Urquart Castle - Drumnadrochit

Inverness, Highlands and Islands IV63 6XJ

21-06-2008

set on the spooky Loch Ness, Urquart castle is a famous castle ruin. It has a brilliant visitors centre and souvenir shop with all the friendliness you would expect from the locals. The visit starts with a movie presentation which details the history of the castle. At the end of the movie the curtains are drawn automatically to reveal the beautiful setting of the castle and the Loch. Even in winter with the snow on the hills this is a truly magic place.
Get a Historic Scotland pass and you are away laughing. Also the castle can been seen from on a sightseeing boat on the Loch. Check out Jacobite cruises.

Edinburgh Castle - Edimburgo

Castle Hill, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2NG

21-06-2008

I spent a whole cold february day at the beautiful castle, it’s totally worth seeing and taking your time as well. Even if its just for the amazing veiws of Edinburgh.
Get a Historic Scotland pass, I got one for 3 days, which you can see how many of Historic Scotland places you can see in 3 days. at about £20 its well worth it, I got in Urqhart, Stirling and St Andrews Castles and Fort George.
The little chapel was lovely, the military museums (2nd Dragoons) were interesting, it really does take a whole day to get around and take in everything.
I got a audio thingy which enriched the experience with detail, but don’t get one for all the castles you visit as you will get sick of James I!
Wasn’t really that impressed with the cafe though or the lack of choice of food, but oh well!

The Anchor Bleu - Chichester

High St, Old Bosham, Chichester, West Sussex PO18 8LR

17-06-2008

This pub is great for a lovely summers evening, its has a nice patio out the front where the tide comes up to and out the back on the quaint high st a relaxing beer garden. Inside is a bit dark with low beamed ceilings but that just adds to it really. Its a bit of a locals pub, but being a popular area lots of visitors frequent it. The food is good as far as pub food goes and its lovely sitting out on the patio having a meal and drinks watching the tide come in (depends on the tides of course).

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - Portsmouth

Victory Gate, HM Naval Base, Portsmouth PO1 3LJ

13-06-2008

Very good way of spending an afternoon is down at the Historic Docklands in Portsmouth. We first went on the HMS Warrior, which is a massive ship - half steam, half sail, built in 1860, no wonder Britain ruled the world then.
Next up was the HMS Victory, not so big but more significant in history and Lord Nelson died on it.
The Mary Rose was one of Henry VIII boats and half of it is being preserved with waxy sloution. You can see this through big glass windows just near the HMS Victory.
The navy museum is small but worth a little look, and there are cafes and souvenir shops as well.
Warning - crawling around the boast is not so cool for those over 6 foot tall! The guy I was with banged his head a few times! First date too, no wonder it didn’t work out. lol

54 club - City of London

commecial street, London E1 6DE

20-01-2008

With a group of work mates, already a bit lagered up, we stumbled across this club and decided to give it a go. It was a £5 cover charge to get in, but most of us were busting to go to the toilet, so grungingly paid the fiver.
When we got in here its was pretty disappointing, small, smokey? with only a few guys in there, obviously waiting for some drunk birds to turn up. The drinks were extremely overpriced and I even had a "chat" to the bar tender about it. I brought a small bottle of Magners and it was £3.40 I think, thats how much a big bottle is everywhere else in England.
The only concession was is that the music was not bad.

The Liberty Bounds - City of London

15 Trinity Square, Tower Hill, London EC3N 4AA

20-01-2008

After a day of sightseeing the Liberty Bounds is a good place for some drink and food - it has an upstairs area especially for families. It is a Wetherspoons, so a cheap start to a night out.
Its comfortable, laid back and typical wetherspoons decor!
We had a a big group from work upstairs and they catered for us well.
Try the Westons perry - a pear cider - its different and at 7.4% it makes you happy quickly!
There is no outdoor area, but it has good views down to the Tower of London. Close to Tower Hill Tube Station.

Six Bells - Thame

44 High Street, Thame, Oxfordshire OX9 2AD

20-01-2008

Six Bells on the High street of Thame is a very old (1545) cosy laid back pub where you can spend the afternoon with nearly the whole pub to yourself chatting away over a cider. Its tudor style and has a big outdoor area out the back for those warm days.
Pop in if you are in Thame - they serve food from 12-9.
I was there all afternoon on one rainy day, loved every minute of it!

Prince of Wales - Clapham

38 Clapham Old Town, Clapham, London SW4 0LB

20-01-2008

The Prince of Wales in Clapham Old town is a cool little popular pub/drinking hole. It was so popular on Saturday night with so many people in it, it was like 100degrees in there and going to sit outside on the big tables out the front was a welcome relief!
Its decor is quaint and quirky, its looks like someone has liked car boot sales over the last 20 years and has hung everything they brought from the ceiling.
A good crowd in there, more your late 20's early 30's and staropramen on draught, it would have been a 5 star if it wasn't so hot!

Victoria and Albert Museum - South Kensington

Cromwell Road, South Kensington, London SW7 2RL

19-01-2008

I love this museum, I think its the best I have been too! I started with the scupltures (mostly British) from the 16th century to to present. They are spectacular and the epitomy of the rennaissance. The fashion exhibition is good if you can get passed the numerous budding fashion designers taking notes.
The middle Eastern part is awesome with the one of the largest and most detailed Islamic carpet as a centre piece. (you have to wait for the lights to turn on.)
I also enjoyed the exhibits from India, Britian again did very well out of colonialism there!
Definitely can't do it all in one day, OH I forgot the plaster casts are something else - spooky!

City Cruises - Tower Hill

Tower Pier, Westminster, London EC3N 4DT

18-01-2008

Another must do on the list of London, I have done it twice and had 2 very different experiences.
Both times I took the Docklands light railway out to Greenwich and set sail from there. The first part of the cruise is enjoyable, but a bit boring riverside as there are only big apartment blocks to look at, but on a nice summers day, its just good to be out on the river.
The boat docks at the tower pier, after going under the most beautiful bridge in the world - Tower bridge - really good way to see it!
Then the commentary starts and its good - done by the "Thames watermen" as they call themselves, these guys have proper geezer accents and tell you all about the buildings and sights from Tower to Westminister.
The "watermen" know how to play people out of some money at the end as they have people line up to tip the "Watermen" as they get off the boat! Well good on them, they do a good job of informing and entertaining.

In the summer its beautiful on the top deck, but of course u are sharing it with hundreds of tourists.
I went in the winter time and it was cold and drizzly but we got some beers from the bar and sat on topdeck anyway and it was still great - we weren't so cold because of the alcohol!
