Wimbledon, London SW19 8YE

29-09-2008

This is one of the nicest restaurants with an outdoor section in Wimbledon high street. Sitting at the top of the Centrecourt Shopping Centre, with the entrance just outside Wimbledon station, its convenient yet takes you away from the maddening crowds.

Inside is airy and large with comfortable seating arrangements. Outside is more cramped, but has the advantage of getting lovely sunlight.
They make really good cocktails and are reasonably priced. The food is excellent, whether you are having salads or burgers or something more exotic. The service is fast, friendly and efficient.

I was really pleasantly surprised when I popped up to make the most of the last of the summer and will definitely be going back.

Odeon Cinemas - Leicester Square

24-26 Leicester Square, London WC2H 7JY

29-09-2008

Home to film premieres and celebrities, the Odeon in Leicester Square is a fair bit more pricey than all the other cinemas in London, but is worth a visit at least once.

The cines are huge and rightly makes you feel miniscule. The sound systems are excellent and you get truly drawn into the film. Its also very clean, which is something that not all Odeon’s seem to manage!

The prices are rather steep though and you have to be prepared to join the tourist throng…

Slug and Lettuce - Wimbledon

Hartfield Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 3TA

29-09-2008

I know its part of a chain and pretty formulaic, but this is one of the better Slug and Lettuce’s I have visited. Slightly off the main drag, it’s a little quieter and it is more reasonable than some of the more popular ones.

The setup is funky and comfortable with a choice of high tables, couches and tables to sit at. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Strangely enough, have sampled breakfast here and the food was very good and the coffee better. The weekday cocktail specials are also not to be sneezed at.
All in all, good for a safe evening out!

Angel & Crown - Covent Garden

58 St. Martin's Lane, Charing Cross, London WC2N 4EA

29-09-2008

A tiny pub on the same block as 5 others in busy Leicester Square, you would probably walk past the Angel and Crown.

The good things is it does interval drinks for Avenue Q (because the target audience are all of age, of course). The bad thing is I’ve never seen it take so long to pour a glass of wine. In all other ways it is average, with the normal variety of pub grub, the normal beers on tap and the normal cramped toilets.

Good for a quick stop before theatre but don’t hold your breath.
