Ye Olde Whyte Lion - Locksbottom

Farnborough Common, Locksbottom, London BR6 8NE

18-11-2008

This pub looks really olde worlde from the outside, but although contained in an old building - the oldest pub in the area apparently - it is fresh and modern inside, with plenty of tables and a couple of cosy window seats. There is a reasonable range of beers available and the food is a little more original than most chain pubs allow for. as the pub is right next to a large hospital, there seems to be quite a lot of staff and patients frequenting the place, along with a few locals, which made for a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The pub has a large roaring fire in the winter, and a lovely bright, well cared for patio garden in the summer - a perfect pub all year round!

Ask - Orpington

My other half and I really enjoy this place. It is a chain, but to be fair doesn’t feel like it is! From the outside the place looks pretty small, but as you go through to the resteraunt it opens out to accommodate around 50 tables. despite this the venue has a warm intimate feel, the staff are friendly and the food always looks both fresh and freshly cooked. We usually order pizzas, but there are plenty of pasta and salad options too. My only quibble is that it can take some time to get served during peak times, although when this happened to us we were offered a complementary drink and apology. I would also recommend booking if you plan to visit on Friday or Saturday evenings.

The Maxwell Hotel - Orpington

Usually I’d say this is a pretty mediocre pub, but there isn’t much choice in Orpington, so this elevates it to rather good status! The pub has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, a reasonable range of beers (although real ale fans might be disappointed!) and serves the usual generic pub food. It is a mix of locals, and during the evening rush hour, a few suits,as the pub is situated just outside Orpington station. The pub has a large screen TV and advertises Sky Sports, but whilst there is a lot of sport on the TV, apart from on Saturday afternoons when it is quite noisy, it is possible to enjoy a quiet drink. There is a large bar area and the screens are only one side, thus keeping both the sports and non sports fans happy. There is also a jukebox and pool table for the more energetic, or you can sit down in front of the fire with a pint and a newspaper, which the pub usually has a selection of available for customers to read. Overall, if you are in the area, it is worth dropping in if you fancy a pint or reasonably priced meal.
