The Kitchin - Edimburgo

78 Commercial Quay, Edinburgh, Scotland EH6 6LX

15-11-2007 (atualizado em 19-11-2007)

How to find an adequate superlative for the Kitchin... the amount of awards Tom Kitchin has won over the past year does it all to be honest - youngest Scottish chef to ever win a Michelin star, Scottish chef of the year, restaurant of the year... all after being open for a mere few months. The word exceptional springs to mind.

Their tag-line is "From Nature to Plate", and my, in what fashion does it get there!

for instance, if you were to go for a starter, there's "seared hand dived Orkney scallops, served with endive tarte tatin and sweet Chateau de levant syrup". Everything seems to be locally produced, from wild mallard from the Glenalmond Estate, to Roast apples "from Moira's garden". So its ethical too. If none of the hundreds of top critics who've ever reviewed the place can find a negative, how on earth do you expect me to?!

As far as i'm concerned, there's no better place to eat in Scotland, the UK or perhaps even the whole world. And they're so frustratingly young, Tom and Michaela, and have so much energy, it just seems unreal.

While the pricing might be a little above some restaurants, and you might have to book well in advance, take it from me - you won't be disappointed.

Calton Hill - Edimburgo

Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 3BJ

18-11-2007

Why oh why does Carlton hill hide in the shadow of Arthur's Seat fame-wise? I've never understood. For me, the views from up here are just spectacular - of the crags, of the firth, of the castle, of princes street, everywhere.

Whether you're coming up for a romantic evening in front of the setting sun, for the fireworks or for a crazy fire festival, this is pretty much the first place i'd take someone visiting Edinburgh.

The best part of it is that you only need about five/ten minutes to walk here from the very centre of town, then back down for a cosy drink in a warm bar - there're plenty around!

partha You mean Calton Hill though, don't you? It is nice up there, especially for Beltane.

Studio 24 - Edimburgo

24-26 Calton Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 8DP

18-11-2007

Studio 24 has, i hear, got a reputation for being the place to be if you're into you're heavy death grunge hard-core mash-up metal. But if that's not your sort of thing, don't rule it off your map just yet.

I've personally never been to one of those nights (its partly just the whole dressing up the same in order to be different thing that i don't quite get), but i've rarely been disappointed with the nights i have ended up going to here. I think the trick is just to make it the kind of club you come to because there's a certain night on, rather than for it in itself.

Having said that, after its fairly recent revamp (and change of management?) the place has got a slightly new vibe compared to the grimey-cool berlin feel that it used to have.

All in all, definitely worth checking what's on here if ever you're looking for a night out - various from almost one extreme to the other.

Henderson's - Edimburgo

94 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 1DR

16-11-2007

I can't quite put my finger on it, but for some reason Henderson's remninds me somewhat of an up-market, old-fashioned tea room/cantine.

Having said that, the food is good quality (if not superb) and its a great place to go for lunch, whether you're vegetarian, vegan or pagan. Keep a check on the wallet, though, cause there's a tendency to get pricey here...

Jazz Bar - Edimburgo

1a Chambers Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1HR

16-11-2007

Well, for a comprehensive review, there doesn't seem to be much i could ever add to the one below. I just wanted to give some third party support to the argument, and add an extra star - i can't see how this place could ever not get five.

If you want a decent evening out, but you're not sure where to go, you're unlikely to be disappointed if you head to the jazz bar. While it does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin (so i wouldn't come here if you want a cheesy night of pop and r'n'b), i've seen some incredibly unbelievable talents performing here.

The sort of people that could quite easily have recording contracts and deals, if only they had the money and the contacts. Its seriously good live music without the price you'd pay elsewhere.

Bongo Club - Edimburgo

Moray House Holyrood Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 8BA

16-11-2007

In my opinion the Bongo Club has had possibly the most eclectic mix of different live music anywhere in Edinburgh in my four years of living here.

Its a good place to chill out during the day too, with internet and a cafe upstairs. Downstairs is the 400 capacity main room, complete with an excellent sound system, a large stage in the corner (big enough for a 10-piece band but not so big that it'll drown just a couple of performers) and a bar.

Its the sort of place, as i always say, that you go to for a specific night, rather than just popping down, so check out the website or a flyer first to se what's on.

Noor Takeaway - Edimburgo

56 South Clerk Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9PS

16-11-2007

Noor's food is genuinely genuine, and genuinely great. I just keep forgetting that the portions are quite so enormous, so my girlfriend and i still seem to order two of the menu deal, where one would probably feed the five thousand.

Their deliveries are generally swift too, so no need to order before you're even hungry, like so many places. I recomend most of the menu, but the last thing i ate was the saag aloo - honestly out of this world. Or at least out of this continent...

noor On behalf of Noor Management, I would like to thank you for your positive feedback. We always endeavor to raise our standards even further and your feedback is the key in achieving this. Please do not hesitate to raise any concerns or make suggestions via info@noortakeaway.co.uk.
Best Regards
Noor Takeaway

The Bike Station - Edimburgo

250 Causewayside, Edinburgh, Scotland EH9 1UU

16-11-2007

Must be one of the most talked-about second-hand bike places in the country. Not exactly a shop though - just plenty of bits and bobs lying (or hanging) around, and a few guys wandering around trying to put together a bike out of the beautiful mess..!

On saturday mornings they have their famous bike auction where if you're lucky and you get there early enough you can often pick an incredible deal. After that they have a byob (bring-your-own-bike) session, where you can take your bike along, they provide you with tools, second-hand materials and equipment and away you go. great fun getting your hands dirty, and there's always someone around to give you a hand or a bit of advise (particularly if you're a girl on your own, it seems).

if you like bikes, you just have to head down at some point - its a great place.

Phoenix Bar - Edimburgo

46 Broughton Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 3SA

16-11-2007

what used to be a fairly traditional scottish pub has become, as with most of the street, cool with a capital k.

A good selection of beers though, and some decent malt whiskeys provide for a good evening every time. The food's better than average too. Worth a pop-in if you're in the area and don't fancy any of the horrible-looking places by the omni-centre...

Human Be-In - Edimburgo

2 West Crosscauseway, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9JP

16-11-2007

good menu, great coffee, cocktail of the week, huge glass windows - what more could you possibly want? the scent of sweets wafted through the bathrooms? done.

I used to be a booth-man myself, until recently when the lure of the giant windows has got me sitting beside them with my caffetiere and moliere.

The service might not always be as quick as say, a cheetah, but they've got free wi-fi and loads of newspapers, so as long as you're not in a rush, its an ace place to spend an hour or so over a yummy goat's cheese salad...
