Wolfe's Bar & Grill - Covent Garden

30 Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5BB

15-03-2008

There is a certain charm and intimacy to Wolfe’s Bar and Grill, which has been tempting tourists and diners alike to its location just off Drury Lane for over 30 years. The wood-panelled dining room is the setting for a menu of burgers and steaks, including tender Kobe burgers and rib eyes. Chic without being intimidating or snooty, this popular restaurant also offers lighter snacks throughout the day and a la carte and set menus popular with pre-theatre diners. The well-appointed bar has a comprehensive drinks list.

Fixed Lunch
£13.50 (2 courses)
Fixed Dinner

Tuttons Brasserie - Covent Garden

11 Russell Street, London WC2B 5HZ

12-03-2008

Tuttons is a longstanding bar brasserie situated in a really nice part of Covent Garden Piazza. I wanted to mention this particular venue today, because as the weather starts to warm up is- the much coveted seated area on the piazza;the Terrace will be very popular with all. It has an area that holds 52 diners and is the ultimate place to grab a bite to eat while enjoying the sunshine and watching London go by.

They have an excellent range of main courses, costing around £13 on average. There is something for everyone be their preference vegetarian, fish or meat. The choice which is my most favourite includes Pumpkin and Sage Risotto cakes served with baby Spinach and Caramelised Red Onion; Honey glazed Salmon fillet with warm Potato and baby Leek salad; chargrilled Lamb steak with roasted Mediterranean vegetables and a firm favourite, warm Goat’s cheese salad served with Bruschetta and Apple chutney.

Daily specials are announced on the blackboard and are very reflective of the season and weather, or as much as they can be in the British summertime. Look out for the Asparagus and Hollandaise sauce which never fails to impress.

Tuttons is a happy place and thoughts of restraint should be left outside. This leads to the wine list which complements the menu well and offers a sound choice with the emphasis on New World wines. House wines are £13.95 per bottle.

It has its own separate in-house bar offering a variety of drinks and lighter bites. Whether you stop by for a coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening the bar is always lively and the staffs are a pleasure to chat with.

Tuttons is also an ideal place to meet friends and business associates and that what I like about it the most.. It is close to all the pleasures of Covent Garden and the West End and is an ideal port of call to rest from over vigorous sightseeing or shopping.

Finally, if you want to ask up to fifty friends out for a party you can hire the twin private dining rooms, beautifully decorated and very intimate under the main restaurant and have a wonderful time. There is no venue hire charge and the set menus feature some of the highlights from the a la carte menu of the Brasserie.

Just one more thing, all diners at Tuttons get free and priority entry to the seductively stylish new cocktail bar Dirty Martini, located next to the restaurant so you can extend your evening into the small hours.

Strada - Chiswick

156 Chiswick High Road, Chiswick, London W4 1PR

12-03-2008

Strada’s menu describes itself as ‘a group of stylish, contemporary Italian restaurants, serving good quality, simple and freshly prepared dishes’. Within their group statement there are sixty restaurants offering people good quality Italian food. Their first outlet opened in Battersea in 1999 and their clientele has been increasing steadily ever since, because they seem to expanding all the time with more out-lets planned.

Though Strada has grown into a fair sized chain - it retains the feel of being a local neighbourhood Italian restaurant. The menu includes pastas, risottos, grilled meat, and fish dishes, but in my opinion they are best known for their pizzas.

The restaurants present authentic Italian dishes in contemporary surroundings and aim to use only the freshest and finest ingredients, such as single vineyard extra virgin olive oil, Parma ham and buffalo mozzarella, imported from Italy to provide exactly the kind of rustic, traditional dishes one would expect to find travelling around its regions.

On this evening when I ate in Chiswick I began with Insalata Toscania, melted Buffalo Mozzarella wrapped in speck on a Tuscan salad of vine Cherry Tomatoes, Cucumber, roasted Red Peppers, Onion, Ciabatta Croutons and Olives. The Gamberoni has roasted butterflied king prawns with Garlic, White wine, Chilli, Lemon, Parsley and extra virgin Olive oil to start.

I then decided to try the very creamy Risotto di Verdure, freshly grilled Asparagus, Broad Beans, Peas, Spring Onions, Zucchini, Green Beans and Mint, finished with baby Spinach leaves and shaved Parmesan. You could also opt for the healthier, Spigola al Forno, whole Sea Bass stuffed with Thyme and Fennel, served with grilled Lemon and roasted potatoes and my escort for evening had the Costata di Manzo, fourteen ounce chargrilled, twenty one day aged rib-eye steak, served on the bone with roasted cubetti potatoes, green beans and a garlic and herb butter.

Strada’s wine list mainly had regional Italian wines, beers and liqueurs, all carefully chosen to complement the menu, and in addition, every table receives a complimentary bottle of purified water- which I think is a really nice thought.

A range of traditional pizzas, each one spun by hand, is also an integral feature of Strada’s menu. Options include the Rossa, with spicy Southern Italian Salami, roasted Red Peppers, Chilli, Caramelised Onion, Garlic, fresh Oregano, Tomato and Mozzarella. Vegetarians are not neglected either, as they have Florentina, made of Spinach cooked with Garlic, Nutmeg and Black Pepper with Mozzarella, Parmesan, Tomato and a free-range egg, on the menu.

For those wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth, there is Tiramisu, authentic Italian dessert with light sponge soaked in Espresso and Rum, layered with Mascarpone cheese, eggs and dusted with Cocoa powder, along with a range of Italian coffees.

Chowki - Soho

2 Denman Street, London W1D 7HA

10-03-2008

Chowki just by Piccadilly Circus-an easy to get to place serves some really fantastic food based on all the different regions of India. The prices are very reasonable despite being in Central London. The reason why I like this place is because the menu changes regularly and if you go there be prepared for surprises e.g. in one visit you may get to eat Hyderbadi dishes, the next time you may get to eat Mangalor dishes. It is advisable to call ask what regional cuisine they are serving-and pop in if it is something you are partial to.

Elephant Walk - Hampstead

98 West End Lane, West Hampstead, London NW6 2LY

10-03-2008

This is a small but friendly restaurant that serves authentic Sri Lankan dishes. The devilled lamb and Gothamba rotis are really the best. Also if you like your food to be authentically hot then please mention it to your waiter as a lot of the heat has been moderated for London palates

Cafe Spice Namaste - City of London

16 Prescot Road, Aldgate, London E1 8AZ

10-03-2008

I know the owner of this little cafe Cyrus Todiwala and I am not praising the cafe for this reason but because I think the food served there is sophisticated and elegantly spiced to cater for the British palate. There are many dishes on the menu but my most favourite is the starters from the tandoori section -murgh tikkay marinated in a blend of yoghurt, ginger, cumin and chillies. You can have good meal for around 25.00 excluding drinks.

cafespice Hi, Thank you for the good words about cafe spice namste, however the pictures you uploaded is not the one we serve, they are not anywhere nearer to what we serve. would appreciate if you remove the picture.

Wright Brothers - Southwark

11b Stoney Street, Southwark, London SE1 9AD

10-03-2008

I ate there a few days ago and found it to be a really charming establishment. They offer not only oysters but also many other kinds of fish for some-one who may not be partial to oysters.
I consider this to be one of the best oyster restaurants- at least in London. Did you know that oysters can be boiled, fried sauteed and even turned into a mean fritter. Not only may they good for your sex drive, but they are considered to very nutritious containing a high level of protein.

The Treatment Rooms - Clapham

Orlando Court Orlando Road, London SW4 0LD

08-03-2008

A friend of my mine is getting married next weekend and I treated her to this Wedding Package which has really worked. I have never seen her look so toned and slim, she actually was on for 3 and half weeks and actually swears by it. Its a powerful body contouring system providing slimming, lifting, toning and cellulite programmes for the body. Results are progressive and can be intensified depending on the level of the individual worksout just like conventional exercise.Beauty therapists in the salon advised her to target those areas of your body that exercise alone can not reach.

Each session - 30 mins. Total 3 ½ wks – 10 treatments £383

Market - Camden

43 43 Parkway, Camden, London NW1 7AH

07-03-2008

Working in an open kitchen at the back of a small dining room with bare brick walls and zinc-topped tables Dan Spencer and his business partner Denise Tang The Market Restaurant with great charm and efficiency.
The menu - it changes daily - was a long read coming out of so tight a kitchen.
From the nine first courses on the printed menu plus one on the blackboard my friends and I chose home-smoked Mackerel Paté with pickled cucumber, fried Cornish sprats with Tartare sauce and Red Mullet and Squid served on Bruschetta spread with a Broad Bean and Walnut purée.
This last dish was fabulous, a really excellent idea and a superb combination. The amiable willingness of the British to find culinary inspiration all over the place was exemplified in Coconut and Lemongrass soup, Beef short ribs with Soy and Ginger and Pig’s cheeks with Morcilla (Spanish black pudding) and Peas.
In the main course, English Pork the new-friend of British restaurants, Gloucester Old Spot pig, was tastefully served as a chop with Lentils and Apple sauce and was much appreciated. Chicken and Ham pie with greens was also exclaimed over.
I tasted the filling and the balance of Douce and the salt was just perfect. Salting mutton seems like a really cool idea. The mutton was rendered bacon-y but its accompanying bubble and squeak and caper sauce still suited.
The men with me could have indulged me and had the jam sponge pudding with custard or fig, Amaretti and grape must ice-cream but they both wanted meringue with pale pink rhubarb and pomegranate seeds-I still don’t know why. The wine at Market is priced around £35 (house wines are £13) and £25 for Founders Block Cabernet Sauvignon, Katnook, Coonawarra 2004 was money well spent and I will be back with some other friends for a special meal on some other celebratory whim.

The Warrington Hotel - Maida Vale

93 Warrington Crescent, Maida Vale, London W9 1EH

07-03-2008

The Warrington, Gordon Ramsay’s latest investment of £6million opened earlier this month, without publicity, but rumour has it that it is already fully booked for several weeks due to word-of-mouth recommendations.
Kate Moss is among those who have been seen eating at the pub in Warrington Crescent, Maida Vale.
The Warrington features an art nouveau bar and dining room and has been renovated extensively by the celebrity chef who bought it more than a year ago.
The TV chef seems to be sticking to a very down to earth menu and doing his best to keep the locals happy by considerately restoring the pub’s listed Victorian interior.
The menu features classics such as steak and kidney pie (£11.50) plus more adventurous dishes like braised Gloucester pig cheeks with Swede (£11.00) and roast Guinea Fowl with Puy lentils and bacon (£13.25). Bar snacks include pork pies (£6) and pickled cockles (£1.50).
The pub’s archaic stained-glass windows, mosaic-tiled porch, stone fireplace and frescoes featuring semi-naked women attests to its origin as a brothel, later became known as Warrington Hotel- have all been retained.
The Warrington is run by Mark Sargeant, the former head chef at Ramsay’s Claridge’s restaurant, who is responsible developing the Ramsay group’s expansion into pubs.
It was bought by Gordon Ramsay Holdings as part of a strategy to conquer London’s gastropub market.
Last week, Ramsay purchased his fourth venture - the York And Albany in Camden, which is set to reopen in May.
His two other pubs are The Narrow in Limehouse and The Devonshire in Chiswick, are being received positively in their respective localities. At best I think you could end up paying around 30.00 for lunch and 45.00 for dinner ot just go in for a drink and eat for under tenner.
