Copenhagen Marriott Hotel - Copenhagen

Kalvebod Brygge 5 5, 1560 København

15-02-2010

Copenhagen Marriott Hotel - Copenhagen

06-04-2008

A great pizza restaurant in the lovely environs of Puerto Portals in Mallorca. Fantastic pizzas, tasty nachos and great beer. This was the original Diablito, which has spawned other outlets across Mallorca and now on mainland Spain, including Madrid.

The views from the deck out on the marina and port are amazing - dozens of very impressive yachts. It’s best to get a seat outside - the weather from March to September allows for this - as the inside can be a little bit pokey.

The only reason I haven’t given this 5 stars is that the staff can be a bit distant… more interested in talking to each other than serving customers.

They can also be dismissive to foreigners (ironic, considering most of the yachts in the marina are foreign-owned and crewed) so it can be to your advantage to speak as much Spanish as possible when dealing with them. It can make things go a lot smoother.

Squat and Gobble - Fitzrovia

69 Charlotte Street, Marylebone, London W1T 4PJ

06-04-2008

A colleague brought me here for lunch just the other day. He had previously raved about S+G the last time we were in the area, so when we found ourselves with a decent amount of time between client meetings, we made a beeline for their door - just before the lunchtime rush.

S+G offers a great selection of sandwiches and baked potatoes. They also have a large selection of fresh juices. It was one of those occasions then you really find it difficult to chose something from the menu - because so many things sound tempting.

We both chose the same thing - a club sandwich, which was literally over-flowing with fillings. It really put the competition (Pret, Eat etc) in the shade. The sandwiches came with a delicious side salad and a handful of baked potato wedges. I had a hard time finishing it all - very generous helpings.

Services was extremely friendly and professional. Had it been just a tad warmer, we could have eaten al fresco as they have a small number of tables outside on the street.

One word of warning - it gets extremely busy at lunchtime. We got there just before midday, shortly after which it filled up.

In contrast to the usual grab’n’run sandwich lunch, I really felt I’d eaten after visiting S+G, and would recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in the neighbourhood. I’ll definitely be heading back, if only to sample their Fish Finger Sandwich!

Prohibition Bar & Grill - Tower Hill

Unit 1 Tower Bridge House, St Katharine Docks, East Smithfield, London E1W 1AA

31-03-2008

I visited this restaurant for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It’s part of a strip of new restaurants looking out onto the water at St Katherine Docks - a great location, just 5mins walk from Tower Hill tube station.

It’s deceptively large, occupying the corner site of this block. Nicely finished, with comfortable seats and sensible table arrangements (i.e. not on top of each other) and welcoming staff.

They have a decent wine list and nice selection of beers on tap and bottled. The cheeseburger I ordered was impressively large and perfectly cooked, the chips were just the right side of crispy. The dinner menu seemed to be based on the burgers, steaks and sandwiches recipe for success - lots of comfort food here.

Service was attentive but not in-your-face. It did get quite noisy by about 9pm, but we were moving on at that point anyway.

It would make a nice alternative for a drink after work if you find yourself in the area. The view onto the dock is lovely at night.

Heartland Brewery, Union Square - Nova Iorque

Union Square West at 17th Street 35, NY 10003 New York

31-03-2008

The Heartland Brewery at Union Square is an excellent micro-brewery and restaurant. I’ve been there twice on visits to NYC and enjoyed each. The service is friendly, but not over-bearing.

They have an excellent selection of ales, stouts and lagers - I didn’t have time to sample all of them, but really enjoyed the Oatmeal Stout (nice and heavy) and the Corhusker lager (incredibly light, refreshing).

From a food perspective, I had a burger the first time and beer-battered fish & chips the second. Both were cooked to perfection.

My only gripe about the whole place is that it’s incredibly dark inside. Like a lot of bars in NYC, they seem to prefer to keep daylight outside wherever possible. This makes a return to the sunshine all the more painful…especially after you’ve been sampling their beers all afternoon!

I’ll definitely make a return visit next time I’m in New York.

Apple Store - Mayfair

235 Regent Street, Soho, London W1B 2EN

31-03-2008

The Apple store on Regent Street is perfect… if you’re a freeloading tourist or backpacker with the brass neck to use the computers on displays for an hour at a time.

As an Apple customer, I’m frequently frustrated by the large crowds of people simply popping in to check their email, sometimes writing verbose replies while they’re at it.

This is the only reason I don’t give the store 5 stars. I’ve always found the staff to be friendly and helpful, the store itself to be well-stocked and organised. I’ve been an Apple user for years now… laptops and iPods… and find buying my equipment from the Apple store almost makes up for the damage done to my bank balance.

It also goes without saying that it’s beautifully designed and laid out. Well done Apple - but let’s have some more stores in Central London.

Febo - De Weteringschans

Leidsestraat 121, Amsterdam

31-03-2008

God, how I love Febo! My other half is Dutch and so on our regular trips to Amsterdam, I always partake of a little Febo goodness.

Be warned, there’s little in the way of healthy food here. It’s all fried, fried, fried. Think Homer Simpson. But my God, it’s beautiful. Forget about your cholesterol count and dig in.

The novelty factor is also part of Febo’s attraction. Self-service via little plastic windows - you pick exactly what you want, drop in the coins and pick up your food.

My favourites are the krokets (there are several different kinds) and the kaasouffle (deep-fried cheese). The frites are great too, served of course with mayonnaise.

Although the previous reviewer pointed out the labels are in Dutch, in my experience locals are only too happy to translate for you if you ask nicely.

And now I’m drooling…

Febo - De Weteringschans

Leidsestraat 121, Amsterdam

31-03-2008

London City airport - Londres

Royal Docks, London E16 2PB

31-03-2008

I’ve surprised myself by awarding City Airport five starts, but really, compared to London’s other airports, it’s a dream.

As a Wapping local, this airport is only about 15 minutes from my front door and eminently reachable by either cab or the DLR.

For a small airport, the facilities are great. I’ve never experienced a delay of any kind getting through security… the security staff at Heathrow could learn a thing or two from their colleagues at City re. politeness and efficiency.

However, City’s growing popularity could be its undoing. The departures area is really too small and crowded at peak times. There are some extensions being put in place and the new bar/restaurant area is a great improvement.

21st century travel is far from pleasurable…but if you have to fly in/out of London, choose London City Airport.
