So see food review below (it was fish at its very best!), though it was the ambiance that will guarantee the quality of this food as you know from all the photos on the wall who owns this restaurant and that they pride themselves on fish and wine (a combination that is unbeatable). And before you think just white wine with fish, think again! Paella with a tomatto base! The mind boggles, enjoy it, and enjoy every flavour!

A brilliant place for seafood tapas, and if you want a real treat sit down at the restaurant and order one of the seafood dishes, we had the lobster paella which was one of the best I have had in terms of flavour and fresh fish (comparing relative to similar fish stews and rice dishes in Portigual and the cost of Spain). A real treat, and I plan on going back at least a couple of more times while I am here in Madrid.

So (as of Summer 2010) this place has a Michelin star and is in the french tradition, so of course you are going to get a beautiful meal that is executed flawlessly with excellent french matierdee, somlier and waiter to boot. Value is fair enough given the star. But as far as 5 star exceptional, this french bistro in chiswick (a town full of bistros) is not distinguished by its experience, but only by its star.

So a star is of course enough to bring in clinetele: plenty of dates w men trying to impress expensive women. Yet, I would still like something that makes me think this place should deserve a second star, something more than a over stuffed wine menu, something that excites my senses as much as my pallete?

What a treat! A sensation adventure. The presentation was just brilliant, counted five different materials in the plates alone: glass, ceramic, wood, slate, marble (there was even an LED booklight attached on one of the dishes to give it light and shadow!).

Combinations of food were imaginative: tuna and flowers, pineapple and poprocks. Yet the classics were there, porkbelly spitroast pig with potato au gratin and smooth apple sauce. Sure little things could have made it perfect (crackling was too hard, chorizo slightly burnt, a bit nouve riche in places, and one too many interuptions from multiple staff throughout the night), but presentation, smiling staff and venue made it an entire theatrical performance, beyod mere dining!. One that - would gladly take friend back to just to watch their expressions throughout the night as the scene plays out before them.

Well done chef and staff: it was a pleasure indeed (and in a globo hotel branch none the less)!

Kettners - Soho

I'm always a little bit aprehensive about restaurants with a history (they sometimes care more about who has been there rather than what is eaten there), however Ketner's was both delicious and nostalgic. I'm actually surpised none of my foody friends have mentioned it before, given its origins in Napoleanic times and carrying through as an Oscar Wilde haunt.
The modern restoration has achieved both of these eras by keeping the decor simple but french, one can imagine Oscar Wilde sitting in the corner having a cigarette while jotting down some notes w an occasional glance accross the open space room to see what gossip was brewing.

As for the food, perhaps a bit too exensive on the normal menu, but was a bargain for us as we stopped by around 4.30pm for an earlier prixe fixe pre theatre dinner for 20 quid. I had a bowl of asparagus soup followed by a duck confeit, both of which were delicious. C had a delicate leek and cheese quiche (gruyere tart) to start with and hamburger to follow. I think the duck confeit won the day with the quiche a second place (the dressing on the side salad with the quiche was also nice).

We finished it off with dessert which was an extra fiver per person. Though given all the french bakeries and cafes in the area I would recommend moving on for dessert and coffee (though we both enjoyed our desserts of strawberry pavlova and creme brulle, though they no where not of the same quality as the starters and mains).

Sure little things could have been better but this meal was delicious and the french serving staff was friedly and very helpful so four and a half stars from me! Bon appetite.

Lovely little bright and clean cafe with comfortable seats. Had vegetarian breakfast which was made with fresh ingredients, including halumi cheese, yum. Also looked like nice omlettes and smoothies on offer.

A nice change to Indian Cuisine with similar spices but siginificantly different none the less. A bit milder w emphasis upon well stewed and spiced meat. Though vegetarian options (chick peas and lents) very nice as well. A very reasonable price for plenty of food and nice laid back venue with outddoor space despite being on the lower basement of the building: look out for red tipped fence when approaching.

A very reasonable lunch menu (6-10 pounds), and as I always follow the “give me your freshest plate of fish you have” rule, you really can’t go wrong.

Though I wouldn’t come here for dinner, the proper menu prices are not reasonable given the commonplace position of this restaurant, but I’m sure their is a rent to match given dockside location. Shame as the monkfish dish advertised is what originally enticed me but 18 pounds it is slightly too expensive.

They passed me grilled sardines in the end, which were indeed fresh and brought in from the sea that morning, served w bread and chips (w a nice homemade chunky tartare sauce which only went on the chips as sardines were lovely as is), topped off with glass of white wine I was plenty happy and the rest of the families around me seemed to also appreciate the reasonably priced lunch menu and enjoyable atmosphere. 3 and a half stars for lunch.

Solid chain mexican restaurant. Could be more authentic, but for mexican in this country it feeds the need for those who are “comida” addicts. Tortilla chips were home cooked and very good, guacamole was homemade but machine mixed. Fajitas solid, but little rustic touches missing like fresh sour cream or a solid fresh pico de gallo w fresh coriander. Ambiance was nice and with enough beer and margaritas it equals a solid eat for standard chain prices. Shame though as it could be five star with fresher ingredients, like Wahacas in London.
