Virgin Active - Wandsworth
Southside Shopping Centre, Wandsworth High Street, London SW18 4TQ
23-03-2011
With my newfound love for baking and there being no let-up in my perma-love for boozing, I decided that I would HAVE to find a new gym. My previous gym had been in my work building and was VERY cheap. Virgin Active in comparison is pretty expensive in comparison (about £65 a month) but I am not sure that this is especially a rip-off. Gyms, it would seem cost alot.
You do get quite a bit for your money. The service is efficient and helpful without being over-the-top (I hate over-friendly personal trainers!) and the joining process took about half an hour in total.
The gym itself is HUGE - there are lots of weights, machines for cardio workouts, space for classes and spinning. There is a modest pool, sauna and jacuzzi.
The changing rooms are huge and there are always lockers. In the month I have been going so far I have only once had to wait more than a few minutes for a machine I want to use to become free.
I would without question recommend this gym to a friend - it's clean, upbeat and professional.
Joy - Clapham
The Junction Shopping Centre St. John's Hill, London SW11 1SA

There are lots of Joys dotted around London but is still a joy (boom boom!) to stumble across one... This is my local branch and is ace. Tucked away in clapham junction station, it's small but packed with books, homewares, clothes, gorgeous handbags and cool jewellery and the chaps and ladies who work there are friendly and cool.
Last weekend I bought a fabby looking cushion shaped like an owl but I tried on a flouncy flowery miniskirt which I haven't stopped thinking about at the same time so may have to return this weekend to "invest".
It's always worth a peek and despite some of the prices making you gasp you can still find a bargain.
Shakespeare's Globe - Southwark
21 New Globe Walk, Southwark, London SE1 9DT
27-04-2010
As everyone else has said before me eloquently, the Globe is a super and special place.
I went last Friday to see Macbeth and was stunned by the production, the acting and the atmosphere. Thrilling.
All I will say is if you can go: do. If you can afford to grab a seat then invest in a cushion. And whatever you do, unless it's a barmy midsummer's night, bring a big jumper or a coat. I was f-f-f-freezing. It was so worth it though.
De Hems Dutch Bar - Soho
11 Macclesfield Street, Soho, London W1D 5BW
18-04-2010
A marvellous and welcoming Dutch pub with China Town - and all it's myriad of amazing places to eat - on the door step. They serve fruity beers, including Fruli which is always a bonus, the barstaff are lovely (some very pretty ladies work here chaps!) and the music's actually not half-bad.
During the day it can be really chilled and there's a nice area upstairs with lazy sofas. Evenings can be busy but during summer you can spill onto the street in true continental style.
The only detractor are the truly horrendous-smelling (gents) toilets but really if you have to drink in Central London, this is a pretty safe bet.
Needoo - Whitechapel
87 New Road, London E1 1HH
18-04-2010
Needoos looks like nothing special from the outside, but as soon as you get inside the smells confirm that you’re in for a treat. I went with a bunch of boys and they ordered enough to feed half of Whitechapel: peshwari and garlic naans, seek kebabs, lamb chops, tandoori chicken, Daighi slow cooked meat, Daal baingun and Punjab Tinda.
And wow! The food was out of this world. Everything was hot and fresh off the grill, perfectly spiced, succulent and juicy. The daal was the best I’ve ever had and the naan breads fluffy and fragrant. We barely spoke as we scoffed mountains of meat. The staff were super friendly and gave old-school proper service. There was the obligatory and oh-so-welcome hot-towels and choccy-mints and amazingly the whole meal came to less than £15 each. This was the best Indian meal I’ve ever had, bar none.
Imli Restaurant - Soho
167-169 Wardour Street, Soho, London W1F 8WR
18-04-2010
A world away from the Brummy Indian Curry Houses of my childhood, Imli is thoroughly modern, sleek and actually suprisingly lacking in atmosphere.
However, the service is some of the best I've ever experienced. Friendly and attentive but so relaxed and unfussy - very impressive.
I went for one of the 2-4-1 tasting menus that other (lucky) people have had the pleasure of scoffing and wow! For less than £15 a head we had plate after plate of amazing curries, fine Indian starters and topped it all off with delicious fig and ginger ice cream. It was all very tasty and goodness me, filling!!
I would certainly recommend you try a table at imli for a spicy night in SoHo!
Reichstag und Umgebung - Tiergarten
Platz der Republik 1, 11011 Berlin
05-04-2010
Stunning building in one of the world's hippest cities. Parliament buildings can be grand, they can be sleek. They can be important and this is all of that and more.
I waited in line for a looooong time to get out of the snow but it was worth it - the glass and steel curves inside were gobsmacking. Nice but pricey cafe at the top and views that - like the cold - take your breath away. No visit to Berlin would be complete without a trip to the Bundestag!
Arctic Icebar - Helsinque
Yliopistonkatu 5, 00100 Helsinki
05-04-2010
OK, confession. I LOVED this place (despite the 1 star rating...). It was tiny, there was an extra charge for the cloak-room (surely you'd want to hold onto your coat in an ice-bar) and the inside of the "arctic" bar was as ugly as any bar I've ever been. But, but, it was hilarious.
Utterly naff, totally over-priced; don't go expecting any glamour. If you want to feel like a bozo in a quilt-like coat and drink expensive vodka though, this is your best bet!

Leave all pretentions at the door and accept that you are entering a bizarre Finnish kind-of Planet Hollywood style diner. But with tractors. Lots and lots of tractors.
There are stacks of old adverts on the walls, and we were seated in a chicken-coop with low lights and a menu that's mocked up to look like a newspaper.
The food was stodgy but actually very tasty. Reindeer and chicken, lots of potatoes and BIG portions and the apple-pie we shared for puds was amazing. Not cheap, but this IS helsinki. Fun and dorky.
garywilliams This is a great place from what I remember....but that was back in 1995!!!! I remenber climbing on to the tractors and then not being able to get of because I was drunk.....stupid man.....good night, though!!!!!!!

Dim t - Fitzrovia
32 Charlotte Street, West End, London W1T 2NQ
05-04-2010
Popped into Dim t for the first ever time for lunch today. Like lots others here I am an avid fan of ping pong and was initially concerned that the menu seemed a little brief. However, every single mouthful was a delight and the noodle and curry dishes were utterly amazing.
We ordered grilled chicken gyoza, chicken satay, baskets of chicken and cashew nut and beef and chive dumplings and a big pot of jasmine tea. My boyfriend had classic guilty pleasure – Katsu curry- and I opted for a big bowl of chicken and udon noodles with a spicy, fragrant red curry sauce.
Really, everything was incredible. Fresh and hot, spicy and delicate. The dumplings were soft, steamed parcels of joy. The curry silky, creamy and full of crisp beansprouts, sweet carrot and tender chicken. We wolfed it down before reclining on the comfy sofas - dotted with silk cushions - and got to mopping our brows.
Meal was £40 for 2 (without booze) which isn't cheap but the service was really charming and fast. Will go back.
