Wrexham Waterworld - Wrexham
Holt Street, Wrexham, Wales LL13 8DH
24-12-2011
I would heartily recommend Waterworld, especially if you have children. We found Chester pool far too cold (and also a bit dull) but the Wrexham one has:
a main pool, a much warmer toddler/baby pool which is safe from excessive splashing! plus the main pool can be sectioned off to make another (slightly colder) junior pool in the event that there is an “accident” in the toddler pool.
Also there is another very warm little pool where there are gentle rapids which our 2 year old loves going round (in our arms of course) and a jacuzzi in the middle which he also likes the bubbles in.
The changing rooms are unisex with plenty of larger cubicles containing fold down baby change tables, and there is a cafe downstairs selling jacket potatoes and that sort of thing.
Plus there is a tyre flume for kids and grown-up kids, so everyone’s a winner!
Cheshire Farm Ice Cream - Tattenhall
Drumlan Hall Farm, Newton Lane, Chester, Cheshire CH3 9NE
30-11-2011
This is a fantastic free morning/afternoon out. We have taken our one year old there at least five times with various combinations of relatives. No entry fee, and lots of farm animals (pigs, goats, donkeys and chickens) to see as well as some rabbits and guinea pigs. (there are hand washing facilities so that you can clean up before you eat the ice cream!)
Then inside there is an ice-cream parlour with dozens of flavours (although not as adventurous as they could be) as well as a smaller one with “kids” ice cream flavours such as cola, and various sweets flavour.
There is also a shop selling toys, presents and more ice-cream (we picked up several litres of Christmas Pudding flavour which was on offer and out of season during out last trip).
There is also a cafe serving lunches, although this is very much of the jacket potato and beans variety and I wouldn’t recommend it for anything more than a quick bite to eat.
Behind the cafe is a children’s play area (under 1 metre tall give free access to the toddler area) older/taller children have to pay to access the play barn type facility.
If that wasn’t enough there are also two adventure playgrounds and they have also added gentle (kid friendly) quad biking and also mini golf although we haven’t tried either of those as they are a little old for our toddler.
Would highly recommend this as a free day out (no entry fee and the animals and playgrounds and toddler area are free to access, although it won’t be totally free because it is impossible to resist the ice cream!
Northgate Village Surgery - Chester
Northgate Avenue, Chester, Cheshire CH2 2DX
27-11-2008
This is my (very!) local doctor’s surgery. It is located only 2 monutes from my house which is very handy indeed. Also it was set up to service the houses in the Northgate Village Development so if you move into a house there you are automatically eligable to sign up.
The reception staff are always very helpful and will do their best to get you an appointment at short notice. The doctors that I have seen there have been very professional (obviously!) and courteous, giving very helpful advice. You also feel that they are listening to you properly and giving you a good amount of time (they don’t push you out of the door).
The best thing is that there is a pharmacy build onto the surgery so you can very quickly pick up your perscriptions as well as usual cold, flu medicines, bandages etc.
If you live in Northgate Village then you should definitely sign up, before you get ill!
Leeds Corn Exchange - Leeds
Call Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS1 7BR
22-11-2008
EDIT: Apparently the Corn Exchange I knew and loved is no longer! All the cool shops have been replaced with a food hall. So the review below is a little out of date! :
If consider yourself in any way Alternative, Emo, Goth or Indie then you should definitely visit the corn exchange if you are anywhere near Leeds. The building is amazing and the inside has been transformed from it’s former life as a Corn Exchange (funny that!) to a load of fantastic little indie shops selling a great range of clothing, gifts and novelties.
I have bought several items from there in the past, al have been of great quality and a refreshing change from the usual junk you get in regular chain shops.
Everyone is really friendly and the place has a great atmosphere.
kerryclear You should check it out this month (Nov 2010) there's pop up shops all around the top floor and events every weekend.

knibbd Unfortunately, I rarely get to Leeds now that my children are all fully qualified (Leeds Met being the reason for many visits). I will make the effort sometime in the New Year as I love the city....ust don't tell any of my scouse mates!

The Brindley Arts Centre - Runcorn
High Street, Runcorn, Cheshire WA7 1BG
21-11-2008
The Brindley Arts Centre is a good venue. It’s fairly small but this allows for some intimate gigs. We recently went to see Tim Minchin the comedian there and it was a great show. We were sat in the balcony but had a great view and didn’t feel too far removed from the performer.
The seating is very comfortable, although I would not recommend paying any extra for a box, as they didn’t seem to have such good seating in, nor did they have a particularly good view.
The arts centre puts hosts a variety of shows to suit all ages and tastes, and offers a bar area downstairs and a family friendly cafe area upstairs offering snacks and drinks both before the show and during the interval.
The toilets were clean and despite the number of people, there were no queues.
On problem with the Brindley is its location. If you are coming over from Chester then driving is really the only option. The alternative is either a silly 1.5 hour train journey or a 20 minute train journey and then a bus.
knibbd You should try it from Warrington! We tried public transport once - never again! We had to leave before the show actually began in order to get the last train from Beechwood station as the main Runcorn station doesn’t run trains to Warrington. To get home on the bus, we would have had to leave even earlier, and gone via Widnes or Liverpool. When I wrote to the publicity department at the Brindley, they basically said that they couldn’t do anything about it - which is very true, unfortunately, as it is an excellent venue.

Habitat - Chester
Pepper Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 1DF
22-11-2008
The Habitat store in Chester is to be found if you take the furthest exit from the shopping centre. This puts it quite a way from the main centre area.
They do have a lovely range of goods in store and it’s worth checking every few months at the new season’s range. I always find Habitat quite expensive but the items are of god quality, sort of like a slightly more upmarket Ikea. Sadly as we currently rent, we have had to limit our purchases to a few mugs and things rather than some of the fantastic furniture and lighting that they offer.
The store is expansive and not constrained by the pokey nature of most of Chester’s shops. This means that there is plenty of room to browse without being accosted by staff.
Holland & Barrett - Chester
7 Grosvenor Precinct, Chester, Cheshire CH1 1EE
22-11-2008
Holland & Barrett is part of a large chain of shops. The Chester branch is located in the better of the two shopping centres, although it is hidden at one end so can be difficult to find if you don’t know your way around.
They sell a good range of healthy things for us waify vegetarian types including a lot of healthy snack bars and drinks.
My personal favourite items are the chocolate covered raisins which are better than those form Julian Graves are they arent covered in Shellac which is derived from crushed beetles. I have also become somewhat addicted to the spicy, crunchy giant corn kernels which are an amazing snack, which are so much better than salted peanuts that I think they should be offered in pubs throughout the land (although I don’'t visit enough pubs to keep them in the corn snack selling business)
Holland and Barrett isn’t the cheapest place but it does have a good range under one roof and sometimes has some decent offers on.
Gamestation - Chester
39 Foregate Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 1HD
22-11-2008
Gamestation is almost directly opposite the Game store, as Chester seems to only have shops in pairs (HMV and Zavvi are very close, as are the two best chip shops). If there is any competition between them it is to see who can be the worst value!
The main problems with Gamestation in Chester is firstly that the store is a very long thin shape (which is a issue with most of Chester’s shops) and they have made matters worse by positioning the till right in the way so that if anyone is queuing it is nearly impossible to get to where the games are displayed.
The second problem is that when you do get there, to the bargains, deals and discount areas, even the pre-owned Wii games for example cost more than brand new copies do online. I can’t understand how real work game shops surive in this era of online preorders. Most games seem to have a 20 or 30 percent premium on them, but perhaps people still buy them because they are too impatient to wait for their games to arrive in the post (why not pre-order, then you get them delivered to your door on the day of release?!)
I’m the current economic climate I will be surprised if Gamestation are still there in February.
Game - Chester
46 Foregate Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 1HA
22-11-2008
Game in Chester is a medium sized store and offers the latest games for PC, PS3, XBox 360, DS, PSP and Wii. Unfortunately they never seem to be the cheapest, especially not when you compare to online retailers.
It has been a very long time since I have bought a game in the real world as they just cannot compete with online stores. Game do offer a loyalty card but the points you get are worth so little that you would have to be buying a few games every visit to make it worth saving up for a free one.
The staff seem to be ok although you always feel like they are going to come up and try to see you something if you hang around in once spot for too long.
Game is a good shop if you want to see what new releases are out or if your other half is shopping somewhere else and you have a few minutes to waste.
Madurodam - Haia
George Maduroplein 1, 2584 RZ 's-Gravenhage
22-11-2008
Madurodam is a wonderful miniature version of Holland. If you have ever dreamed of being a giant then this is the place for you! I’ve visited this place twice, once as a child, and once as an adult. (It seemed a lot smaller the second time around).
Madurodam is less of a model village and more of a model country. As well as the traditional houses, castles and of course windmills, there is a model clog factory (where you can get a pair of tiny ceramic clogs to take home), a model football stadium, a model train station and hundreds of other beautifully crafted miniatures.
There is of course a gift shop which sells models, including paper windmills of various designs which I had great fun making when we returned to England.
It sounds like a terrible cliché but Madurodam really is a great day out for young and old! If you thought Holland was small, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
knibbd I’ve heard of this place and didn’t know exactly where it was. Thanks for the description and review.
