Sedan - Werther

Alte Bielefelder Str. 24, 33824 Werther

03-12-2011

Avenida Diagonal 1, 08019 Barcelona

03-12-2011

This hotel is in a newly developed area of Barcelona with many new hotels, a museum and large shopping center. You can reach the downtown via the streetcar or nearby subway station.
The large windows provide a great view of the city or ocean, depending on which side. The window shades can provide privacy, but still let enough light in give an open feeling. The rooms have free Internet (Ethernet cable), and there’s free WiFi in the public areas of the building (look for or ask for the access code).
The breakfast buffet has a large Spanish influence, so a lot of sweet pastries and fruits. The scrambled eggs were from a ready-mix :-( Coffee/espresso from a self-service machine, as was the hot water for tea. In the evening you can get snacks in the lobby Corner Bar, but only until 11pm (then they refer you to room service, which only delivers to the room).
A good location to see a different side of Barcelona, and the beach is only about 500 m away. Barcelona’s excellent public transit can get you to the center in a short time.

FMO Flughafen Münster-Osnabrück GmbH - Greven

Hüttruper Heide 71, 48268 Greven

02-12-2011

Nice, small terminal at FMO. Halfway between Münster and Osnabrück, directly on the A1 autobahn (and the newly-opened autobahn exit). Parking is available in two parking structures directly across from the terminal, or ground parking in the more-distant long-term lots. The walk can be a bit long if the weather does not cooperate.
Check-in is fast, but limited shopping/eating before security. There are 2 cafés (lower level at Arrivals, or upper level before security), as well as an overpriced restaurant overlooking the runway. There is a free outside observation deck adjacent to the restaurant.
The gates have sufficient seating, but hardly any refreshments available. But in general, the waiting time will be short anyway.
LH offers flights to FRA and MUC, other airlines often change/adapt their schedules and destinations. Air Berlin has a good presence as well. Many charter flights in the vacation season.

Kreissparkasse Halle (Westfalen) - Geldautomat - Werther

Eine Sparkasse, zwei Geldautomaten. Was will man mehr?

Flughafen Düsseldorf International - Lohausen

Flughafenstraße 120, 40474 Düsseldorf

02-12-2011

The terminal at DUS is a very nice and open architecture, not so constrained as Terminal 1 at FRA. There are many shops, restaurants and cafés before security, so you can spend your time here before heading to the gate. Available gate seating can be a bit weak in Terminal A, slightly better in Terminal B. There is a Starbucks in the central area overlooking the checkin area, a nice observation deck, and for a quick bite before leaving (or after arriving) there’s a McD in the lower level at Arrivals (Terminal C area).
You can easily reach the airport via train (to the Fernbahnhof, then take the Skytrain to the terminal), via S-Bahn (Fernbahnhof or underground Airport station depending on the line), or by car (expensive parking, but best to take P7 if leaving from Terminal A, or P8 if Terminal B or C).
Lufthansa has a large check-in area, which keeps the lines short. The other airlines have fewer counters, so their lines can be considerably longer.
There are 2 hotels on site, Sheraton and Maritim. Both offer standard airport rates, but cheaper deals can be available if you book enough in advance. A good option if you have an early morning flight, or return late at night after the last train. Other hotels are available in the vicinity.
Overall the best airport option for me, hardly any delays, and never crowded (except on the first day of NRW school holidays).

Barcelona (El Prat) Airport - Barcelona

Prat de Llobregat, 08820 Barcelona

02-12-2011

The new Terminal 1 at BCN is a modern, well-designed building. There is ample room in the check-in area, and there are many scanners at the security checkpoint (but still occasionally long lines since you have to place all your items in various plastic tubs yourself, and there is no staff to assist or ask questions on exactly which items need to be removed).
Once you are past security, you immediately have the various shops and some duty free. To the left and right are various restaurants and cafés (including McD). Most gates are in the central wing, with sufficient waiting areas, restrooms and interspersed cafés/bistros to grab a bite or drink while waiting. Gate assignments are often set only an hour before flight time, so you have time to sit and relax elsewhere before finally heading towards the gate.
When flying into BCN, the baggage claim is clearly marked, but the screens indicating the baggage belt are a bit small. When you leave the secure area, head toward the right side to go down 1 level to the taxis (25-35 EUR to downtown). There is also a bus to Placa Catalunya (5+ EUR), as well as to Terminal 2 (free) for the train to the center.

Hammer Mühle - Bielefeld

Mühlenstr. 54, Bielefeld

19-06-2011

Moevenpick Hotel Hamburg - Sternschanze

Sternschanze 6, 20357 Hamburg

19-06-2011

This impressive hotel is in a converted 100-year-old water tower (once the biggest in Europe at 58 m and in use until 1961). Located on a small hill across from the Sternschanze S-Bahn station and Hamburg Messe fairgrounds, and adjacent to the Sternschanzenpark, a large 12 ha (30 acres) grassy park, the hotel is in a quiet and idyllic surrounding.

The entrance at ground level brings you to the underground escalator that glides up to the lobby and the ground floor of the former water tower. Exposed brickwork provides a link to the previous building use. A lot of effort was put in to preserve the original architecture.

The staff is very friendly and greet you nicely upon arrival. The rooms are arranged in a circle around the center of the building, with the elevators at the center. On the top floors are suites with a great view of the surroundings. The bar, restaurant and conference rooms are located on various levels with access to the central elevator and staircase (public areas). The guest room elevators require your room keycard to activate.

The breakfast buffet has a wide selection of breads, pastries, cheese, meat, as well as warm dishes (eggs, sausage, pancakes, etc.). Fruit juices are freshly squeezed, and there is a good selection of tea.

The conference room level has its own kitchen and staffed coffee bar area for all your needs.

The hotel provides a very comfortable atmosphere, without the hustle and bustle of other hotels. The location on the park does a great deal to enforce this feeling.

Free wi-fi is available in the public areas (voucher from the reception), paid Internet available in the rooms. A fitness room and spa is also in place.

An excellent choice for a trip to Hamburg. Easy access via the adjacent rail-line (plus onsite underground parking). The Hamburg Messe is within easy walking distance, the downtown a bit longer walk (or 6 minutes by public transport). And if you want to skip the hotel restaurant for an evening, there are numerous restaurants surrounding the park (try Cafe Sternchance).

Dataran Pahlawan Mega Mall Melaka - Kuala Lumpur

Melaka, Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur

24-04-2011

Large mall with two personalities. The one half (towards the city center) is large and spacious with well-known stores and food (McD, Starbucks). The other half (towards Carrefour and the cinema) is narrow and cramped with small stores selling mainly phones & accessories, knick-knacks and clothing. The Mahkota Mall across the street is nicer.

Dubai Fountain - Dubai

Downtown Burj Dubai, Dubai

24-04-2011

Great fountain spectacle set to music every 30 minutes in the evening. It lasts only the length of the song, so 2-3 minutes. Good view from the bridge (often crowded), or from the upper restaurants at the Dubai Mall. Can of course been seen from the top of Burj Khalifa. If you videotape, make sure to have a good microphone to reduce any wind noise.
