The Cricketers - Dorking

A very friendly couple run this pub, having recently moved to Dorking from north London. They serve good beer, and the atmosphere is always calm and laid back. There is a beer garden, which is meant to be good, but it was too cold to try this out when I visited.

The food is excellent, especially for a Sunday lunch, and there are great walks to and from the pub. The King William serve a good range of beers which are regularly updated. The pub does get very busy (particularly during winter when everyone wants to eat inside) so it’s worth booking. Outside seating in summer with views towards Ranmore. Parking can be a bit problematic, with the road right next to the pub at such a steep angle and another road nearby marked for residents only. Again, try to arrive early to avoid any problems.

RIP The Malthouse. Always seemed to be popular with the under-18s and a place many people seemed to be offered fights in. Perhaps it’s a good thing that the pub was closed. The site is, apparently, soon to be a block of flats. This assumes the economic slowdown doesn’t scupper the developer’s plans.

This is a decent, friendly place. It looked better before they decided to varnish everything with a gloss finish during a phase of redecoration. However, before refurbishment it was a real smokers pub with a non-smoking section perilously close to the dart board, so in that sense a big improvement. They serve food, which is ok, and comes in big portions (fish and chips are particularly good) There’s a pub quiz mid-week which I never won but always enjoyed.

A great place to shop! They are always happy to give advice and everything I’ve bought from them has been top quality. They’ve won awards, will order in an organic Christmas turkey for you, and are deservedly popular. This is the sort of local business that is well worth supporting.

The food is good and the atmosphere is relaxed. I used to live in Streatham Hill and would come here from time to time. It was also the place to bring people who felt wary of visiting the areas cos you could take them for a walk in the nearby Rookery afterwards. Great pizzas and they had jazz every so often (might still). It’s an easy place to kill time in, unlike some other Streatham pubs which feel edgy.

Da Pietro’s is run by a very friendly guy, this place serves excellent pizzas and pastas. I was a regular visitor when I lived in the area, and miss it now I’ve moved away. Everyone would benefit from a relaxed, friendly neighbourhood restaurant like this one. Their lunchtime specials are worth checking out and they do a good range of beers and wines.

Great shop for getting cards and little bits and pieces as gifts. Very popular (and busy) around Christmas time as everyone nips in to find the secret Santa gifts they need for under a fiver. Space change their range on a regular basis and the staff (owners?) are friendly. They stock a selection of decent looking jewellery and photo frames for those wanting to spend a bit more money.

Two stars was very generous from the previous reviewer. There’s nothing positive to say about the food here, unfortunately, and it’s astonishing that the restaurant has lasted as long as this given the choice in the area. I don’t normally like to do a hatchet job on someone’s place of business, but there’s a terrible sense that this restaurant isn’t even trying and is hoping that enough of its customers will be too drunk to care. Avoid.
The Witchery - Edimburgo

The Witchery is a fantastic place to stay, with a small range of suites, each different to the others, but all beautifully designed (I don’t think I’ve ever seen anywhere else do rooms quite like the Witchery). It’s a wonderful retreat for a very romantic weekend. As other reviewers have said, the restaurant looks excellent but the food isn’t fantastic - but is popular so perhaps there are plenty of people who disagree. Despite average food, the rooms alone deserve more than five stars.
