play.com - St. Helier

PO Box 192, St. Helier, Jersey

19-11-2008

I buy from Play.com quite alot, mainly due to the competitive prices and no postage to pay.

They have a geat selection of stuff from books and cd’s to gadgets and clothing. They also sell electricals, which is a bit different from most online retailers who market themselves only in the CD, books and DVD arena.

The site is user friendly. Most stock has been reviewed, which helps if you’re a little unsure as to what you are buying. You also have the option to buy new and used which is always handy in keeping costs down and grabbing a bargain.

My only gripe with Play is the slow delivery. I did put the first one down to the postal service, but unfortunately it happens all the time.

I guess they must be doing something right though, as I keep buying from them. Nifty little site, does what it says on the tin.

National Trust: Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate - Wilmslow

Styal, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 4LA

19-11-2008

With Christmas coming, this is one of the best places in the North West to visit if you are looking for an insight into Victorian living and working.

Quarry Bank Mill is set on a Styal Estate, which at the turn of the century was a working Cotton Mill and community feted as one of the better places to end up if you worked in this industry.

Set in some beautiful Cheshire countryside, Quarry Bank has retained all of the old Mill Machinery and living qtrs, offering visitors the chance to experience what is must have been like to live and work in this thriving industry. It is set over a vast area including the mill, outhouses, workers cottages and woodland.

More modern features of this Nationl Trust property include the usual visitor centre, gift shop and eateries.

It is most impressive over the Christmas period, with staff in costume, and traditional decorations.

It’s great for people of all ages, kids in particular, as they focus on what it was like for children to live and work here. I guess it’s meant to make children appreciate what they have in the 21st century.

It really is a great day out, plenty to see and do, as much fresh air as you can take. A must.

Oklahoma - Manchester

74 High Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M4 1ES

I love this place. It takes you back to your childhood, if you were born circa 1978. It combines a cafe section, gift shop and record store.

Set back from the main shopping area of the city, in the very 'trendy’ Northern Qtr, Oklahoma is the sort of place you can lounge around in for hours on end.

They have a good selection of food, if a little inflated on the price. And whilst the service is good, the staff could be a little more 'enthusiastic,’ but then this might be the whole point of the laid back, pop in for a cuppa and a browse setup they are trying to promote.

Whilst I haven’t checked out their record store, I guess that would be self explanatory, it makes for a good live jukebox whilst you go about your business. But the best bit is the shop, selling everything from kitsche to novelty items to sweets and treats which I as a kid use to buy on the way home from school.

Great fun. Get yourself along and grab a smoothie. Yum

Royal Exchange Theatre - Manchester

St. Anns Square, Manchester, Greater Manchester M2 7DH

19-11-2008

This place is a haven of peace and tranquility in the middle of a busy city.

You can step off the high street, and leave the crowds and the noise behind. The silence hits you the minute you walk in. Due to the way in which the interior is constructed, with it’s glass roof, it is at it’s best viewed on a sunny day. The light floods through the coloured glass to really highlight the beauty of the structure inside.

There is a bar service, restaraunt and craft centre. It is the sort of place you can while away a few hours, and that’s all without even attending a performance.

If you want to get a feel of the exchange as a working theatre, go for a visit on Mon or Tues of the week a new play is about to open. You get to see the cast and crew setting up and rehearsing, which makes this place very unique.

They have a good programme of events, and more recently a free programme calle special fx, where on a Friday evening, you can watch free entertainment in the great hall, with happy hour on the bar. Go see some established and up and coming acts do there thing before the main performance starts.

A truly beautiful space, with an intimate feel during performance, you could almost reach out and touch the performers.

The Woman In Black @ The Fortune Theatre - Covent Garden

30-31 Russell Street, Holborn, London WC2B 5HH

19-11-2008

I went to see this play at The Fortune Theatre a couple of years ago, and my word, what an experience.

We decided on a matinee performance, as we’d heard about this play, and didn’t fancy coming out in the dark afterwards. I know, a little silly, but there you go.

It’s a cosy little theatre, and whilst we could only afford the 'cheap seats’ it didn’t feel we were any further removed from the action than what you might feel in some larger theatre’s. The atmosphere permeated the whole building.

I’d read a few Susan Hill novels, and they play on your imagination. I’d also seen the television version and was scared witless by it, still am. But I’m telling you, they are nothing compared to this experience. It was chilling. Two actors, an engaging story, simple set but all put together cleverly to add real tension and suspense. There are some very jumpy moments, but I won’t ruin it for you.

All said, you must go and see it. Take a friend, and don’t worry about trying to get to a matinee performance, cos it didn’t make a jot of difference. We were creeped out for weeks. Scary.
