Sennen Beach & Leisure - Sennen Cove
Penzance, Cornwall TR19 7BT
17-02-2009
The location is certainly good - right over the beach and next to a car park. The terrace is great for a sunny day - sit out with a coffee or drink and soak up the sunshine. The restaurant itself is very nicely presented - great vaulted wood-panel and glass roof - but very noisy when busy. The dinner menu looks interesting (if, as others have said, pricy). I’m not sure that they have the lunch-time menu pitched right yet. The range of main courses is fair; our party of four registered 75% satisfaction - the mezze was a big disappointment. Desserts very limited - 2 types of cake or ice cream served in its cardboard tub - not really good enough for this price level. The Beach will do well in the tourist season, but a bit more work is needed if they are aiming for repeat business from the locals out of season - there is simply too much competition from other good restaurants prepared to “go the extra mile”.
Bath House Hotel - Chard
Holyrood Street, Chard, Somerset TA20 2AH
01-01-2009
Excellent small hotel and Oriental restaurant!
Chard is not necessarily the most attractive of small towns, but very conveniently set as a stopping off point between London/Midlands and the West Country. The Bath House has most elegantly furnished rooms, very reasonably priced. If you dine in the restaurant below, you will be delighted with the quality of the food. (Breakfasts are also a treat). Best of all, the service is friendly: the hosts go to great lengths to ensure their guests are comfortable, well-fed and happy.
Highly recommended - you will not be disappointed.
Tate Gallery St Ives - St. Ives
Porthmeor Beach, St. Ives, Cornwall TR26 1TG
28-12-2008
The Tate, St. Ives, is a great space in which to exhibit art. The setting, the views and the gallery spaces themselves are all excellent. There are great views of the coast and over the town from the huge picture windows and from the cafe on the top floor.
Your reaction to the contents will obviously depend on the current exhibition, although there is a small number of works which remain permamently on display. The exhibition I saw in early December 2008 was hugely disappointing - but this will change in the new year, so my opinion may too.
Morrab Library - Penzance
Morrab Gardens, Morrab House, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 4DA
28-12-2008
This private library is an absolute gem! Housed inside the delightful Morrab Gardens, the library is staffed by volunteers and contains a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction books in floor to ceiling shelves in the rambling rooms of a delightful Georgian building. Included in the stock are many fascinating collections, including many of specific local interest, and a photographic archive (open to the public on Thursday mornings). The library also hosts a number of free lectures on topics of cultural interest. There is a small membership fee, but the experience of browsing the card index or dipping into such an extensive and eclectic stock is worth every penny of the modest charge.
Penlee House Gallery & Museum - Penzance
Morrab Road, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 4HE

We are extremely lucky to have such a great gallery and museum in Penzance. As well as a changing calendar of special exhibitions throughout the year, there is a permanent exhibition of the Newlyn School artists which contains a number of works by artists such as Stanhope Forbes, Walter Langley and Henry Scott Tuke. The museum contains many fascinating items from the distant and more recent history of West Penwith, and there is computer access to a large number of photographs of local interest. There is also an excellent cafe and a well-stocked museum shop selling books, postcards and greetings cards.
The Green Bean - Penzance
Market Jew Street, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 2LG
27-12-2008
Small, very friendly coffee shop near the bottom end of Market Jew Street. Serves great coffee, high quality teas and a good selection of snacks and stickies. There’s a mixture of tables and comfy chairs, with a selection of newspapers for customers to browse. You can also use the (free) wi-fi access for your laptop if you must work or can’t tear yourself away from emails! The Green Bean has a loyalty card, so every now and then, there’s a free coffee in it for regular customers. Great place!
The Bay Restaurant - Penzance
Britons Hill, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 3AE

A fantastic restaurant, with excellent food, good wine and efficient service. This kind of quality and style obviously doesn’t come cheaply, but the ambience is perfect for a special dinner or a luch you want to savour rather than hurry.
Blue Snappa - Penzance
35 Market Place, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 2JF

Friendly cafe/bar in a convenient location for a lunch- or coffe-time break in the shopping. Good service, and a small but interesting menu, but a little pricey. The almond tart is irresistible! Only drawback …. what IS that weird smell? Slightly off-putting until you get used to it.
