1 Lombard Street - The Brasserie - City of London

1 Lombard Street, London EC3V 9JU

25-01-2012

This is the Restaurant, behind the brasserie from the entrance.

The brasserie is rather noisy, so the restaurant is probably the better choice. Well spaced table and airy high ceiling, but not a particularly splendid room.
Positive welcome and a clear lead to our table and a smiling welcome from the Maitre ’d.

We were not offered the set lunch, which was rather good when we found it after the meal.

Good bread was provided in good time, but the starter took 30 minutes. The rest of the meal was paced well. Most of us were not drinking, and the soft drinks never arrived.

Wine list was bearably priced if you are careful with your choice, the food from the ALC is stiff, with the usual 12.5%., but nicely sized portions with near ideal ’elaboration, so you really get to get stuck into the flavours but there is not too much on the plate. And up-to-spec it is too, very tasty.

So pretty pricey, but hey there you are in front of the Bank of England.

Vanilla Black - Holborn

17-18 Tooks Court, London EC4A 1LB

A very pleasant lunch, nice decor & helpful staff.

Inventive cooking, nearly all of which was just right, with only a couple of ‘not for me but great just the same’ combos. Visually stunning food.
Will have to try it a couple more times…..
Reasonable wine list and we drank well.

Wiltons Restaurant - St. James's

55 Jermyn Street, St. James's, London SW1Y 6LX

15-12-2011

Very smart and also ‘clubby’ in an exclusive privileged way.

But a warm welcome and service that is genuinely pleased to help you, relaxing you, which is partly what you are after.

Very attractive inside, quiet and very comfortable.

Very simple dishes that make getting them perfect more difficult, so one ‘special of the day’ (salmon) underwhelmed me, but the rest of the meal was fine and the pud especially so.

Some good wines and just possible to be able to drink there, but certainly seriously expensive. Hence my rating.

Pollen Street Social - Mayfair

8-10 Pollen Street, London W1S 1NQ

15-12-2011

Went for lunch, took a lunch special offer.

We arrived early, as they were just opening, so they were not quite ready but they made us welcome just the same and we sat in the bar area for a few minutes.

Modern, nicely spaced tables, but every surface hard.

A good range of choice on the lunch special. When it came it was simply outstanding, and very much enjoyed. Reasonable sized portions, and yes the pud was even more outstanding.

The lady sommelier was freindly knowledgable and helpful, so we did well there too.

But the noise…. worse than school dinners. We had to shout at each other at the end. At this level of quality I don’t need buzz, the food supplies it.

Jason the chef was at the exit and was a delight to meet & talk to.

There is a private room downstairs that could provide a better ambience…..

Hibiscus - Mayfair

29 Maddox Street, London W1S 2PA

Went there fairly recently and it was very good indeed. Pretty pricey, but apart from one mistake on a main dish (quickly remedied) it lived up to the hype. Very smart & attractive inside, and a pleasure to be seated there. Some acceptably priced wines if you search them out, but no bargains.

Have been again for the ‘tasting’ lunch. That took a weeks pension…..and we took advantage of their corkage policy which is actually pretty sensible, though don’t take plonk, that is insulting.

Eight courses, all beautifully prepared & presented, a 7 of them were unusual, inventive & delicious, and the other did not work for me but I could clearly see what was being aimed at, and so I mention it only to emphasise so you are prepared for it.

Do go.

Murano - Mayfair

20 Queen Street, London W1J 5PP

Top notch restaurant.

Knowledgeable enthusiastic friendly welcoming staff. Comfortable well spaced tables and smart décor. A very nice elevated table right at the back if you can get it. Just relax & be confident.

Have been there twice and on both occasions thoroughly enjoyed myself. having eaten at The Connaught when Angela was cooking there, it is more of the same ‘her style’ and it shows.

It is however in Mayfair & the price reflects that, even with the set lunch it was not inexpensive, so be prepared. Did not see her in the open plan kitchen on either visit. Perhaps that took a little sparkle off, and perhaps I should rob the bank & try dinner. Nevertheless some innovative dishes that were very pleasing, and of course an excellent wine list, helped by a real wine enthusiast sommelier.

The Chancery - Holborn

9 Cursitor Street, London EC4A 1LL

12-02-2009 (atualizado em 14-12-2011)

Went for lunch. Staff very impressive as a genuinely happy team, and no sign of recesssion here.

Had the set lunch, which is any selection from the menu rather than specific dishes, and was pleasantly surprised as it exceeded my expectations on every dish. Lots of thought went into the dishes, with the caveat that some little things did not quite work on my spinach & ricotta ravioli starter. The shared ‘Cote du Boeuf’ was thoroughly enjoyable, and they managed to mix my well done with my other half’s on the hoof. Desert was a nice concoction of blackcurrant sorbet and cream sandwich wafer.

Using the ‘FT lunch for a £5’ worked well and we got out after an extended visit at a good price.

The set meal includes an amuse bouche and represents good value for money. The wine list is a little foggy, but does not have a huge range whilst having something for nearly everyone.

Will go again. And have twice more and up to spec on both visits.

The Artichoke Restaurant - Londres

9 Market Square, Old Amersham, Bucks, London HP7 0DF

14-12-2011

Certainly top end and pricey.

But they made us feel welcome, and that takes out a lot of the anxiety of expensive fine dining. As to if they would remember us on a return, perhaps so.

We sat in a small semi-enclosed area in the front, classy but the acoustic was not that good.

We had a really good dinner and the food was first class, nicely paced and lived up to our expectations.

A knowledgeable and helpful sommelier made our choice of wines mostly for us, but his decisions were sound and they enhanced the food as well as being drinkable in their own right. This allowed us to be lazy and can be welcome.

Currently well worth a visit.

Enoteca Turi - Putney

28 Putney High Street, London SW15 1SQ

14-12-2011

Very neatly laid out inside and comfortable. Staff good.

I went as part of a party, so I did not choose the wines, and the ones we had, though fitting well enough with the dishes served, I felt could have been more exciting. No doubt they were very typical of the area in Italy.

The food was well above average, and the portions perhaps over generous, though that again is very Italian.

I would recommend it if you are in the area, and friends of mine say they have had superb food there.

Rocpool - Inverness

1 Ness Walk, Inverness, Highlands and Islands IV3 5NE

01-03-2009 (atualizado em 14-12-2011)

A really good place to eat in in Inverness. Light airy, very stylish loos(!).

Good lunch menu with plenty of choices and not a bad wine list either. Locals like it too.

Like other Inverness restaurants they have joined the ‘early dinner special’ and jolly good it is too.

Genuinely helpful staff.
