St Andrew's Church - Enfield
Market Place, Enfield Town , London EN2 6LT
21-04-2008
(atualizado em 22-07-2008)
Such a wonderful, ancient and beautiful looking church, in the heart of Enfield Town, behind the market place. Although no one knows exactly how old it is, estimates range from 800 to 1000 years.
There are so many interesting things to see when you are inside. The earliest parts of the church date from the 13th century and include the south wall with its lancet-shaped unglazed window.
Two stained glass windows are definitely worth a look. The first is in memory of Thomas Roos, First Earl of Rutland, and dates from 1531. His coat of arms is encircled by the blue ribbon of the garter. The second window depicts the nuns of Holywell, weeping for their founder, Sir Thomas Lovell.
One of the great features of the church is the organ, and its carved wooden organ case, created in 1752/3. I’ve often walked pass on a Saturday morning and heard someone practising. It’s a wonderful sound and makes my weekend shopping trip a little more bearable.
Ye Olde Cherry Tree - Southgate
The Green, Southgate, London N14 6EN
21-07-2008
This used to be a ye olde boozer with a small restaurant but it’s now essentially a restaurant that has a bar.
It sits in a beautiful old building by Southgate Village Green, and has been in existence for more than 400 years.
The food won’t blow you away, but it is good, and reasonably priced. The sirloin steak, onion rings, chips and peas, gets a big thumbs up from me. And because I’m a growing lad I always go for the chocolate puddings. The chocolate brownie is gorgeous! In the winter the log fires are blazing, which makes it a nice, cosy environment.
If you don’t like chain pubs, then this probably isn’t the place for you. But if you’re so taken by its charms and can’t bear to leave, it also houses a 19 bedroom Innkeeper’s Lodge. Included in the price is a complimentary continental breakfast.
The Beautiful South - Enfield

I half expected to be shown family albums with embarrassing pictures of the waiters when they were children. Such is the unbelievably friendly service at this restaurant that you immediately feel as if you’re one of the family. There’s a bright greeting at the door, and throughout the evening the staff were warm and courteous without being too intrusive.
On offer is French and Mediterranean cuisine and there’s an extensive a la carte or fixed price menu. My tiger prawn starter was heavenly, they were large and succulent and came with spicy noodles. My filet steak main course was incredible, cooked just the way I liked it, and with a generous selection of vegetables. But it’s the delicious strawberry pavlova that lingers on in my memory. The meringue was soft and not too sweet, and the strawberries were to die for. This restaurant certainly knows how to create a winning pudding.
Meals here can be quite pricey but I reckon they’re well worth it.
The Jolly Farmers - Enfield
2 Enfield Road, Enfield, London EN2 7QS
21-07-2008
Tardis-sized pub on the outskirts of London. It does look big from the outside and it appears even bigger on the inside. But they’ve handled the cavernous space well. The pub has been divided into several areas with couches and tables and chairs dotted around. There are many nooks and crannies, so it’s possible to have a cosy, intimate drink for two.
The outside drinking area is pretty, with many hanging baskets, although it’s unfortunate that the pub sits on a busy and noisy main road.
Back inside and there’s a good selection of real ales and wines and the food is OK.
Fishermens Net - Harefield
3 High Street, Harefield, London UB9 6BX
15-07-2008
Whilst sucking curry sauce off a chip is not a particularly attractive image, I can’t help myself. The Fishermens Net in the village of Harefield certainly knows how to serve up a quality chip and an exquisite curry sauce. It’s mild, which suits my palette perfectly, and very, very tasty. Several different spices fight for the attention of my taste buds. The chips are chunky, not too greasy, and the portions are generous.
There’s a varied fish menu on offer - Cod, Rock, Plaice, Skate, Scampi etc. Though I haven’t tried the fish yet, members of my family certainly enjoyed the haddock, stripping it as a piranha would tackle its prey.
The staff are extremely friendly and genuinely welcoming. Finally a word about cleanliness. It has to be the cleanest, tidiest chippy I’ve ever visited. Highly polished tiles and probably the most frequently scrubbed counter in the country.
The Coy Carp - Harefield
Coppermill Lane, Harefield, London UB9 6HZ
14-07-2008
I think it was as the second flock of Canadian Geese came swimming past my window that I realised what a wonderful location for a pub. The Coy Carp in Harefield sits right on the Grand Union Canal, by Coppermill Lock and the River Colne. On one side you can see the birds and on the other, the occasional barge comes floating by. To get to the pub you have to cross a small bridge.
Although they boast a wide selection of ales and wines the Coy Carp is primarily an eatery. There are menus and cutlery on every table on all three floors. I’ve had two meals here: the open chicken pie and bangers ‘n’ mash, so my verdict on the food is based on that. I would class it as good pub food -not great, but not bad either. Good point - the onion gravy was delicious. Bad point -the pastry on the chicken pie was over cooked. However, the chicken was moist and very tasty.
The interior is cosy without being too cramped, but the best spot to dine is outside, overlooking the river. However, I was there during the summer, so of course it rained on both days and I stayed inside.
Forty Hall Museum - Enfield
Forty Hill, London EN2 9HA

Two things I love. Travelling back in time and old stately homes. Until my DIY TARDIS is ready I have to make do with Forty Hall Museum - and it’s not a bad compromise.
Forty Hall is a manor house that was built in 1620’s for Sir Nicholas Rainton, one time Lord Mayor of London. It’s an imposing pile set in acres of public parkland.
The collections concentrate on the history of Enfield, with a particular focus on everyday objects. So there’s an incredible amount of pottery and ceramics from the 17th and 18th centuries. Of particular interest to me are the Roman pottery and glass from excavations in the borough.
Now to some people Enfield is the back end of nowhere, but this fantastic borough has some seriously enthralling history and it’s well reflected in the museum. Romans once probably stomped their way through places where I now get stuck in traffic, and Queen Elizabeth 1 was partial to the occasional visit. It’s believed she stayed at Elsyng Palace; its site is located within Forty Hill. Excavations from that site can also be seen in the museum.
As much as I love poking my nose round museums they can become a little tiring after a while. There’s only so much information that my tiny brain can absorb. But at Forty Hall I’ve toured the collections in two halves - with a healthy interval spent strolling round the beautiful grounds.
It really is a superb place to visit.
NEW RIVER LOOP - Enfield
Enfield Town, London EN2 6BQ
09-07-2008
It’s easy to forget that some of London’s suburbs are home to glorious sights. The New River Loop is a pretty 2 km stretch of land by the New River. There’s a wonderful old bridge, well-maintained lawns and some attractive wildlife.
The New River Loop sits just outside Enfield Town and though bordered by main roads, the noise is not too intrusive.
On those rare occasions when the sun makes an appearance I find this a perfect spot to gently bake under the afternoon sunshine.
If you want to do something more energetic, there’s a nice walk to be had by the river and through Enfield Town Park. You may even be followed by some of the local wildlife that doesn’t seem too bothered by the presence of so many chilled-out humans. Coots, mallards and Mute swans are amongst the area’s many visitors.
British Museum - Bloomsbury

This is one of my favourite places to go for a walk in all London Town. I’ve spent many a happy lunch hour there.
The small inner courtyard has been transformed by the Tardis effect of a spectacular glass roof that makes this public space appear bigger than it actually is. It has also turned what was rather drab part of the museum into an area of magic and dreamlike qualities, that’s so airy and bright.
The temptation will be to look up all the time so be careful of bumping into the hundreds of other people who are doing exactly the same thing.
Wildwoods Water Garden Centre - Londres
Theobalds Park Road, Crews Hill, London EN2 9BP
27-05-2008
The Piranha took one look, bared its teeth and headed in my direction. Fortunately there were several centimetres of glass between it and me, and skin and limbs were spared.
I was standing in Wildwoods Water Garden Centre, staring at one of the many aquariums which house an almost unbelievable range of exotic and colourful fish, from all the oceans of the world.
There’s something incredibly soothing about a visit to Wildwoods. As well as the fish there are hundreds of aquariums, ponds, water features and associated accessories. I’m probably their worst customer as I’ve never actually bought anything there. I just love staring at the fish and the ornate ponds.
Friends of mine who do keep fish tell me that this is the only place for them - the staff being incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.
They even have a mail order service, so if you can’t make it into the store, they’ll send the fish in the post! I cod you not. (sorry it just came out).
