williamson's tavern - City of London

1 Groveland Court, London EC4M 9EH

15-01-2008

We hunted out this pub because my friend's surnamed Williamson - and discovered it was located down a quaint alley way, "the best kinds of pubs are down scary little alleys" - my friend claimed. It's near Manor House and St. Paul's. The pub is lively, spacious, has a great atmosphere. Their ale is famous, and they serve delicious hot food. There's outdoor seating as well. The crowd is usually professionals.

Lucas Arms - Bloomsbury

245A Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8QY

15-01-2008

A traditional English pub serving beer at cheap prices. The pub is moderately busy, cosy, and relaxing except when there's a football game. The crowd is a mix of locals, students and professionals.

cafe plaka - Kings Cross

315 Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8PX

15-01-2008

A little family-run cafe serving hot lunches as well as sandwiches, snacks and coffee. Prices are reasonable for its convenient location near King's Cross Station. I believe the hot food served is Polish.

Bread & Butter - Bloomsbury

100 Judd Street, London WC1H 9NT

15-01-2008

A friendly internet cafe with around 20 computers, just steps away from King's Cross/ St. Pancras station. £1/hour, which is a standard and fairly cheap rate. They open late on most days (until around 8-9pm weeknights). The cafe serves coffee, breakfast, and ciabatta sandwiches. It's never overcrowded, which makes it a decent place to serve the net. Travellers from nearby hostels often come here.

Marchmont Bookshop - Bloomsbury

39 Burton Street, London WC1H 9AL

15-01-2008

A little bookshop, filled with used books in all subjects. They always have a large range of travel books, somewhat dusty and outdated, but still fascinating for those possessed with wanderlust. There's also a good stock of classics and foreign titles, and the bookseller is eager to help you sift through his cardboard boxes.

Metropolitan Books - Clerkenwell

49 Exmouth Market, London EC1R 4QL

15-01-2008

Metropolitan Books at Exmouth Market is a small independent bookshop. The friendly staff LOVE books, and are very knowledgeable and helpful. They're full or reading suggestions, familiar with new titles, and support new authors.

Pod - Clerkenwell

47 Exmouth Market, London EC1R 4QL

15-01-2008

A cute little florist boutique in Exmouth Market. They sell lots of plotted plants and exotic flowers. All are pleasantly arranged, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. A great place to find gifts!

coffee @ Tower Bridge - Londres

177 Tower Bridge Road, Tower Bridge Road, London SE1 2AW

15-01-2008

An independent cafe with funky decor (chalkboard signs, scribbled grafitti outside, comfy lounge chairs, signs that say “all americans must be accompanied by an adult”); this cafe is pretty quiet except during lunch hour. It’s a comfortable, relaxed place, but not as vibrant as its decor suggests, due to its location (near a business/industrial district of London Bridge.) They serve good coffee and sandwiches at decent prices.

sniff - Fitzrovia

1 great titchfield street, fitzrovia, London W1W 8AU

15-01-2008

Sniff sells hip, unique, internationally designed shoes just steps away from Oxford Circus. They sell mainly women's casual and fancy footwear. The prices are reasonable for an independent boutique.

Central School Of Ballet - Clerkenwell

10 Herbal Hill, London EC1R 5EG

I went to a weeknight, adult drop-in beginner's ballet class. It was extremely overcrowded. Although the instructor was warm and funny, the lack of space and individual attention made it a very difficult environment to learn. I think one would be better off learning to dance from taped exercises, than dropping in for a class - it was more like attending a lecture, than actually getting exercise and practice.

I peeked into the studios where the intermediate classes were held - the class sizes were smaller, and students seemed to be quite advanced.
