The Lond Hall - Dublim

31 South Great George's Street, Dublin

05-01-2009

As other people have already posted, this place simply has simply not changed over the years unlike a lot of the traditional pubs in the area. The Guinness is excellent but what I love about the place is openness of the people who go there and also of the staff. It is quiet during the day - an ideal place to go to read the paper.

Zeit & Raum - Innenstadt

Wespennest 2, 90403 Nürnberg

05-01-2009

A well-known and popular location in the centre of Nuremberg that is famous, particularly for its Sunday Brunch. I went there for lunch this week and the quality of the food certainly left a lot to be desired. I ordered a Penne dish that was so obviously a mere warm-up (and not that warm either). It was also much too dry for my taste. This is not the first lukewarm experience I have had there either. Naja, it’s in a great position on the river, the service was fine but … as I said, the food was very disappointing.

Gasthaus Pegnitztal - Innenstadt Nord

Deutschherrnstraße 31, 90429 Nürnberg

05-01-2009

I have lived in the area for a while and never went to Pegnitztal - I have no idea in retrospect why not. Solid German kitchn - it has the interior feeling of a nicer restaurant and the food is fine but the prices are fair. They have three very good Franconian beers (Krug, Meister & Lindenbräu) available in bottles (the usual headache-inducing mass produced stuff on draught). The service was also very efficient and friendly and I will definitely return.

Palace Bar - Dublim

21 Fleet Street, Dublin

21-12-2008

This is just about my favourite pub in Dublin. The interior is as it was for many years and the portrait of Flann O’Brien watching over proceedings is a wonderful comfort. The staff are the old school style staff that Dublin was once famous for and I have had the experience of being told 'I haven’t seen you in here for a long time’ by a member of staff I was sure must have forgotten an old customer. It is right in the centre of town, easily accessible by public transport but the clientele are Dubliners as opposed to large groups passing through. There used to be a writer’s group meeting upstairs (I’m not sure if there still is something like that now) and the whole mood is one of discussion and warm familiarity. You can get in and out of conversations as you please - just a very nice experience. And, of course, the stout is wonderful.

I gave 5 stars but I am sure many people would have something to say about the toilets - if the interior has not been changed (and that’s positive), the toilets downstairs could certainly do with a lick of paint (and a scrub). Maybe this just makes the whole experience more authentic though!

Souptopia - Innenstadt

Lorenzer Straße 27, 90402 Nürnberg

21-12-2008

Nuremberg’s Soup-Bar. They have a very varied menu - daily regulars and one or two surprises. It’s a small relaxed place - relaxed in that you share your table with other hungry souls and sit on high stools. The service is super fast and a small portion of their soup is usually enough for me for lunch. You pay between €3-4 for a small portion and €5-6 for a large, you can eat as much bread as you like and although there is a range of drinks available, you are not 'expected’ to drink something. They do salads too. It gets very busy from 11.30 to 14.00 but you will (nearly) always find somewhere to sit. A good lunchtime option in Nuremberg’s centre, they also do takeaways.

Irish Folk Pub - Schwabing

Giselastr. 11, 80802 München

20-12-2008

As an Irish person, I have to say that this is probably the nicest Irish pub I have visited in Germany. It is a small place but it really has the feeling of a (good) pub back in Dublin. The beer is great (it’s the only Irish Pub I go to in which I drink Guinness!) and the staff are very friendly. The same couple has owned it for over 30 years now and it has a great atmosphere if you give it a chance. Live Irish music every Friday, I recommend this pub highly!

Shashamane Äthiopisches Restaurant & Reggaebar - Innenstadt

Willy-Brandt-Platz 4, 90402 Nürnberg

20-12-2008

This Ethiopian restaurant is not far from Nuremberg’s main station and is well worth a visit. The food is traditional Ethiopian fare and the mood is sooooooo relaxed! Eating with your fingers is a bit off-putting for some people but you get used to it very quickly. When I was there, they were projecting Ethiopian music videos on the wall and that was worth the going alone! Great for vegetarians too and not too expensive!

King's Arms - Innenstadt

Jakobsplatz 6, 90402 Nürnberg

20-12-2008

The King’s Arms is an English pub in the centre of Nürnberg. It is possible to smoke there and it can get kind of smoky but it’s a good pub to go to for TV, Beer (English, Irish, German), there’s a pool table and three dart boards. A lot of the regular customers during the week are English speakers living here so it’s a good place to get to know people. Simply sit at the bar and it won’t be long before you’re in conversation with someone!

Kofferfabrik - Fürth

Lange Straße 81, 90762 Fürth

20-12-2008

The Kofferfabrik has something for everyone. Music events practically every evening, theatre, a Quiz on the second Tuesday of every month, Open sessions, Sunday Brunch, good food - super Schnitzel!, great beer and friendly staff. Well worth a visit!

Das Mohr - Innenstadt

Färberstr. 3, 90402 Nürnberg

20-12-2008

Das Mohr is right in the middle of Nürnberg and is a nice place to sit and watch the world go by (if you get a place just outside in the summer!). The food is … hmm, however. The sweet things are not bad but the pasta dishes are far from fantastic. Still, there’s generally a nice atmosphere there and the service is friendly.
