Espressobar La Tazza D'Oro - Friedrichshain
Grünberger Str. 40, 10245 Berlin

This cafe intends to present the atmosphere of a typical Italian espresso bar, quite successfuly integrating also the Berlin culture. Daniel, the owner is very friendly and open to your cafe wishes, without falling into the “decaf-soy-half-fat-machiato” frenzy of the modern day coffee places.
They have a 5EUR breakfast offer: coffee of your choice, fresh pressed orange juice, and your choice of sandwich. My favourite: toast bread with pesto, muzzarella, ruccula and tomato.
Another feature is the interesting music. Most of the time it is Italian pop music of the 60s “tu vuo fa´l´america…” reminding you of those Sofia Loren movies.
The shop has chairs, tables and a comfortable set of sofas -and a small patio at the back.
Great to read your newspaper…nobody will rush you!
PS: They have not adhered to the non-smoking ban, and the perfect atmosphere is ruined by smokers. A pity, really! I would otherwise go more often. One of the 4 stars I had originally given has to dissapear in the smoke. sorry!
Bäckerei Strassmanstrasse - Friedrichshain
Strassmanstrasse 5, 10249 Berlin
18-10-2008
This bakery breaks the mold: the owners are friendly ALL THE TIME! although they offer mostly industrial bakery products, on mondays, wednesdays and Fridays they offer BIO products, including bread, muffins and cakes.
There are always customers in this bakery. It is small, but always smells of freshly baked bread and the owners are always smiling.
The owners are vietnamese, or otherwise Asians, and this makes a big difference to the sometimes moody local bakers. They are eager to please the customers, preparing your own personal variation of sandwich if what you are looking for is not on offer.
They also offer fresh salads to take away, with dressings.
Too bad they only have Steh-tables and only a couple of places outside, if they had more room, they would have a very loyal customer base to enjoy their breakfasts.
Mimo - Friedrichshain
Petersburger Platz 1, 10249 Berlin
03-10-2008
Mimo is the heart of this place -its moroccan owner is always greeting his guests with a smile. The kitchen has a new cook, and the meals cover the basic staples of italian food. Good for breakfasts in the sun too -only the service could be quicker.
Ludwig Löwe Höfe - Moabit
Wiebestraße 46, 10553 Berlin
03-10-2008
The Ludwig Löwe Höfe are one of those Berlin originals: a typical industrial building. It hosts several companies, and it also has a de luxe party room.
On October 11 and 12 it will be the host to the 2008 Fotomarathon Berlin www.fotomarathon.de
Kaffeehaus KuchenRausch - Friedrichshain
Simon-Dach-Strasse 1, Kaffeehaus, 10245 Berlin

I have been here 3 times, always for coffee and cake and during weekends. The place has a classic flair: dark wood chairs and tables, crystal chandelliers, an old “ofen” in one corner -curious to see if they turn it on in cold days- and tromp l’oei in the walls. It reminds me of a viennese coffee house, with lots of really big newspapers nailed to these long wooden holders to read at your table. So much for atmosphere…people really come here for…CAKE!!!
A rare ocurrence in Berlin, where industrial bakeries have taken over, leading home made cakes and bakery products almost to the brink of extinction.
KUCHENRAUSCH means something like “addicted to cake” in German, and you could become addicted really. When I went there my friends and I tried cakes such as “choco-choco”, cheese raspberry cake and a fabulous missisippi mud pie with three types of chocolate. Everything was delicious!
Other types include> cheese pistaccio, cheese caramel, white chocolate, apple cake, cheese meringue, carrot cake. They don’t have a menu for cakes, you have to go and have a look and face the torture of having to choose. They cost betwene 2.40 and 2.80 a piece if you eat it there.
The waiters were attentive -one of them introduced himself with his name, and offered water to our dog. He explained how the cakes were prepared and what kind of ingredients they contained. I almost fainted -unaccustomed to this kind of attentive service in “service desert” Berlin.
One waiter brought the coffe, another brought the cakes. The whole thing took 15 /20 minutes, and I am still wondering why it takes so long to bring two pieces of cake to a table…but maybe they wanted to bring the coffe together with it…and all the tables were full.
The coffee is also tasty, it doesn’t taste bitter or too roasted, or too strong. I always take it without sugar, and there you can really perceive the difference. Our milchkaffee was also great. Not too much milk foam, and the right balance with coffee.
I like the fact that all cups and plates are different, they hand made and painted ceramic cups. It has a certain feeling of having coffee in your own home.
The place also has Wi-Fi, which I didn’t use but it’s always nice to know.
Kuchenrausch is a place you can definitely become addicted to, and a great addition to the otherwise unspectacular offers for cake and coffe in Friedrichshain.
Goodies - Friedrichshain
Warschauer Straße 69, ehemals Aromabar, 10243 Berlin

(atualizado em 28-07-2008)
all “all organic” event in Friedrichshain, at reasonable prizes and with free W-Lan!
there are tables outside, but I prefer the inner lounge area at the back. There is even a child friendly corner, and dogs are also allowed.
A wide selection of bagels with delightful fillings (curry chicken, dried tomatoes, turkey with lettuce), sandwiches and müsli and JOghurt. They also make delicious smoothies and prepare good cofee -their chai is prepared out of powedered mixes, though!
AROMA also gives you a “mileage” card, after 10 coffees the 11th is free. Not that one would go there solely for the card, but if you are going to have coffee anyway, why not?
Definitely worth a visit -newspapers and magazines are also available for Cafe visitors.
