Hobart Aquatic Centre - Hobart

Davies Ave 1, 7000 Hobart

05-01-2009

This also includes a gym & aerobics sessions, cafe, diving pool, 50m competition pool and 25m leisure pool and the have a creche.
The facilities are quite good and clean, I swim here regularly but haven’t used the gym. Staff are friendly and helpful but this place can get pretty overcrowded, particularly on summer weekends and weekday school groups during term. The other times to avoid are when comps are on - this is the only competition pool in the state that I know of.
Best times for quiet laps are early morning (before 8am) or after 6pm weekdays and from 7am and after 4pm weekends/public holidays. AU$5.50 for an adult casual swim.

Adelaide Festival Centred - Adelaide

King William Road, 5000 Adelaide

02-01-2009

Although not the architectural wonder that the Sydney Opera House is, Adelaide Festival Centre is still a wonderfully pleasing space and a 'must see’ for any first-time visitor to the 'City of Churches’.
The interior is home to opera, theatre, classical and contemporary music concerts and also the focal point to the biennial Adelaide Festival of the Arts as well as the annual Guitar Festival, OzAsia Festival and Cabaret Festival.
Outside is wonderful too, with markets on weekends, a reasonably priced cafe, public art and delightful picnic areas down through Elder Park and the Torrens River. I recommend a walk around (and across) the main building, taking in the views across the river to the north and to the CBD to the south.

Macfie Music - Hobart

Elizabeth St 173, Hobart

02-01-2009

Not the cheapest music store - go online for cheap instruments - but certainly one of the better ones in Hobart for service and assistance, particularly if you’re into acoustic instruments. Apart from guitars they stock a good range of string & brass instruments as well as accessories, sheet music, tutors and theory books.
I bought my Seagull acoustic there and got what I felt was a good deal.

Island Cafe - Hobart

Elizabeth St 171, 7000 Hobart

02-01-2009

The best coffee in Hobart, but also great service and excellent light meals. I recommend the nachos or toasted foccacias, particularly the Bliss.
My favourite place to meet friends for a relaxed lunch or have a coffee on the way home.

Sakura - Hobart

Liverpool St 77, 7000 Hobart

01-01-2009

Another asian cafeteria-style eatery with the kitchen on full view so you know it’s fresh. A good place for lunch or early dinner right in the heart of Hobart. Be warned they close at 9pm but sushi is all you can eat for AU$15 after 5pm.
Lunchtime this place is very busy with office workers and it can be hard to get a table. It’s worth waiting though - the servings are very generous and average about AU$12 per meal. Good value!
Service is not wonderful but the guy who makes the sushi is really friendly and it’s very good!

Saigon Kitchen - Hobart

Elizabeth St 335, North Hobart, 7000 Hobart

01-01-2009

Nothing fancy here, laminated kitchen-style tables and a bain marie of westernised asian-style food. And there’s plenty of it too!
While serving sizes aren’t overly generous, a choice of rice or noodles with each plate means it’s certainly filling and excellent value for money compared to so much on the North Hobart strip. It appears to be a family business and the service is always good.
Recommended for travellers, students and those of us who are want to eat out without paying heaps.

Ellison Hawker Bookshop - Hobart

Liverpool St 92, 7000 Hobart

01-01-2009

This bookshop is hard to beat. Not only do they have the usual range of new releases but have possibly the best selection of sci fi, fantasy, horror, crime and cult fiction in Hobart.
The staff are simply wonderful, nothing is too much bother. I wanted to source a special Vertigo release from the states as a Christmas present recently and the service was excellent. They didn’t charge above the online price I found in the US and even contacted me when it arrived - a day earlier than they estimated.
They also have occasional author readings/signings. Last year I met Neil Gaiman because this bookshop hosted him - they’re the best!

Lark Distillery - Hobart

Davey St 14, Hobart, 7000 Hobart

31-12-2008

For locals and visitors alike, if you enjoy a wee dram occasionally you’re bound to enjoy this little bar! As a musician, I’ve played here more than I’ve just gone for a drink but even so, it’s fun. This place isn’t cheap but I think it’s worth it for something special.
The bar staff are excellent and service is top notch here. They do serve real coffee and locally made liqueur chocolates which is great if you have to drive but I’d suggest walking or catching a cab. They stock a wide selection of boutique beers but I recommend going straight for the Lark Bush Liqueur made with Tasmanian Mountain Pepper (Tasmania lanceolata for any plant nuts out there). Alone or over a little ice, it’s a piece of Tasmania you won’t forget in a hurry!
If you don’t live in Hobart don’t despair, they have an online shop.

Coffee Plus - Hobart

Centrepoint Arcade Shop 309, Murray St, 7000 Hobart

31-12-2008

This is not a place to grab a quick latte at lunchtime - it’s not a cafe - but it is THE place to buy all the things to make the best coffee and tea at home if you live in Tasmania.
The two women who own the business are friendly and helpful and besides roasting beans (which smells wonderful as you wander through Centrepoint) they have all the accoutrements that make a good cuppa great…. cups, pots, syrups, chocolates plus loose & pre-packaged teas from all over the world.
Personal favourites are Yunan tea, Lady Grey tea, French Earl Grey tea (more floral than ordinary Earl Grey) and pretty much any of the flavoured coffee but esp Cinnamon Frangleico and Chocolate Raspberry Cream.

Pane Cucina - Hobart

Elizabeth St 366, North Hobart, 7000 Hobart

30-12-2008

'Style over substance’ is the term that comes to mind when reviewing this North Hobart bakery, which in days gone by was so very good.
The coffee is nothing special (usually lukewarm or cold), the cakes are ridiculously overpriced for what you get and the service is mediocre at best. Even the bread is a poor second to Banjo’s (It might be a franchise bakery but they make the best Pasta Dura loaf in town!)
Considering what’s on offer elsewhere around Hobart this is very poor fare. Disappointing!
