KRO2 - Manchester
Unit 13 Oxford Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 7ED
04-12-2007
Kro 2 is one of a number of the Kro chain bars which are situated across Manchester.
Despite this trendy bar being in the heart of student-ville, Kro 2 is also popular among young professionals and and is based in what looks like a massive glass shoe-box! However, it's the outside which I think is best.
On a lazy Summer evening, this Kro is one of the most fun places to be in Manchester. Right beside this glass box is a heated outdoor area that stays buzzing until the early hours and is unlike anything else in the city.
I've lost many an hour sitting reading, chatting to friends and supping a budvar on those outdoor benches.
As it is situated by the BBC on Oxford Road, it's also not unusual to see some minor celebrities hanging around but don't let that deter you!
Finally, Kro has a fantastic array of drinks, reasonably priced tasty food and the bar staff are friendly and not "too cool for school"!
All in all a nice place!
Font Bars - Liverpool
Arrad St Development Arrad Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L1 9BH
04-12-2007
The Font is one of those bars which you like from the moment you enter through those front doors.
The decor may be naff, but it's well located by the university, it serves cheap beer and food and shows the latest football matches. A winning combination by any student's standards.
However, in my time in Liverpool, the Font's main pulling power centered around the fact that it had a playstation 2, a massive projector screen and a copy of Pro Evolution Soccer. This is quite a mix when you take all the young make students into account and needless to say the pub was VERY POPULAR.
The Font won't change your life and is a bit naff, but it's a great place for a chilled out daytime drink. However, after about 8pm, it gets really busy and the place loses some of its attraction when you're fighting to get to the bar!
The Cambridge - Liverpool
5-7 Mulberry Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L7 7EE
04-12-2007
The Cambridge is a well-known haunt among students from the University and nowhere else is it possible to get such cheap and chewy pizzas between lectures!
It's a cramped little bar, but it's packed to the rafters with students, lecturers, tutors and various other interesting characters.
It may not be the smartest looking pub, but it's situated just off the gorgeous Abercromby Square and, in summer, has a load of benches outside where you can sup a fine ale (or a Carling) and watch the world go by.
Don't go here expecting a quality night out. Do go here if you want to have a cheaky pint after lectures/work/hard day!
Oh, be prepared to lose a lot of money on the quiz machine!
The Camel Club - Liverpool
18-22 Wood Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L1 4AQ
04-12-2007
For those who don’t know of its delights, it is easy to walk past Camel Club and miss it. However, to do so would be a crime, as hidden away up a staircase, this club is an oasis of r 'n’ b, hip hop and pop tunes!
Camel is a real hit with the student crowd and offers a good selection of cheap bottled drinks that are lapped up by the enthusiastic scholars! There are a few egos on display on the dancefloor, but on a whole the place is a pretty good venue for a fun night out!
Based over two levels, the bottom floor is decorated like a Moroccan cave and upstairs is more of a quiet chill-out area for those who want to escape the sweaty dancefloor.
The best night has to be Monday, but get there early as it gets VERY busy!
The Albert - Aigburth
66-68 Lark Lane, Aigburth, Liverpool, Merseyside L17 8UU
03-12-2007
The Albert is one of Liverpool's traditional pubs that, despite crumbling at the edges, is just utterly spell-binding.
Its clean white exterior hints at better days, but inside the atmosphere is absolutely top notch and you can guarantee that you'll be served a pint of real ale with a joke and a smile.
The Albert is based on Liverpool's bohemian Lark Lane and it really is the personification of this area. It may be slightly faded, but there is something unintentionally trendy about it and it's not uncommon to see locals and students chatting over a Cain's lager.
As well as serving food, the Albert is the perfect place to watch major sporting events on its many tvs...however, make sure you pop in to fully absorb the faded decor as it's an absolute treat!
This place wouldn't be out of place on Albert Square, but the humour and vibe is definitely scouse. The stuff of legends.
Voodou Hairdressers - Liverpool
98 Bold Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L1 4HY
03-12-2007
Voodou is the ultimate student hairdressing salon as it offers quality haircuts at reasonable (-ish) prices.
Much to my amusement, I've seen many a friend come out with zig-zag lines down the side of their head. However, I've never come out with anything more than a haircut that I'm extremely happy with.
The staff are really good fun and always up for a chat that doesn't always revolve about whether you're going out that night! There's a cool vibe around the whole place and you can tell the directors take a real pride in their work.
There are two different salons for men and women and both are extremely popular with students and trendy young professionals. It's advisable to book ahead rather than walk in off the street. This is apparently even more important for women!
They also sell a good selection of hair products such as wax, gel and shampoo.
My only criticism is that they play rubbish dance music in the background - perhaps because it's a stone's throw from the site of the old Cream nightclub?
Korova Corporation - Liverpool
Unit 202 The Vanilla Factor Fleet Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L1 4AR
03-12-2007
Korova is a truly unique bar in the centre of Liverpool. Set up by Liverpool band Ladytron, the whole establishment has a very trendy, Clockwork Orange, Videodrome feel to it! (In a good way!) You almost feel like you're sitting on the set of a 1970s punk rock music video!
The venue itself is wonderfully decorated with lots of colours and many antique TVs etc! It's almost a work of art in here.
Made up of a bar, restaurant and club, Korova is not merely aesthetic and serves great healthy foods such as quiche, salads and pasta. During the evenings you can get mexican food like Fajitas and I have to say, they're bloody good for a bar/restaurant!
The club downstairs regularly has live music and club nights and is full of trendy young things, dancing the night away to Joy Division, Talking Heads and their modern contemporaries.
I'd definitely recommend Korova, if only to see count the seemingly countless Debbie Harry lookalikes!
Big Hands - Manchester
296 Oxford Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M13 9NS
03-12-2007
Despite the dubious name, this has to be the perfect pre and post-gig drinking venue for the Manchester Academy. Unlike some of the more cheap student drinking-holes, Big Hands has big atmosphere at, unfortunately, relatively big prices!
Expense aside, this bar has a great vibe and a wide selection of bottled beers. It's also impeccably decorated and oozes trendiness with its deep reds, dark blacks and grungey greens all over the place!
It's the perfect setting to get all start-struck over the up-and-coming musicians who regularly frequent the bar after gigs.
Finally, the jukebox is very good and that, for me, is always the sign of a good bar!
Big Hands is well worth a pre-gig visit!
Manchester Academy 1 - Manchester
Oxford Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M13 9PL
03-12-2007
The Manchester Academy is one of a number of quality live-music venues around the city.
I've been here on a number of occasions and caught bands such as Bloc Party, Dashboard Confessional and Brand New. Everytime I was impressed by the cheap drinks, atmosphere and acoustics.
It's quite a large venue so the nearer you are to the back, the more chance you have of getting a good vantage point. It does get wuite hot and sweaty, but then what music venues don't?
Another good thing is that it's usually not too hard to get a ticket for gigs here. However it's often an idea to get them on the day of release if you're looking to see a popular band.
If you do miss out, there are no shortages of touts who roam outside, willing to part with their tickets for an inflated price. If you are willing to wait until the main band is about to start, you can sometimes get the tickets for less than face value from touts wanting to cut their losses!!
One of the best places to catch major touring bands, the Manchester Academy is not only a haven for students, but for music lovers alike!
Cornerhouse - Manchester
70 Oxford Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 5NH
03-12-2007
This is how cinemas should be! The Cornerhouse is a fine example of a traditional arthouse cinema still going strong! This is the place to come to to catch the best in independent, foreign and big budget movies.
I recently went to the Cornerhouse to watch the film "Control" (new film about Manchester's music heroes, Joy Division) and I can honestly say that the cinema's setting enhanced my enjoyment of the film! Granted, that may have something to do with the fact that the cinema is just down the road from the site of the old Hacienda nightclub, but the cinema itself just oozes Manchester class!
There's a good clientele who go to the Cornerhouse and you're never at a loss for some intelligent conversation in the queue for tickets! And, like FACT in Liverpool, the Cornerhouse is far more than just merely a cinema. It also offers a number of art galleries and a fantastic bar and shop.
The Cornerhouse is extremely well located on Oxford Street and is right beside Oxford Road station!
