Supa Snooker - Consett

18-24 Newmarket Street, Consett, Durham DH8 5LQ

11-05-2011

Standard snooker club, table hire is well priced, drinks are reasonable. There isn't really much else to say.

The barmaid was decent looking, in a chavvy sort of way.

Wetherspoons - Consett

Victoria Road, Consett, Durham DH8 5BQ

11-05-2011

Just your standard Wetherspoons, the McDonalds of the drink trade.

Unlike some of the marginally better ones, Consett's is architecturally mundane both inside and out. A huge brick building with entrances and both ends and a row of windows along the side. Clearly the designer planned it using lego.

Inside it is almost as exciting as the outside. Near each entrance is a raised eating area, and in between; a vast sea of tables in rows. There's no music whatsoever, so the background noise is the constant rumbling of idle chatter. This does nothing but add to the whole 'school dinner hall' feel the place has.

The bar itself is big and usually busy, staff seemed ok, although a few of them acted as if in serving you a drink they had done a great favour for you. Drinks were standard for a Wetherspoons.

All in all, it's just a Wetherspoons, nothing flash, nothing interesting, cheap drinks, cheap food, no character & no atmosphere. There are always other options.

De Vere Slaley Hall - Hexham

Slaley, Hexham, Northumberland NE47 0BY

11-05-2011

I was at Slaley on a golfing weekend a couple weeks and had a reasonable time. Check in was fairly slow, but our room was easy enough to find after that and was alright inside. However, I was on a golf break deal and wouldn't have been hugely impressed if I'd paid full price, certainly not the four stars it claims to be.

The main bar was very nice and had a modern feel to it, staff were friendly and talkative but didn't seem particularly knowledgeable on drinks. On the night we ordered some cocktails that took a long time to prepare.

Food was decent but fairly expensive for what it was. We chose to eat elsewhere.

Finding the golf area from my room was fairly straightforward, although a bit of trek down a lift which wasn't helped when a small woman leading some staff around almost knocked me over!

Both golf courses were fantastic, I would definitely play them again. The Hunting was probably the better of the two, but was fairly busy. The Priestman was much quieter and a more enjoyable experience.

MadaM - Champs Elysées

128 rue la Boétie, 75008 Paris

11-05-2011

Went here on a whim and I was impressed, music was brilliant, lots of french house and dance like the other reviewer has said.

It was easy enough to find, although I drunkenly stumbled upon it. I would definitely go back.

Inside it was very modern and dark but with other places brightly lit up by neon(?) lighting.

The place was quite busy, and the boy:girl ratio was pretty high on the girl side which is always a plus!

The Centurion - Newcastle upon tyne

Central Station Neville Street, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 5DG

11-05-2011

I'm a huge sucker for places with beautiful architecture, and this place is stunning. It's huge, not just floorspace wise, but like every other reviewer has said, the ceiling is ridiculously high & the walls are lined with gorgeous Victorian tiles. It's kinda like stepping back in time going inside, or being in a different country.

Drinks were average priced and the staff seemed alright, being part of the train station the location is centralized and easy to get to other places from. It wasn't particularly busy when I went in (about 11pm on a thursday), but I can imagine it getting really busy on a weekend.

Beehive - Newcastle upon tyne

2 High Bridge, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 1EN

11-05-2011

Don't let the bigg market location or colourful looking punters lurking outside put you off. This pub is full of character and completely took me by suprise.

Initially when some friends told me to meet them in 'the beehive' I was little bit confused, why were we going to this crappy little pub in the middle of the crappy end of town?

How wrong could I have been, this place is a quality little boozer. The drinks or cheap, find me a drinkable pint for less than 2 quid anywhere else in the town centre and I'll tip my hat to you.

The regulars are all nice guys who will have bit of banter with anyone willing to talk to them. As I've said, the drinks are cheap. The location is decent.

But, the biggest thing that got me was the building itself. Apart from the odd broken window, it's absolutely stunning. Almost everything is art nouveau in style, the doors have long leaf shaped windows, the ceilings in almost organic looking plaster relief... everything is awesome, just a little neglected.

I was taken back by it, the place is brilliant, get yourself there!

Gotham Town - Newcastle upon tyne

Neville Street, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 5DF

08-10-2009

Gotham Town is, as you can guess from the name, a big gimmick. What started out as a bit of harmless fun has spawned a bar of questionable design, point and clientele. The music is dodgy at best and at is worst is ugly. The interior is dirty with a bizarre mix of gothic spires and chandeliers blended with art deco gargoyles and smoke machines. It has to be experienced to be believed.

All that said though, for 2 quid a treble you cab hardly expect the ritz, and the location is good too.

Sexmuseum - Burgwallen-Nieuwe Zijde

Damrak 18, 2012 Amsterdam

04-06-2009

Probably the most pointless museum I’ve ever been in. Being a tourist and in tourist mode I went to this museum without really looking around the city first. It was perfectly described as 'blackpool meetes sex’. Everything is tasteless and/or tacky. For a more interesting guide to Amsterdam’s sex culture just take a wander through the Red Light District. It’s far more interesting, and you don’t feel like some clueless tourist either.

I’ll give it one thing though, the huge penis is brilliant for novelty photos.

Anne Frank Huis - Amsterdã

Prinsengracht 267, Anne Frank Museum, 1000 AS Amsterdam

04-06-2009

There isn’t really much to say about the place that hasn’t already been said.

A must see, everyone knows her story, wonderful, big queues… blah blah blah. It’s all true.

What a lot of the review fail to point out is that it’s a very unique and quite unnerving museum to go to. The experience you’ll have there is bizarre, as another review pointed out that further you go into the museum the quiter things get. It’s a very absorbing and potentially emotional trip through the house and it’s difficult to convey how worthwhile going is.

We went in the summer, and the heat in the house added to the claustrophibic nature of the place, perhaps making it more hard hitting.

If you’re in Amsterdam for any perior of time then go.

Van Gogh Museum - Museumkwartier

paulus potterstraat 7, Museumplein, 1070 Amsterdam

04-06-2009

Brilliant place, well designed light and airy feel to the whole place. His work isn’t displayed in the 'throw all the famous stuff to the front’ way, but a more thoughful and interesting way. It really helps you understand, or at least attempt to, the way he worked and the changes in his style over time. This place is a must go for any art fan, or anyone for that matter.
