Radisson SAS Golden Sands Resort & Spa - Mellieha

Sorry-guess it just wasn’t my idea of a FIRST class hotel.Yes rooms are spacious and the communal rooms were sumptuously decorated BUT if I wanted to visit somewhere secluded and let’s face it pretty isolated from the country it is situated in I could have stayed in England and saved the airfare to spend on central heating! This hotel could have been anywhere on the planet-it’s corporate, cold and had as much to do with a holiday in Malta as The Tower of London in the Lake District.
Yes the food was ok-didn’t eat much at the hotel to be fair - overpriced-and maybe “in season” when you could loaf around on the beach it would be alright.
There was a beach cafe about a hundred yards from the hotel where we ate once, but it suffered from having a captive audience and was nearly as expensive as the Radisson and we didn’t enjoy the meal we had at all.
There are some Fabulous restaurants on the island why on earth anyone would want to be cooped up here in the back of beyond with dismal transportation-NO transport from Valletta after dark and inflexible and expensive transport from Sliema and St. Julians which had to be booked a day in advance for some reason. Why?
Maybe the other Radisson in St.George’s would have been better but it is still just another Radisson hotel at the end of the day and at between 115 and 145 euros per night I would much rather stay somewhere else!
Lack of basic information-ie what should there be in your room? Can you smoke anywhere? All available if you ask but it’s supposed to be a 5* hotel.I shouldn’t have to ask.
Staff are friendly enough-it just didn’t feel comfortable.

Wow!Just driving past and this restaurant caught the eye.Currently decorated for Xmas( it being that time of year) it looked warm and VERY inviting. The decorations are quite understated and go perfectly with the normal decor.Lighting is bright enough to see what is on your plate but nicely dimmed to give an intimate atmosphere.Service was attentive without being obtrusive and in addition to their innovative and interesting menu there were 5/6 “specials” which were all very tempting.Only visited once but intended to return-should have eaten here EVERY night.Food was nicely presented and BEAUtifully cooked.
My partner’s rack of lamb from the specials menu was truly to die for-succulently moist and just the right shade of pink, with EXACTLY the right amount of seasoning.
My own choice-also off the specials menu was a local fish-Lampuki-again perfectly presented and cooked, and tasting similar to a very good (and increasingly rare) brown trout.
Prices are similar to a decent rural restaurant in England-Malta is not cheap, despite what they tell you-both these dishes cost around 18 euros which at the time of eating was about 85p.so around £15.30, but the lamb in particular was well worth the cost.
Possibly hard to find-signage in Malta is deplorable-this excellent restaurant could easily be missed. It is on the apex of a corner, by Mistra bay on the main road to Mellieha.GO FIND!

Over-priced,over-rated and underwhelming.
Went there when it was fairly new.You had to queue for ages to get a table. It was buzzing then. The burgers were aMAZING.They were all made to order from fresh minced steak and cooked to spec.ie.rare/medium/well done etc.And delicious. They were also huge.Had to leave the chips! No room!I have been several times since but not for a while and went there last week while on a trip to the metrolops. It was VERY dissappointing. The burgers were just like your average take-away burger-uninspiring,pretty tasteless, full of preservatives and probably mass produced frozen. There were no queues and the place was three quarters empty. In daylight it looked like your sitting room the morning after a party! Not at all impressed and definitely won’t be going there again.

Great-very innovative I thought(but thenI don’t live in London so don’t get out much!)Went there as part of a theatre package nd was very pleasantly surprised.NOT something I would have chosen for myself but would be more than happy to repeat the experience.Dishes for the theatre menu are restricted to a choice of 3 for all 3 courses so it wasn’t difficult to choose, and while the menu descriptions didn’t sound too appetizing for my taste the food itself was delicious.Yes the portions are small but we were quite full after our meal,so they were definitely adequate. And, the cocktail on special offer on the night of our visit-vodka and lychee juice with fresh strawberry.Yum yum.2 for the price of 1 or 1 1/2 -something like that.My partner doen’t drink so I had to drink both of them.Shame!!!!
