Holiday Inn Hotel - Philadelphia
9th Avenue 109, Runnemede, 08078 Philadelphia
13-02-2009
Probably the worst Holiday Inn I have ever stayed in, and certainly the worst in America. It’s pretty run down. I don’t know when it was built, but everything in it looks original, from the carpets, cutlery, china, plates and so on. The whole place just looks “sorry for itself”. The staff are ok, no problem there, but at USD 125 per night, there may be better alternatives nearby.
Land's End - Penzance
Cornwall, Penzance, Cornwall
29-01-2009
If you do not live locally, this is a must stop for holidaymakers. However, although spectacular in scenary, the rather touristy attractions side of the place is not brilliant. The firework displays during summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays (about 10pm) are pretty good, but expect big delays in trying to get home as everyone heads for the exit at the same time.
Tesco Stores - Penzance
Branwell Lane, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 3DU
21-01-2009
Got to say that although this store is not the largest Tesco store in the world, it stocks most things, but not in quite so much variety as others. Whereas the larger stores will have 4 flavours of a particular product, this store will only have two. The check-outs are brilliant, never have to wait. Lottery (with Fast pay) is available at the special counter OR the normal tills. Very useful. Does get busy in summer, but open 24 hours, just pick a quiet time to go. Easy!
Sennen Beach & Leisure - Sennen Cove
Penzance, Cornwall TR19 7BT

This place is excellent to visit, probably best before the height of the summer season, around Easter or something. Otherwise it’ll be busy. The food is very good, but pricey! The staff are good, and if possible, will attempt to get you a table if they possibly can. Its location, right above the beach, is great. Arrive early if visiting in summer if only to get a car parking space!
Sir Humphry Davy - Penzance
32 Alverton Street, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 2QN

If you have ever heard of Desperado Beer (lager with a dash of Tequila) then this is the only place in Penzance that you can get it. I highly recommend it, so go try some! The pub occasionally has live music, and Karaoke, screens that show football, and a beer garden out the back – which in summer can be quite a sun trap (before the shadows rob you of it).
The Swordfish - Penzance
Newlyn, Cornwall, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 5BD

If you want to go to a true Fishermans pub, make your way to the Swordfish. Long gone are the days when the bar would open spot on 12 noon on a Sunday and when you entered, people were on their second pint (how did that happen then…..!) Ha Ha. A separate bar and lounge area almost feels like 2 different pubs, but both ends are great. Usually a great jukebox, with punk and rock n roll to blast out and enjoy!
Dock Inn - Penzance
17 Quay Street, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 4BD

You have got to visit this brilliant little pub down near the harbour. Spingo on draught, outside toilet, and owned by Jethro’s brother! They quite often have “jam sessions”, it’s a sort of pub where laid back people can suddenly break into song (old Cornish ones normally) and someone has a banjo to accompany them. A must in summer on Mazey Day!
Admiral Benbow - Penzance

I would not recommend this place to eat and be totally blown away by the experience. I think that the place is good for visitors in the summer mainly for it’s unique history. However, I do not think locals spend an awful lot of time in the restaurant. The upstairs pub is a different place, not bad for a quiet pint during the week, and if you are young, a lively place to go on a weekend!
Long Rock Post Office - Long Rock
Godolphin Road, Penzance, Cornwall TR20 8JL
20-01-2009
We use this little post office in Long Rock for posting our work letters and so on. It is a fairly small, the gut that runs it is very good. The parking is very bad. You can sometimes park right outside, but most of the time, it’s up around the corner on the estate close by. One other problem is the fact that as this post office is located close to an Industrial Estate, it appears to be well used by several companies, and one lady appears to be a fairly frequent visitor in the 4.30 to 5pm time slot with sometimes a huge amount of overseas mail! If you time it so that you get stuck behind her, be prepared for a little wait.
Wharfside Shopping Centre - Penzance
Market Jew Street, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 2GB
20-01-2009
This small shopping area was a welcome addition to a run down main street about 8 to 10 years ago. Shops include The Body Shop, Thorntons, Costa Coffee (the most recent addition), Argos, Warrens Bakery, Iceland, and more! It is not really under cover, but there is a little shelter near the entrance. However, this is usually where some “nick-nack” stalls are positioned, and the man who sells jacket potatoes! There is a restaurant that overlooks the Penzance Harbour, and the whole thing is located right across the road from the towns main car-park. Also close by is the railway station, bus stop and taxi rank. A fresh fish shop and South Shore, another eating place are all on the lower (street) level. All in all, a nicely laid out shopping area with good shops.
