Union Jack's - West End

1 St Giles High Street, London WC2H 8AG

17-11-2011

I really thought a Jamie Oliver place would be safe bet for a quick evening snack & drink with a friend after work, but I was really disappointed with everything from food to atmosphere.

Firstly, while I don’t expect all cafes & restaurants to be veggie friendly the menu options here were almost non-existent. One vegetarian starter/snack (garlic mushrooms) and only or two non-meaty flatbread things, even the salads were fleshed out with meat & fish. In the end I selected some cheese and crackers from the pudding menu to snack on.

The flatbread things aren’t “a concept” or particularly British, they are basically over-priced pizza breads.

While the interior is cute and quirky, I can’t imagine how local people will patronise a place like this. The food feels too fussy for lunch, it’s not right for a client lunch, and the ambience isn’t right for an evening venue.

Central St Giles is now a cluster of new restaurants and I think old favourites like Zizzi and new loved chains like Byron just a few steps from the front door will make it tough for Union Jacks.

And if that isn’t enough enough to tempt people away the annoyingly locked main glass doors (they want you to use another side door which is less obvious) frustrate 99% of people trying to get in, perhaps they’ll just go elsewhere. It was certainly distracting to be sat next to.

clashcityrockerkat I hardly think “go to a veggie restaurant” is the right retort, Dappaboutique — restaurants have to cater to everyone, even if it is with a few token dishes. Flatbreads sure don’t cut the mustard.

shannonboudjema Erm… Dappaboutique? Really? That’s your answer.

I appreciate the candid review. I would probably walk past, look in the window… review the menu … then recalling your review… head to Byron’s.

And… I think Jamie would take your comments graciously and perhaps even reconsider the veggie part of his menu. I don’t think he’d be chumpy and flippantly dismiss you to go find a veggie restaurant.

Bridges - London Bridge

21-27 St. Thomas Street, Southwark, London SE1 9RY

I haven't actually used Bridges but thought the fact they keep turning away business might warrant a review.

This salon is really conveniently situated near the station and my house, so I thought I could pop in once and see if they had space for a last minute haircut (it was something like a Thursday morning). I was told no and sent on my way, fair enough.

They also stock Dermalogica products of which I'm a massive fan and prefer to buy over the counter instead of online. Going in to ask for sunscreen resulted in a surprised "Eh? We don't stock summer products at this time of year, try somewhere else".

Finally I popped in recently to ask for a fringe trim. The place was completely dead - as it usually is - and I thought this could be a good way to check out if I wanted to come back and get my haircut. After the girl at the desk said yes, someone else barked back "we only do fringe trims for regular customers". Despite the fact I said that was fine, I was happy to pay (Toni & Guy do these free all over the country regardless of whether you're a customer) they sent me on my way again.

Good luck to them.

St. Germain - Farringdon

I haven’t eaten here yet but a friend took me here for late night cocktails. Propped up at at the bar, there was a great vibe and the drinks were out of this world. If a martini could change you life it would be the ones they make here.
Next time I go back I’ll be aiming for Sunday brunch as there is a distinct lack of great weekend brunch venues in central london and I reckon this is just the spot.

Update: I’ve now eaten here twice, including using it for a mini-family reunion, and can assure you the food is also incredible. The prix fixe menus are ridiculously good value.

Haven’t managed brunch yet but adding that I want to do one of their cocktail masterclasses now too. Looked like fun.

Peyton & Byrne - Bloomsbury

196 Tottenham Court Road, Bloomsbury, London W1T 7LQ

Yummy chain of bakeries specialising in teas, cakes and tantalising treats and packaging which lure you in as you walk past.

While the fairy cakes are be.a.utiful you may be a little bit over the cliché of buying a box of these. The home made loaves are equally delicious and come in a beautiful gift tin for an affordable, eatable, gift.

Village East - Londres

171 Bermondsey Street, London SE1 3UW

You’re in safe hands here with the both the bar, and their fantastic cocktail making skills, and the kitchen no matter what time of day you’re after something to eat (Sunday brunch is as good as Saturday dinner)

The Rake - Southwark

Undecided on this place. Good location, great choice of speciality beers but the night I went staff were grumpy, there was nowhere to sit in the patio area (even though I’d brought a group down by arrangement) and it was suggested we stand in the car park by the stinking bins.

This was worsened by the broken toilets and for some reason one of my party heading off to buy ice for the bar (I still don’t understand why).

Willing to try it again but wouldn’t recommend anyone head there with high expectations. There are other places in Borough…

johnsibly Good beers - although pretty expensive. I managed to order a £7 pint last time. Tasted great, but shame it was served in a plastic glass!

dmj1962 Spot on review - apart from the beer selection, the customer care leaves something to be desired.

Sitaaray - Covent Garden

167 Drury Lane, London WC2B 5PG

The thing I loved most about this place was just sitting down and having loads of delicious veggie food brought to me without having to make a single decision.

The food was fantastic and I loved the kooky decor. Not sure if there is a cheaper evening option though, I literally just sat down and they gave us the set menu.

The Mitre - Notting Hill

40 Holland Pk Avenue, London W11 3QY

This is somewhere that I really want to like but after two visits I’m convinced the service and food are just not worth a third attempt no matter how good the location.

Service is slow and unfriendly and, as a vegetarian, the menu is absent of anything tempting. An over-priced, over-dressed green salad just did not cut it. In fact the smell of chip grease which permeated my clothes from the open plan kitchen was more appetising.

222 Veggie Vegan Restaurant - West Kensington

222 North End Road, London W14 9NU

12-08-2008

People can get really down on vegan restaurants and although I’m a veggie I hardly ever eat at exclusively vegetarian restaurants because, you know, sometimes I don’t want soya dairy and meat substitute.

Despite the abundance of words like “seitan”, “tofu”, and “soya cottage cheese” on the menu this place is great. The flavours were amazing, an interesting blend of asian and afro-caribbean style food. I was with a carnivorous person who loved it too. We swapped dishes back and forth trying as much as possible but will definitely be back to sample other items on the menu.

The only thing holding me back from giving 5 stars was the cost and the hideous organic wine (which is standard with organic wines).

The Barrow Boy - Fulham

308-310 North End Road, Fulham, London SW6 1NQ

18-06-2008

Slightly hit and miss. After having to ask for champagne glasses to drink champagne from (as opposed to tumblers) and the rest of the food to be brought for my overpriced platter (they insisted it was just olives and hummus) they pulled it out the bag by spending the rest of the evening serving some of the best cocktails I’ve ever had.

Agreeing we’d got off to a bad start my friend returned a week later only to be served warm beer and a cold reception.

It’s tough when little gastro pubs like this get the basics wrong. With the Sunday cinema upstairs we were ready to get attached.
