The Gurkha - Edimburgo
128 Morningside Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH10 4BX
09-05-2008
The Gurkha is situate along the main Morningside Street so is well located for those that wish to enjoy all aspects of Morningside (e.g.-pubs and cinema). The restaurant is easy to see with the blue writing across the front of the shop. The restaurant is very small in terms of numbers (max 30 at a push) but is almost always full for evening meals and is usually busy at lunch times. The layout is well done to maximize numbers of potential customers without making any paying client feel squashed.
The décor inside is very traditional of Nepal and there is a lot of historical information about British colonial rule over Nepal. The owners are very proud of their heritage! The interior has a constant stream on dulcet Nepalese tones, very different to Indian music, which is always a treat.
Good menu, helpful staff! good value, happy days!!

Stereo Nightclub

Edinburgh
Star Rating
3 out of 5
Intro Sentence
The place for a good time in the week!
The Venue
Stereo is located on Kings Road and is really easy to get to from most parts of the city. There is several clubs and food outlets around the nearby area so it is not hard to quell the late night munchies.
Stereo is a large club and is spread over 3 floors and has 2 bars. The inside is slick and is one of the more unusual Edinburgh clubs in that it has a pool tables and a Foosball table on the ground floor! Always guaranteed a good game with a few drinks in you!
There are two levels with bars and dancefloors. Each of the two upper floors has a different DJ so it is easy enough to find your type of music on one of the levels. There are places to drink on each of the levels (standing and sitting) and the two dancefloors are all of a good enough size for a good dance! The bar service is quite good although be prepared to wait a while for drinks. It is best buy a few at a time to avoid the queues and relax and drink at the side of the dancefloor for while.
It should be noted that Stereo is only on four nights a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday).
The Atmosphere
The club is usually very busy, and there is friendly atmosphere and there is rarely any trouble. However, as with any club this cannot be guaranteed! Stereo is very popular with the students in the week and the 25 – 30 year olds on Saturday night where the tunes take a more retro flavour! Therefore, it is always a good idea to try and get there before hand otherwise you could find yourself outside for quite sometime. One of the best aspects to Stereo is that everybody is up for a great time and as such people (both staff and fellows clubbers) are very friendly. Be prepared for a good chat with some strangers !
There is usually a good gender balance at Stereo although it can be a bit swayed towards men on some nights more than other clubs. Stereo is one of the rare clubs to host an organized dating night ‘Shagtag’ on Tuesday nights that has been running for 6 years. Even if you don’t usually like that kind of thing, it can be really fun!
The Music
The music at Stereo changes throughout the week. As each of the two dancefloor levels play different music it is certain that your genre of music will make an appearance at some point in the week. Usually the club is host to indie music and chart tunes. However, Friday nights bring in the old skool tunes with the best of the 1980’s and 1990’s being played inter-mixed with some major chart stormers. Saturday nights are perfect for the clubber keen for the dance music with house and disco featuring on the dancefloor all night!
The DJ’s at Stereo are very open to requests and some even download songs off I Tunes that you suggest if they don’t have!
The Drink
Stereo is probably the best for the balance between drinks deals and quality of club. The club has the usually range of beers, wines and sprits. In terms of drinks promotions each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday selected drinks are £1 all night. It is worthwhile checking what drinks are on offer as with all clubs drinks out with this offer are expensive. Stereo even have drinks deals on Saturday night where drinks are£1.50 for selected drinks before 12, which means it is best to arrive early. Arriving early also means you miss the bulk of the queue.

Massa Nightclub
36-38 Market Street, Edinburgh
Star Rating
4 out of 5
Intro Sentence
Sleek, spacious, simply fantastic nightclub!
The Venue
Club Massa is found just by Waverly train station and thus is near the centre of town for those that wish to use public transport, get a late night snack or pop to another club or bar afterwards. The club has recently had a major facelift and now is very sleek and tidy inside. Indeed that is in part why many of the major DJs play at Massa during their tours. Inside the club is well decorated inside with posters and pictures of previous and up and coming events that are held at Massa. The lighting is really well timed and is sometimes alerted for the big songs. As a result you know when a classic tune is coming on. Always a good idea to have a look at some and plan a future night out!!
The club is very well organized as seating areas are very comfortable, the dancefloor is of a very good size and the bars are well staffed which reduced the time taken to get drinks massively compared to other clubs. The DJ booths are located just above the dancefloor and is the DJ is visible from the bar area so you can see the DJ getting into the music which can be great fun sometimes!
The Atmosphere
Club Massa has a friendly and vibrant atmosphere. The people that go are usually between 20 and 30 and there is an excellent gender balance on most nights, student night especially. A word of caution most of the men are smart/casually dressed (shirts) as the bouncers can on some nights (guest DJ sets, weekends) be strict about dress code. Other than that the bouncers are very friendly and helpful.
The club has a very relaxed atmosphere and there are rarely any major incidents. Indeed on hip-hop and R&B nights it is not uncommon for some breakdancers to do their thing….some of whom are very good. The music is not the loudest and as a result different groups of people often begin chatting together and have a good laugh. This is one of the better Edinburgh clubs for meeting new people.
The Music
The music at Massa is known for being the hub of Edinburgh hip-hop ad R&B with some very talented DJ’s mixing the best of this genre. It proves to be very popular (especially on Sunday nights). The DJ’s at Massa are usually keen to get the audience involved and take requests and mix them into the set. Massa also hosts house music night on Saturdays which is an excellent night, with some of the best house sets in Edinburgh. Furthermore, Massa being on of the most revamped and ever changing Edinburgh clubs plays host to some big names, such as Joey Negro, which are fantastic nights !!
The Drink
As with all the main Edinburgh nightclubs Massa can be expensive to buy drinks without promotions. However, due to the door charge there is an extensive range of promotions, even on weekends. Such deals usually takes the form of either £2 drinks or £1.50 drinks all night. As a result it can be an excellent place to have night out on a budget.
The Avenue Store - Edimburgo
36 Blackford Avenue, Edinburgh, Scotland EH9 2PP
22-12-2007
The Avenue Store is an excellent small shop located in the Blackford Area of Edinburgh. It has a wide range of food and drink for a small business and has a good opening hours. The fact it opens very early and sells warm bakery products was excellent as I came off my night shift all this month :)
The shop is also a good employer of young people, as many of my school friends work there or have worked there.
I would recommend anyone in Blackford who needs a few things to nip down to their local shop and pick up them at the Avenue Store rather than drive to a supermarket.
St. Giles' Cathedral - Edimburgo
High Street, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1RE
08-11-2007
Despite not being religious, I have always been struck by the way that churches and especially cathedrals have such an impact upon a person. The vastness of St Giles compared to the individual is phenomenal and what makes it even more fascinating is that this was built hundreds of years ago without the modern methods of building we have today.
The huge wooden doors open upon into a cool, calm, beautiful and serene environment where you can gather your thoughts or simply gaze at the cathedral. Entry is free but you are given the opportunity to part with a donation.
What is great are the Christmas services that are held which are well worth going to. Even if like me you are atheist the sentiment and passion of the service puts you in the Christmas spirit even if you are somewhat of a Scrooge! Organ recitals in any cathedral, least of all St Giles, are another brilliant experience.
St Giles can be found along the Royal Mile and you really cannot miss it!!
Kebab Mahal - Edimburgo
7 Nicolson Square, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9BH
09-11-2007
Edinburgh has a whole host of kebab shops, probably even hundreds. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between them as they are expensive and most taste the same.
However, Kebab Mehal is different. This Turkish diner provides gives you with an excellent portion for a much cheaper price than you would usually expect and it tastes much better. Furthermore, there is a bigger portion of salad so you can even fool yourself into thinking you has a healthy meal. This Turkish restaurant even serves quality food outside kebabs and there were even vegetarian options last time I was there. Finally on both my three visits the standard of hygiene and speed of service have been excellent.
It provides a great meal to end any quality night out on a high note!!
Revolution Edinburgh - Edimburgo
30a Chambers Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1HU
09-11-2007
Club Revolution is located opposite from the Royal Museum and is easy to get to. This is a very expensive club both in terms of entry fee on the weekends and drinks. Although, there are some drinks promotions they are not especially good value. I can only assume the cost is sue to the high quality of lighting and sound system they have installed. As well as this the seating is comfy. It must be one of the largest clubs in Edinburgh and has three large bars so the time to be served is minimal.
Due to the excellent sound system the music can be too loud to hold a conversation unless you head to the balcony area. The dance-floor is a good size and you will have an excellent time dancing the night away. However, some of the DJ’s cut up some of the songs so it can be hard to dance to music at times.
If you are willing to splash out (£30 plus) on an evening you will have a great time at club Revolution. If you have a tighter budget not there are many other much cheaper bars and clubs in the Cowgate which you would prefer.
Murrayfield Stadium - Edimburgo
Murrayfield, Edinburgh, Scotland EH12 5PJ
09-11-2007
Murrayfield is an excellent venue for the Edinburgh Gunners and Scottish national rugby team to play. The ground is easy to get to by bus and the layout is great as all seats get a good view of the action.
Murrayfield has also been the venue for several concerts and gigs which have all bee successful. The stadium facilities (WC's, staff politeness) are of a high standard. Unfortunately, as with all stadiums the prices of food/drink inside is steep so eat before hand if you are watching the game/band on a budget.
At the end of the match or gig it is great to be leaving the ground with the thousands of other sport or music fans all talking about the same occasion...you even make the traffic on the road stop!
On the walk back there are several sports bars and pub so you can get a drink or food on the way back home if you wish.
All in all Murrayfield is an excellent venue for sports and music events :)
King's Theatre - Edimburgo
2 Leven Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 9LQ
09-11-2007
After going to see ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘The Twits’ in the Kings Theatre I was very impressed not only by the production but by the theatre itself. The elegance of the King’s Theatre is unrivalled and despite being in need of some renovation you can still admire the painting of the ceiling and red velvet seats.
The value for money is excellent as the productions are usually excellent. The range of productions that are hosted by the King’s Theatre is second to none so there will be a play for you at some point each year. There is also several pantomime productions and child friendly plays which makes it a perfect setting for family theatre.
Cameron Toll Shopping Centre - Edimburgo
6 Lady Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH16 5PB
09-11-2007
This is a good shopping centre which provides the main range of shops you would expect in the UK. It is nothing special but is good for local people as it stops you having to travel further afield for shopping.
With a range of shops which included Sainsbury, Optical Express, Boots, Officers Club, WH Smith, BHS, GAME, Virgin Music the mall has what most people would require. The centre itself is well lit, has good facilities and provides an atmosphere which is good for shopping. However, the food court is not very good with a very limited range of outlets.
In the summer if you are shopping with children of 14 years plus there is a large field right next to Cameron Toll to enable you to get on with the shopping whilst the children kick a ball around or sit and chat outside if the weather is good. I know the rugby playing fields stopped my mum having to listen to me whine on!! Furthermore, there are often games/activities for young children around Christmas and Easter time.
