Shaka Zulu - Camden

Stables Market, Camden, London NW1 8AB

07-12-2010

If you want to impress someone then Shaka Zulu will do just that. The decor is stunning and after a talk by the owner we found out the tiles were moulded from statues in the British museum and some from the Louvre in Paris too! Every detail has been considered, from the handmade fabric on the seating to the tied together straw that you so often see in Africa. They even have a wall made entirely of shells! Can you tell I've been to a lot of galleries and this was one that served food too, an added bonus all round!

The food left you wanting more and we were give quite a range. I'd recommend the salmon and biltong for starters and they even have an African version of our Shepherds pie and instead of potato there's a cream mixture, which they cover with mango chutney. Yum! If you're more of a meat lover then they have a really large selection of 'tropical' meats, Ostrich, Kudu and Springbok. I feel pretty bad having seen these animals for the first time on a plate rather than in the wild, but I hate to say it, they were very tasty.

The Shaka Zulu invents all it's own cocktails too and make sure you get them to bring you the flaming brandy with berries, it's delicious!

I felt the service was good, but on a quiet night they seem to just focus on certain tables, so be careful. There's a cloakroom there, which is useful and a party night on Saturdays. It's a mini Gilgamesh, but I loved it there and this was a great experience all round too.

Would definitely go again.

The Jack Horner - Bloomsbury

234 Tottenham Court Road, London W1T 7QJ

08-11-2010

I visited here on a chilled out Sunday with friends, who wanted something purely British and we had a lovely evening. Finding a table was stress free, it was clean and had a real cosy atmosphere.

We ordered and were served our food within 20mins trying out the pie selection platter, (£16 and enough for 2 people) which I highly recommend as it gives you a fantastic range of their pies, but mini-sized along with a small amount of mash, peas and gravy.

The only downfall I could find is the fact they don't do a sunday roast as I reckon it'd be a popular choice, but other than that I left feeling satisfied and completely content.

Echo Actually I'd like to add to my review as I found out they have a Christmas menu, so I took my work team there yesterday and now I understand why they DON'T do a Sunday roast. Possibly the most hilarious roast I have ever had and the biggest cheese board selection in the world and that's not a good thing.

They go for quantity over quality. We think the pudding was bought in and ended up being the best part of the meal (also because you knew no more food was coming), you can't go wrong with chocolate cheesecake really can you or can you at the Jack Horner.

Please just go for pies and booze.

Crocodile Cafe - Muswell Hill

120-122 Muswell Hill Broadway, Muswell Hill, London N10 3RU

06-11-2010

This little cafe tucked away from the main high street has the potential to be a fantastic place with fairy lights lining the path with which you enter it and a large covered outdoor area that looks beautiful. However my first visit here was quite disappointing and it wasn't even very busy for a Saturday.

The staff got my order wrong, adding beans when I didn't ask for them, but in their defense they were more than happy to refund the difference and bring out the correct meal. Where it falls down is the table service, delivering food before we've even had our drinks and once the drinks had arrived it was a matter of minutes before our 'hot' chocolates were cold. The hot chocolates were advertised on the menu as coming with marshmellows, so who could resist ordering one, only to receive it without them and no apology as to why they weren't there. False advertising I say.

The food filled a hole and we drank our luke warm chocolates quickly, then exited. It'll take a lot to go there again unfortunately. I wish you all the best of you try it out.

Lucky Voice - Brighton

8 Black Lion Street, Brighton BN1 1ND

02-07-2010

Do you feel lucky punk?

With a microphone in one hand, a glitter ball sparkling above your head and your song playing in your ears making your heart beat to the sound of the music... yes, I'd say I'm one lucky gal.

All I ask for in life is a decent selection of karaoke songs, enough space to fit all my mates into, our own space to belt out a few tunes and a little creativity with that one delight that is... the cocktail.

Share your songs over sherbet flavoured tastiness, popping candy tingling your taste buds and a shot glass filled with candy floss. Only in Brighton can they prepare you so well for that song you really shouldn't sing!

I'm feeling very lucky indeed.

karaoke box - Soho

18 Frith Street, Soho, London W1D 4RQ

21-06-2010

My favourite karaoke place in central London for price and entertainment. The staff are friendly and are great to have a laugh with. I got a curly white wig last time I went to get a drink to the shock of my friends, which was awesome! You can book by the half hour, so more people inevitably turn up because of this and I've never been and not extended my time there, which is so easy.

Book online and you'll always know what's available before you go.

A great impromptu night out!

I highly recommend it for those singers out there.

Charades Dancewear - Wolverhampton

191 Coalway Road, Wolverhampton, West Midlands WV3 7ND

10-08-2009

As a dancer at heart, who grew up in Wolverhampton I know this shop like the back of my hand. It’s split into 2, on the left you have the bridal shop and on the right the dancer’s heaven.

They have everything you could ever want to wear or show off in at a dance exam or for a show. They do a wide variety of ballet blocks, which have to be moulded to your exact foot size and the assistants in here are very attentive and know exactly what they’re doing.

You can get leotards, tights, sequins, extras for costumes, feather bowers and many more sparkly things. They have fitting rooms in the back and comfy pink cushioned stools to try shoes on from. The only thing I can say bad about this place is the price, but it is a source of professional and well-made dance wear.

As a young child you’ll enjoy your visit with all the bright colours surrounding you, but as a parent you’ll cring at the price.

Shunt Lounge - London Bridge

20 Joiner Street, London Bridge, London SE1 9SL

22-07-2009

This is an unusual, yet eye-opening place to go for a celebration. It’s like stepping back in time when London below was the place to go and being encircled by lights, music, bands, cool breezes and flamboyant performances. It is the alternative London that noone ever sees. I even saw a man dressed as a mermaid turn into a human and reveal all! They’ll be all the fun of the circus and much more.

The one thing to remember is to get there early as the queues are the biggest I’ve ever seen in my life and I’m not joking. It’s worth the wait though, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Baskin-Robbins - Hendon

98 Golders Gn Road, Finchley, London NW11 8HB

23-04-2008

This is part of the Baskin-Robbins chain and is a cute small store, 5 mins from Golders Green tube station. You can seem to get every flavour ice cream under the sun in here, from honey comb to coconut and cookie dough to raspberry swirl. Get a tub, cone or even mix it into a milkshake, it’s your choice.

They even put chairs outside, so on a sunny day it’s a warm person’s ice cream haven.

The Sun and 13 Cantons - Soho

21 Great Pulteney Street, Soho, London W1F 9NG

23-04-2008

A cross between a traditional english pub and a Thai restaurant, an odd combination you may think, but it seems to work. They have a variety of seating, dining tables to sofa’s and they do table service here like a restaurant.

The Thai restaurant has speedy service and friendly staff. I would warn against the 2 chilli’s red thai curry, because even though that states it’s mild, it’s extremely hot. Plus if you don’t like lemon grass, don’t try the soup, which is also extremely spicy. Once you find something your tastebuds can cope with, it’s a nice place to eat.

DPMHI Store - Soho

2-3 GPS, Great Pulteney Street,, London W1F 9NB

23-04-2008

This is a great place for exclusive and limited edition vinyl characters, a place to view street art with works like Futura and Mode2, plus a great clothing store. The clothing range includes a lot of items designed by artists. The shop is on a number of different levels and it is often more like a gallery than a shop.

It’s a great place to go if you want to see new, innovative things, but most things included here are quite pricey, but it’s definitely worth having a browse every now and again.
