Chandlers - Rothesay

Ascog, Rothesay, Highlands and Islands PA20 9ET

18-09-2007

A comfortable hotel, situated in Ascog Bay, approx 5 minutes drive from Rothesay. The hotel has a lovely setting, looking over the bay. There are infact only 8 rooms and the owners have tried very hard to make sure your stay is comfortable. Our room was very nice, although a little smaller than imagined, but had a nice view over to the bay.

The winning medal for the hotel goes to the restaurant however. The restaurant itself is traditional in decor, but very 'plush' and tidy. The food was beautiful - reasonable portions and very fresh. Between us, we had mushroom strogonoff, pate, fish chowder, sticky toffee pudding and creme brulee! A nice bottle of geverztraminer from the extensive wine list also. Breakfast was also supurb, with an extensive 'tradional' Scottish menu, of good quality.

We paid £79pp DBB.

KirstenPoll This review in retrospect, since our holiday is over, is rather misleading regarding the quality of the food for the price. The restaurant was all linen and cutlery, and not professionally cooked, in fact relying on readymade portions complete with flavor-enhancer. Serving school meals in a fine room does not deserve a restaurant price. Of course some will pay for the linen and not notice the food.

Rothley Fisheries - Loughborough

19 Cross Green, Rothley, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE7 7PF

18-09-2007

This is THE BEST chippy in Leicestershire, with a great reputation. In a nutshell, it consists of a take away chippy and a 'restaurant', which serves....you guessed it....fish and chips! They may do you apukka pie or battered sausage if you ask kindly too! The staff are very friendly and definately 'on the ball'. The fish is fresh, the chips are supurb and you even get extra chips if you manage to finish your plate! The portions are quite large and cost approx £7 I think. They also do kid size portions and are a licensed restaurant.

Not the best choice for those on a diet!

Balmer Lawn Hotel - Brockenhurst

Lyndhurst Road, New Forest, Brockenhurst, Hampshire SO42 7ZB

18-09-2007

We got an excellent deal here on line - £60 B&B per room. The hotel is quite large and 'olde English' style, with a pleasant terrace and bar area. Our room was basic but very comfortable and had everything we needed. We ate lunch and breakfast there. Lunch consisted of ciabattas and sandwhiches, which were nothing spectacular, but nice enough. Breakfast was good, served what seemed to be a refurbished dining room.

The staff at the hotel were friendly and gave us a lift down the road to a wedding reception.

We didn't have a good look around the grounds of the hotel, but there is certainly ample parking, a terrace (with a Sunday jazz brunch!) and even an outdoor pool I believe!

New Park Manor Hotel - Brockenhurst

Lyndhurst Road, Brockenhurst, Hampshire SO42 7QH

18-09-2007

In 1666, King Charles II made New Park Manor, in the heart of the New Forest and was his favourite hunting lodge on his return from exilein France apparantly!

We attended a wedding reception here and it was a really lovely venue. The grounds are probably most impressive, with a huge terrace and even a swimming pool. The reception room was rather standard in comparison to the beautiful old style rooms and ceremony room. We found the staff to be very friendly and they even gave us a lift back in the early hours as all the taxi companies had closed (it was a Sunday!).

Not the cheapest of places - x5 drinks cost £25 a round…OUCH, but a very nice venue and a lovely setting for a wedding.

Costa Coffee - Perth

4 Scott Street, Perth, Scotland PH1 5EJ

06-09-2007

Great location, right on the corner of High Street. If you like to people watch, here is the place to be!

Have been a few times and it is always reliable, though I have found that the tables are often not cleared very promptly.

Last time, I had a lovely hot chocolate and a banana muffin, which was very delicious! The pan au chocolat are also very nice!

The North Inch Park - Perth

Perth, Scotland PH1 5DN

WHAT A FANTASTIC PLACE!!

The North Inch, or park, is a wonderful, free space for anybody to use...we go there all the time.

There is a a HUGE grass area, with footie and rugby posts (Perthshire Rugby Club), a golf course, play area, pentanque, bowls, monuments (a must) and loads of amazing daffodils in Spring!

The walk can be a loop of approx 1 mile by the river - completely flat, so good for cyclists, runners, buggies or just lazy people like me!!!

TIP - go Sunday mornings when the boys are out playing rugga and footie!

The Weem Hotel - Perth

Perth, Scotland PH1 5EJ

02-09-2007

Located in Weem, near Aberfeldy (25 miles from Perth), this is a lovely hotel to stop at for a drink or lunch. The bar/restaurant itself could do with redecorating, but is still very comfortable and does really good, homecooked, reasonably priced food.

The really nice areas of this hotel are the 'lounges' - very traditional with leather sofas and open fires for a max of 8 people.

Obviously a hotel too, though have not stayed here myself - I just go for the food!!!! P.S They sell Nobby's nuts - beat KP!

lokalreporter perth is in australia, isn't it?

Fern Cottage Restaurant - Pitlochry

Fern Cottage Ferry Road, Pitlochry, Scotland PH16 5DD

02-09-2007

We had a pleasant evening meal here a few months ago. Inside, the restaurant is a little '80s', being predominantly red/black but it actually worked very well. The food was pretty good and we paid approx £60 for 3 courses and wine.
Good location in town, but tucked away down a little side street. Also does lunches, though have not been personally. Beautiful flower hanging baskets in the summer. Flower Power!

Cafe Canto - Perth

62 George Street, Perth, Scotland PH1 5JL

02-09-2007

A cafe by day and a licensed bistro by night. Located in a nice area of Perth, by the Concert Hall, Cafe Canto is a reliable cafe. I have only had lunch here, but found the food good and reasonably priced and the service good. I had a hot choccie and a scone.

The cafe lacks 'cosiness' and unsure what it would be like for an evening meal, but will certainly try it out and let you know!

Provender Brown - Perth

23 George Street, Perth, Scotland PH1 5JY

02-09-2007

Provender Brown is a great deli, selling an array of produce, many of which are local; last week I bought some strawberries grown in Errol.

There is a huge selection of cheeses, cold meats and pate - try the duck and quantro pate.

You name it, they have it here and it is all such good quality........fresh bread, meats, cheese, wine, beer, cakes etc etc. Also try Dr. Kargs crackers....yum yum!
