Hôtel de Mougins - Mougins

205 Avenue Golf, 06250 Mougins

02-04-2008

This hotel is outside the historic centre of Mougins, and although the hotel entrance is off a main road (which leads to Sophia Antipolis - the Silicon Valley of Europe) it is very quiet.
The hotel itself is very nice and picturesque. There is a small but cosy lounge, with elegant French interior design, with a bar and fireplace. There is also a restaurant (later) and a beautiful open courtyard with a swimming pool, beautiful lawns and tables where one can have meals there as well (I would advise breakfast when in-season).
The rooms themselves follow the same design philosophy of the hotel - they are very comfortable, spacious and elegant.

During my last visit (always corporate), I went to the restaurant, which is quite expensive (25€ for starters, 35 for main courses, 15 for desserts). The food was quite good, but I would have two complaints - first of all, the menu is very limited (there were 4 -5 starters, 4 - 5 main courses, 4 - 5 desserts) on the evening I ate, there was no beef (i had the choice between lamb, fish or pigeon!!). Secondly the “garcons” tend to be quite young, inexperienced and maybe also lacking some professionality.

Apart from one night in February (where the heating was turned off) and two nights in April (where there were some ants in everyone’s rooms) I would recommend this hotel for corporate visits, as it really is quite beautiful (and American clients really enjoy it!). With better service, no ants and heating, I would have given this place a 5 star review.

The Ruby - Cheltenham

52 Suffolk Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL50 2AQ

20-03-2008 (atualizado em 02-04-2008)

(Apparently) listed as the 4th best cantonese restaurant in England in 2000 and something, does not surprise me. I have been eating Chinese food since 1990, in Soho, all over Europe and this restaurant here remains my firm favourite.
The place itself is nothing spectacular - but it is quite sophisticated, quite elegant, quiet and (probably due to its prices) one tends to find a well mannered clientelle.
Prices are in fact quite expensive (for Cheltenham) but in any case, I would seriously advise it. Also try the peking duck with pancakes, which is worth every £.
If you are planning to dine here on friday or saturday - book in advance.

Le Mas Candille - Mougins

Bd Clement Rebuffel, 06250 Mougins

02-04-2008

Between Cannes and Grasse, Le Mas Candille is a five-star luxury hotel with a gourmet restaurant in Mougins, on the Cote d’Azur.
This is an incredibly beautiful restaurant, with a great view.
As expected from any place which costs 100€ per person (not including beverages) the food, service, surroundings are exactly what you pay for.
If you are planning to treat someone, or maybe even ask them to marry you, take them here!

balti walla - Cheltenham

143 Bath Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL53 7LT

20-03-2008

Balti walla is surely one of Cheltenham’s best curry houses (and there is a fierce competition in Cheltenham for the indian cuisine business). Not much to say apart from it’s exactly what you want from a curry house - superb food, good corteous service, good quality: price ratio and a good mix of people, ranging from the public school kids from the College nearby, to the typical slice of Cheltenham society.
Well worth it.

O-ma.ca.sé - Milão

Via San Fermo della Battaglia 1, 20121 Milano

18-03-2008

A great and relatively new japanese restaurant just off Via Moscova, and about a 5 min walk from Brera. There are about 20 tables, with an interior which is quite new and typical of Japanese restaurants.
The price quality ratio is pretty good - in other words the quality is pretty good, and the prices are quite cheap (considering it’s Japanese).
I have been eating Japanese for over ten years, but would say a distinguishing factor in this place is a plate called Bera Chirashi - its like a flat cake of rice, with a load of raw fish on top (salmon, tuna etc)... almost like a load of salmon, tuna, and prawn sushis all packed together! I might not make it sound appetising, but trust me, it’s great. Lunchtime menu is great - you get this Bera Chirashi plus salad/miso soup plus water/tea for 15€.
Also a great place for beginners of Japanese cuisine.

Panino Giusto - Milão

Corso Garibaldi 125, Milano

18-03-2008

Panino giusto is a chain of restaurants (also takeaway) which is popular, mainly for its paninis (sandwiches).
The restaurants themselves tend to follow the sames format - it’s quite comfortable inside, with a quite a good atmosphere. The service tends to be rushed and definately not the best I’ve come across. There is a mainly young crowd. Finally it’s a good place to eat if you wish to eat outside 12-2 and 7-12 window, as it’s open all day and offers good variety compared to any other bar open at this time.
Now for the food - the paninis themselves are very good - good variety, bread is lightly toasted, and the ingredients are always fresh and the portion itself may leave you slightly hungry (they do range from 5-7 €).
There are also starters (typical italian plates) aswell as good salads and desserts (should definately try the hot chocolate cake with melter middle). Do not come here if you want to get “wasted” on beer as it is expensive and only served by the bottle (about 4€) - infact I once saw two scots disgusted with the price of beer and left.

All in all, a good place to have a snack, or eat a meal, in an informal and easy atmosphere.

Ristorante Peppino - Milão

Via Durini 7, 20122 Milano

18-03-2008

One of the most famous restaurants in Milan, especially for being a good and expensive place (I have been there a couple of times, but always invited)! There are around 30 tables, service is good, corteous and professional and crowd is generally elegant and not “young”.
Try the truffle pasta/ rice - it’s about 40€ a plate, but always a sure bet.

Spazio Fitzcarraldo - Milão

viale a. filippetti 41, Milano

18-03-2008

Great bar just off Porta Romana, with nice cars always parked outsides. It is basically an impressively huge basement, and also quite beatufiul, with nice furniture and good music
Atmoshpere is great and the crowd is generally elegant, good looking starting from mid 20s to late 30s. I would advise people to come here for the “aperitivo” which starts around 18h00.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - Milão

Piazza del Duomo, 20121 Milano

18-03-2008

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is right in the heart of milan, where one main exit comes out to the Piazza Duomo (the square where the Duomo cathedral is situated) and Piazza della Scala (where the famous Scala theatre is situated). With shops such as Louis Vuitton and other top design brands, typical prices are expensive. There is also one of the most expensive hotels in Europe situated herein.

10 Corso Como - Milão

Corso Como 10, 20154 Milano

18-03-2008

I have only been to the bar/ restaurant, although I have heard that there is also a design store (probably not open late at night)!.
This bar is right in the middle of one of the hotspots of Milan nightlife. However what really distinguishes this place is two things -
1. It is full of plants everywhere, almost making it feel like you’re having a drink in the garden
2. Part of the garden area is covered by a type of transparent plastic tent, which is classified as outdoors, meaning one can smoke here (smoking is illegal in public places in Italy). It is also warmed up during the winter.

Atmosphere is good, expect the usual goodlooking and fashionable crowd of Milan.

Service is ok, but drinks are quite expensive, although the general area is expensive.

Overall a novel and nice place to have a drink in the centre of Milan’s nightlife.
