Thai Terrace - Guildford
7th Floor, Castle Car Park Sydenham Road, Guildford, Surrey GU1 3RT
12-04-2011
Hi Mum,
Your grandson took me out last Friday to Thai Terrace. It's on top of a multi-storey car park in Guildford town centre, which sounds odd, but it makes it very easy to reach in the lift from the car park! Finding the car at the end of the evening was another matter ... but that wasn't the restaurant's fault ... see end of my review for that farce!
He booked for 6:30, but I was running late getting home (from visiting you actually!) so he had to change it to 7:30, & the staff warned him that they would be turfing us out at 9pm for the second sitting of the evening. My son was concerned about this, but I thought 1.5 hrs was long enough to eat our meal.
We were greeted by a delightful Thai girl, bowing to us with her hands in the traditional Buddhist prayer position. Having attended Buddhist retreats, this made it a very special welcome. I love Thai people! the restaurant was lit with bue fairy lights and it looked pretty packed out! We were shown to our table, a small table for 2 with other couples on small tables either side. It seemed crowded, but we were so ensconced in our world that it really didn't matter. and the food, well... it was just out of this world.
We'd last been here on Christmas Eve 2009 when your grand-daughter flew in from Oz for Christmas. Straight from the airport to Thai Terrace - well, ok she showered first - and it cost me £75 for the 3 of us that night. This time it was £80 for two - but I think I went to town with a 3 course meal and shampoo, as I was being treated! ;-)
I had Yum Thai Apple to start which was delicious tofu with sauce.. mmmm. Then a no 59 (I couldn't possibly remember it's name and didn't attempt to say it on the night.) Even when I ordered the Yum Thai Apple, the Thai waitress didn't understand me and I had to say, "a no 16 please"! That was served with sticky rice and it was just so yummy - it was tiger prawns with Thai gravy - a traditional Thai recipe. For dessert I also had a traditional Thai coconut dessert with coconut icecream .... mmmm, it's making me hungry thinking about it!
My son didn't want much of his champagne so I had a second glass! (He was driving.)
We went out onto the Terrace to look at the lights of sunny Guildford, with the cathedral in the distance - lovely. The terrace has those heaters so it would be possible to sit out there, although they're terribly unenvironmental.
So, apart from my son saying "Omg, I didn't know it would be that much!" when he was presented with the bill.. he paid up happily and the farce of finding the car began....
.... in the lift down to Level 1. No, that wasn't right, but the ticket machines were there so we paid the £1 car park ticket (£1 for all Guildford's carparks at night now), back in the lift to Level 2..... No that wasn't right either! "Where IS the car? What level IS the car on?!" Back in the lift .... up to Level 3. out of the lift. Nope! "Well, it must be Level 4, but we came in at ground level?!" Weird! And yes, there it was... Level 4, which was on the ground level! ha ha
A wonderful meal in a lovely restaurant. Memorable.
Lots of love to you Mum,
