Eighteen months ago Musselburgh’s taste buds were begging for a place just like this. With only a handful of Indian and Chinese restaurants to choose from, East Lothian’s gastronomes would hastily continue on the bypass in search of a good local eatery. However after an extensive renovation of the ‘Auld Hoose’ Musselburgh was gifted with a hidden gem of a very high class.
Tucked in neatly behind North High Street now sits a slick modern restaurant with a very warm homely character. A comfortable lounge awaits guests with plush leather sofas where drinks or coffees can be enjoyed at leisure. The main dining room is decked out with rustic wooden tables and an eclectic array of wooden chairs. There is also a private dining room with large wooden tables and modern leather chairs, which is mainly used for larger parties but also used on busier nights.
At lunchtime an excellent set menu offers a good selection of starters and main courses where if you buy a main course you can choose either a starter of dessert for free, or even add a third course for only £2.50. There is also a wide choice of delectable paninis, baked potatoes and burgers for those looking for something smaller.
Later in the evening the restaurant is a welcome shelter from cold, dark nights with beautiful atmospheric lighting that showcases a collection of local artists work perfectly. The evening menu is where the contemporary spirit of 102 shines through and the creativity of a fresh faced young team in the kitchen is prominent. A compact range of starters that change every couple of months provide an interest for everyone, along with the popular mainstay dishes such as locally sourced mussels which are available in a range of delicious sauces. A selection of ambitious mains that showcase local produce is the highlight of the night with a supreme of chicken breast served with haggis masked with a luscious whisky and chive cream.
Overall Restaurant 102 is the solution to Musselburgh’s need for a friendly and affordable place that welcomes all the family, and its vibrant young feel is echoed through their staff who strive to create a comfortable atmosphere that complements the nature of its menu.
