Grays Antique Market - Mayfair
1-7 Davies Mews & 58 Davies Street, Mayfair, London W1K 5AB
18-11-2009
Went along here on a quest to find vintage handbags and jewellery and was very pleasantly surprised to find an excellent range of items and at very competitive prices. Prices on similar fashion items were in fact cheaper than many equivalents at Alfie's.
The place is huge and there's something for everyone from antiquities to modernism.
The Prince Of Wales - Elephant and Castle

Stopped in here on our way to the Imperial War Museum. The sandwich board out the front advertising gluten-free food decided it!
It's a local pub (for local people, heh) which gets the odd lot of non-locals like us dropping in on their trip to or from the IWM, according to the landlord, who was a very nice character. There are two rooms, both with a bar and sit-down tables, and the front one with a pool table. The place looks like someone tried to turn it into a disco or wine bar in the late 70s and more recent owners have tried to revert it back to a more traditional pub. The music was heavy on the old-school country and western, 70s pop-rock like Elikie Brooks, Irish bands, and Elvis Presley.
Apparently the landlord's wife is gluten and lactose intolerant, and so they offer a proper gluten and dairy-free menu, and understand about avoiding cross-contamination, unlike many places where you take your chances with breadcrumbs getting in your food in the kitchen. I ordered a gluten-free burger and my boyfriend ordered gluten-free bangers and mash (with gluten-free gravy). The portions were large, fresh and tasty, and the gluten-free bun wrapped around my burger was actually fairly nice.
Didn't really look at what ales they had on tap, since we can't drink any anyway, but they had Bulmers pear cider, Magners, and Strongbow ciders.
So it's not the flashest place in town, but quiet locals, a pleasant landlord, and good gluten-free pub food makes it a much better place than most.
O'Neill's - Bloomsbury

Handy for meeting people near King's Cross but otherwise unremarkable Irish themed pub.
We sat in the dimly-lit upstairs bar, where the one bartender and one waitress dealt quite quickly and good-naturedly with the large crowd - rating stars just for them.
The menu is like pretty much anywhere, we had wedges and chicken wings, which were pretty tasty but not spectacular.
Wahaca - Covent Garden

Basically a Wagamama-style Mexican restaurant.
We got there at a little after 12, so it wasn't very busy and we were seated immediately. It was much busier by the time we left and people were waiting a minute or two to be seated.
Unlike the previous reviewer, we had fast and clueful waitress who was able to tell us immediately which dishes were gluten-free. Starter drinks were brought nearly immediately and even as the place filled up we never had to wait long for refills.
Our food also arrived quickly and was quite fresh and tasty. It's definitely not oily Tex-Mex. We got a couple of the street-food dishes each plus a side salad, and that was plenty of food for us. The little dishes of red and green salsa they brought us were delicious and allowed you to add extra heat to your dishes if you wanted.
Total came to £44 for three people including several alcohol and non-alcohol drinks each. We were quite happy with the whole experience and value and it is nice to find somewhere where much of the menu is gluten-free.
Nina's Hair Parlour - St. Johns Wood
13 Church St, (1st Floor, Alfie's Antique Market), London NW8 8DT

Outstanding! Nina's Parlour does all kinds of vintage and retro hair, from Victorian curls to 80s frosted shaggy dos. Their specialty era appears to be 40s-60s though.
Located at Alfie's Antiques market, the entrance is actually separate. Upstairs, there's a lovely retro styled hair parlour with lots of decor to get you in that vintage mood.
I had my hair done by Leila, and she knew exactly what kind of hairstyle I meant when I described what I wanted. No other stylist has gotten it right, they all seem to want to add modern touches or don't understand how vintage hairstyles work. Not so here! My hair was expertly shaped into layers just right for old-school curling, and my fringe was turned into a perfect Bettie Page style.
Worth every penny, and highly recommended. I'll be back every time I'm in London!
American Retro - Soho

Nice quality mix of designer items and interesting novelty gifts. It's a small shop but the range is great, and there are still plenty of nice things you can get for £5 or under.
The selection of books was interesting - design, fashion, photography and street art. They also stock a small selection of lo-fi photography bits like Lomo and Holga.
The staff were nice and friendly too!
Stables Market Camden - Camden
Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8AH

Never had the good fortune to go here before it was rebuilt, but ended up here on a bleak midweek day, so only the most determined shoppers and tourists were out.
Seemed to be a mix of touristy shops selling a mix of UK souvenirs and vaguely "alternative" t-shirts and accessories, Indian and Moroccan shops, gothic, rockabilly and raver shops, and a few independent designers or handmade goods stalls, mixed with some vintage shops. The vintage shops had reasonable quality items but mostly a bit overpriced except for one shop near the baked potato stand (which had apparently opened only relatively recently).
The many food stalls smelled nice but about the only one I could find that had gluten-free certainty was that baked potato stand, so a potato is what I had. And it was quite nice. You could probably get nearly a whole meal out of the free tastes all the (slightly annoyingly touting) food sellers kept offering.
Nam - Soho

I love a good pho. A perfectly spiced broth, soft noodles, assorted vegetables, the chili, mint or basil, and lemon. It's a miniature production that is hard to get wrong.
So after a hard morning's shopping in Soho, the sight of a pho cafe beckoned enticingly. Nam has cafeteria-style communal bench seating with sriracha chili sauce and fish sauce on the tables, or you can get take-away. I perused the fridge cabinet, which had Vietnamese soft drinks, water, and teas as well as little styrofoam trays with the sprouts, basil, chili and lemon for the soups. I ordered chicken pho, and ignored the rice paper rolls and everything else, because I REALLY wanted a pho by then.
It arrived quickly, and the serving was of moderate size - a bit smaller than the massive bowls you tend to get in Australia. The chicken was pre-cooked and sliced breast meat, rather than poached, but it wasn't bad. The broth was quite tasty, not overly salty, but lacked a certain something; the noodles a bit soft from overcooking or soaking; and there was enough fresh red onion and green bits. There didn't seem to really be enough sprouts/chili/basil however, which was a bit disappointing. I had to add a lot of sriracha to get the level of heat I like, pho usually tastes much nicer if it's from fresh chili rather than sauce.
I slurped it all down, but wasn't 100% satisfied like you should be after a good pho. This was a 75% pho. It will be interesting to taste the beef soup next time I'm there.
Verve Cafe Bar - Canberra
Franklin St, Manuka, 2603 Canberra
02-06-2009
Busy, popular cafe-bar in the trendy Manuka area. It’s not snobby, however, and its food is tasty standard Australian-Asian-Italian fare - not too pretentious and usually worth the Manuka prices. The menu is full of things like Thai beef salad, calamari rings, pork belly, steak burgers, with seasonal blackboard specials. They also do a popular hearty breakfast, eggs perfectly done every time I’ve been there.
Vegetarian and gluten-free options are clearly marked on the menu, and they serve Deeks bread, the best gluten-free bread in town, not that nasty styrofoam-like stuff you find in supermarkets.
The coffee might take a while to arrive, but the barista likes to take his time and get it right - and it’s some of Canberra’s best coffee.
The cocktail list is quality over quantity. You can order classics, or try the inventive (but not silly) house cocktails, which change now and then.
You can also book for large groups and arrange banquets.
Sometimes the service is a little harried, but always polite and accommodating of special dietary needs. The only real drawback is that the inside gets rather noisy as there’s lots of bare walls and wood floors. There are a few sofas and an open fire in winter to relax with a hot coffee or cocktail, which is a nice touch.
La Rustica - Canberra
Kennedy St 35, Kingston, 2604 Canberra
02-06-2009
A wonderful southern Italian style trattoria. Walk in and smell the delicious scents wafting from the kitchen! La Rustica is nearly always full of happy diners, ranging from couples, business dinners, families, and big groups, all with that blissful look on their face that says “This is really great food.”
It’s not overly fancy, it just provides hearty delicious Italian cuisine. The made-on-the-premises gnocchi baked with mozzarella on top is one of my favourites. The ravioli is also handmade. They also do very good pizza. It’s not wood-fired but it’s still better than a lot of wood-fired ovens produce. As well as pizza and pasta, there’s plenty of antipasto, seafood, salads, and steak, veal and chicken mains. The bar has a good variety of beers, wine and spirits although you may BYO wine.
It’s also a great place for groups as it does banquets (12 people minimum). There is outdoor seating, with heaters in winter.
The service is usually good despite the crowd. Highly recommended!
