i Borboni seems to be run by three Neapolitan friends. The boss wasn't there, but passion for the new premises and the dishes they serve was there aplenty.

There's a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from the team.

I was pleased to see a nice short menu since I'm very much in favour of short menus that deliver rather than laundry list length ones that lead to indistinguishable offerings.

A few questions about the food elicited passionate explanations and an exhortation to try their 'very neaplotian' dish of the day, Pasta Patata. One of the team beckoned me over to the counter and proudly displayed his freshly made potato croquettes.

We both went for pasta dishes. Between us we had the pasta patata and linguine carbonara. Both were well executed dishes which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Carbonara can be massacred in the UK and this was clearly a dish that knew where it came from and delivered on taste. This is proper pasta.

Verdict: Promising start. We'll be going back. Try it.

A surprisingly competent Vietnamese from my toe in the water last week. A decent bowl of Pho and a competent crispy pancake.

Most guests were Vietnamese.

I need to eat a full meal before offering a final verdict, but a cautious thumbs up.
