The Hotel Palomar - Washington
2121 P Street, NW, 20037 Washington
31-03-2011
From the lobby to the rooms, The Hotel Palomar has a chic, modern design. The room I was in was even outfitted with two animal print robes for the guests to wear!
The hotel is in an easy-to-navigate location near Dupont Circle. It is within walking distance of restaurants, bars, shops and the Dupont Circle Metro stop, which is on the Red Line.
The hotel also features a restaurant and bar. I cannot speak for the restaurant, but I found the hotel's swanky little bar a nice spot for sharing wine and cheese.
Lincoln National Memorial - Washington
Ohio Drive SW 900, 20024 Washington
20-02-2011
The Lincoln Memorial offers great views of Washington's sights. Standing on the steps of the memorial, the view ahead includes the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol in the distance. Along the backside of the memorial, visitors can see a little flicker of orange in the distance -- it's the flame on Kennedy's grave at Arlington National Cemetery.
The memorial offers great nighttime views. Go late enough, especially in the winter months, and you may just have the place to yourself.
There is a path you can walk between the memorial and the Washington Monument.
Metropolitan Coffeehouse & Wine Bar - Baltimore
902 S. Charles Street, Federal Hill, 21230 Baltimore
24-07-2010
Upon recommendation from a native of Baltimore and self-proclaimed foodie, my two best girlfriends and I decided to check out Metropolitan Coffeehouse & Wine Bar for a late dinner tonight. I was quite pleased with our decision as we all found our food to be excellent.
Arriving at the tail end of the dinner rush, the main-level, which appears to have a neighborhood pub atmosphere, was quite packed. We did find one open table, but we later learned there was another level upstairs.
The restaurant/coffeehouse/wine bar offers a diverse menu from appetizers to entrees. We ordered the crab and spinach dip as an appetizer, and it was absolutely delicious. It was really creamy and went well with the pita bread. My pistachio encrusted salmon was perfectly grilled, and the accompanying vegetables completed a great meal.
Overall, the prices are pretty normal for this area. You can certainly find more budget meals on the menu like the appetizers and salads, but the majority of the entrees fell into the $12-20 price range. Glasses of wine ran about $6-8 per glass. While the list of wines by the glass was limited, the menu listed more wines by the bottle as well as a nice selection of import and specialty beers.
I would definitely eat at this restaurant in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood again, and I would certainly recommend it too.
International Spy Museum - Washington
800 F St NW, Washington, DC, 800 F St NW Washington
20-06-2010
I had heard excellent things about the International Spy Museum, so I recently took my James Bond-lovin' father and my mother to this museum during their vacation in the DC area. While we found it to be an interesting idea to have a museum dedicated to espionage, we were slightly disappointed in the execution.
The museum experience begins with your selection of your cover ID, about which you are later quizzed. However, after that first exhibit, there is a lot of reading and fewer interactive exhibits. Near the end of the two hours that it took to walk through the museum, I was struggling to keep my eyes open.
Perhaps the coolest exhibit is the James Bond car. Other interesting exhibits include the displays of tools and gadgets used by spies of past and present.
Adult tickets cost $18 at the door, but you can purchase them online via the museum's website for $20. Purchasing the tickets online guarantees entry to the museum for the purchased date. If you do not buy tickets ahead of time, I would suggest going early in the day. Otherwise, the tickets could be sold out. To get to the Spy Museum via the Metro, take the red, green or yellow lines to Gallery Pl-Chinatown, and then exit the metro station at F and 7th streets. The museum will then be one block away.
Club Quarters Downtown - Nova Iorque
William Street 52, New York, NY, 10005 New York

Club Quarters - Downtown is located in the Financial District and Wall Street area, and it is a short walk from the New York Stock Exchange. Also nearby are Battery Park and the South Street Seaport. There is a subway station on Fulton Street, which is just a few blocks away from the hotel. The location is probably great for business trips, but it is a bit out of the way for most tourists.
As for the rooms, they are very clean and modern, but the room I stayed in was small and cramped. The bathroom door was directly in front of the bed, and the door was fashioned with an opaque glass, which made for an awkwardly intimate bonding experience among my friends. The small room somehow housed a queen-size bed with night tables on either side, a chair, a small refrigerator, an armoire and a desk with a chair.
The hotel's greatest perk was free refillable water bottles and an ice-cold water dispenser in the hallway.
Therapy - Nova Iorque
348 West 52nd Street, 10019 New York
11-06-2010
While visiting New York City for a "Sex & The City" inspired girls weekend, we -3 straight girls- wound up at this gay bar in Hell's Kitchen. That's what you get, when you let your gay friends pick the night's destination. Our party of five didn't stay here long, but from the little time we spent at Therapy, I must admit it was a fun change of pace. The best aspect of gay bars, in my opinion, is the music, and Therapy did not disappoint. All the greats--Madonna (circa the 1980s), Britney, Adam Lambert and of course, GAGA--were played that night. Our drinks were extremely well mixed, and the prices weren't too bad either. The crowd was mostly gay men, duh. However, there were a few of us straight (or not?) gals sprinkled in too.
Ellen's Stardust Diner - Nova Iorque
1650 Broadway, 10019 New York
02-06-2010
If you don't get the opportunity to see a Broadway show while visiting New York, Ellen's Stardust Diner is your next best bet. The wait staff of this 1950's themed eatery entertain guests with singing and dancing, and you never know what you might hear... some classics, some Gaga and definitely some show tunes. That waiter or waitress dancing on top of a table may just be Broadway's next big star! Members of the wait staff have gone on to perform on Broadway, London's West End and in regional and national tours in the states.
The food is a little pricey - but not outrageously - for what you are getting. However, you have to remember: 1. These are NYC prices. 2. These are Times Square prices. 3. You are paying for the atmosphere too. Some of the dishes are large portions, which could possibly be shared to cut costs. However, all the food looked delicious, and for dinner and a show the prices are worth it. My friends and I really enjoyed our Caesar Salad, Keish and grilled cheese sandwiches. The menu also features burgers, other salads and sandwiches, ice cream, milkshakes and homemade sangria.
As your waitress belts out Wicked's "Defying Gravity", she obviously is not taking your order or checking on your table. Therefore, the service is slow and somewhat unattentive, so I suggest you be prepared to order when your server is free and enjoy the show!
Busboys and Poets - Washington
2021 14th St. NW, Washington, DC, 20009 Washington
11-05-2010
Located at the corner of 14th and V streets, Busboys and Poets is in the heart of the U Street corridor. It includes a small bookstore, cafe with easy access to electrical outlets to plug in your computer, a restaurant with a full menu and a full bar. Named after poet Langston Hughes who was once a busboy in DC, the establishment also hosts poety readings, including a weekly open mic every Tuesday night.
The menu features salads, sandwiches and paninis, pizza, burgers and other entrees, and from what I've tasted, it's all really good. Plus, everything is reasonably priced. The pomegranate lemonade cocktail is a light, refreshing beverage during DC's hot spring and summer months.
The atmosphere is laidback. The rooms are open, airy and decorated with contemporary artists' work. The location and large glass windows also provide great opportunities for people watching, and in the U Street corridor, you never know what you might see!
Newseum - Washington
555 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, Washington, DC, 20001 Washington

(atualizado em 30-03-2010)
As a journalist, I may be a bit biased, but even when I try to keep my objectivity in check, I still think this is one of the most interesting and interactive museums I've visited. The museum displays a front page from every U.S. state that day, and each front page of major newspapers around the country and the world are archived on the museum's Web site. The museum has an interesting timeline in the Internet, TV and Radio gallery that shows the changes and advances in technology and reporting, along with major events that have shaped the industry. There is a touching video about covering the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Visitors can make their own broadcast news video and view the largest collection of pulitzer prize-winning photographs. The museum also hosts TV and radio shows like broadcast journalist George Stephanopoulos's live broadcast with Barack Obama. There is so much to see and do here. Set aside 2-3 hours to get through the museum. If you are a news junkie, you may want to set aside a day to really explore all that this museum has to offer. There also are spectacular views of the Capitol building from the upper levels of the Newseum. Tickets for the museum cost about $20 for adults, about $18 for senior citizens, college students with ID and US military with ID, and about $13 for ages 7-18. Children age 6 and younger get in free. While there are many museums in DC and many of which are free, this one is still worth a visit and worth its ticket price.
