The Mayhew Animal Home - Kensal Green
Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green, London NW10 6BJ
08-07-2008
The Mayhew do a fantastic job of looking after their rescue animals. I went there for a cat but left heartbroken as I wanted to take all the little animals home for me.
They are a charity & look after their animals well. The cats have their own outside area to play in & lots of space. A few rescue places have seemed quite depressing for me as they are so limited in what they can do as the rescue homes cannot afford to do more. The Mayhew somehow makes it seem like they are providing an interim home rather than a cage for their animals.
If you do go there please give generously, they do an amazing job with their animals & the aftercare is second to none. You can see how much they care about their animals, it’s heartening to see.

I took my long haired cat to be groomed here as she was finding the heat difficult. I was quite anxious about leaving her for a few hours - and it turns out I had good reason to be.
I’m sure this place is good for dogs, but they really have no idea at all about cats. Her nerves were frazzled and so were mine after I first saw her.
I asked them to cut her fur quite short & for them to leave a tuft at the end of her tail like a lion (don’t laugh!) My poor girl came back to me looking more like a squirrel - they had shaved all of her body hair off apart from her tail & her head & her paws up to her body. She looks ridiculous!
They had obviously used clippers on her as her nipples were bleeding where they had been caught in the clippers. Her fur was not evenly cut & the fur hadn’t been blended so it looked like she was wearing a big furry comedy hat! She really did look ridiculous & I can’t imagine letting an animal leave looking like that - but they did.
Anyway if you have a cat, avoid this place like the plague. I’m certainly not letting them lay any fingers on my cat again!

I absolutely LOVE this place. I was lucky enough to live nearby and to be able to have regular curry evenings here with my friends. It’s tucked away in Whitechapel & is about 5 minutes walk from Brick Lane, it might as well be on a different planet as far as the quality of food is concerned!
It’s a bring your own bottle (no corkage charge!) place & the food is truly wonderful & remarkably cheap for what you get.
The place is always full, I’ve never seen it empty, even at lunchtime. It is a truly very bustly place with waiters running around at top speed. You do feel a little bit rushed but you can’t hog the table all night I suppose.
I’ve taken lots of my friends here & it has always been an excellent choice.
It’s one of London’s best kept secrets & blows away any of the Brick Lane Imposters!

The food here is alright considering the area. This place is ideal for after work drinks (as long as you don’t mind being surrounded by insurance brokers still on their lunch breaks).
What makes this place great though are the staff, they are helpful, friendly & always pleased to help!

Wow, this place has totally transformed from being a mostly-emptyish 'old mans’ pub to a modern gastropub with excellent food & a wide & varied clientele. The beer garden has been refurbished & is a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon.
The food really is outstanding, using high quality seasonal ingredients & a lot of imagination. The staff are all very good, there is one waitress who is outstanding & quite zany. She makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. It’s now hard to get a table on some evenings so book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Why don’t they do more shows like this? I loved every second of it & spent the next couple of weeks humming very inappropriate songs to myself.
The adult themes & the puppetry work so well & encourage the inner child that most of us still have to enjoy themselves & behave in a slightly ridiculous manner (well, me, anyway!).
I would recommend this to anyone with a sense of humour, although it isn’t one for those easily offended!
Puppet sex rocks!!!

I think I may be in a minority of 1 here but I really hated the show. I had to take clients here and I am still missing those 3 hours of my life which I will never get back!
I’m sure if I’d have watched this when I was 12 I would have enjoyed it but as an adult watching I found it excruciating & was counting the minutes until the end. The story was quite predictable, the characters quite annoying & some of the voices grating.. I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the dialogue & thought that whoever was writing the script could have done alot better.
Each to their own, I guess!

I love shopping here. I knew it would be good the first time when I had to queue for 15 minutes outside as it was so busy.
They are very knowledgeable about the fish that they sell & they have an excellent range of produce, including frozen seafood, excellent accompaniments & seasonal produce that goes well with seafood like samphire, MMmm…
They don’t always have exactly what you might want, but that is usually because it is out of season. They will happily recommend other food when they don’t have what you want. They will prepare the food while you wait & are always happy to help with any requests.
Highly recommended for anyone that likes fresh seafood - although get there early to avoid disappointment!

Unfortunately Qype does not enable me to give no stars to an institution.
I had an absolutely awful experience here and if somebody reads this & it doesn’t happen to them as a result, I’ve done my job.
I booked an appointment with the most senior stylist ( or Creative Director, dontcha know?) as I have quite curly hair & it’s best to find somebody that knows what they are doing. All I asked for was a bob.. I got some misshapen blob on my head which had long bits & short bits all over the place & was still lopsided no matter how many times I cried & screamed & he tried to fix it.
In the end I was running out of hair for the man to fix & I decided not to risk what was left of my hair at this place.
I did eventually manage to get it fixed (to a degree) 2 days later after lots of emailing photos to head office & shouting & crying.
However, it took six months for it to grow back to an acceptable length (the length I originally wanted it cut to) and for me to feel comfortable going back into a hairdressers. I’ve since found out via somebody that works for Toni & Guy that the lopsided look is a trademark at Toni & Guy and that they do it deliberately so that people will know that you have had your hair cut (butchered in my opinion) there.
Anyway, one to avoid if you can… Don’t make the same mistake that I did!

Unfortunately I had a bad experience here.
I took my & my partner’s bikes for their annual service. They were both finished quickly (although quite expensively at nearly £200 for both including parts). So far, so good..
2 weeks later, when I took my bike out for only the second time after servicing, my brake started making a very unhealthy noise & then stopped working altogether. Luckily for me, I was not on a busy road at the time!
I was near an Evans & took my bike in to see what the problem was. The brake cable had not been replaced at all & was quite in a bad state & not even roadworthy!
I think from now on I will take my bikes to Evans when they need to be serviced. At least I know they have quality control & can be trusted!
