Whitley Street Sub Post Office - Reading

17 Whitley Street, Reading, Berkshire RG2 0EG

29-01-2009 (atualizado em 04-03-2011)

This is my local post office and I come here because it is hardly ever busy.
The most people in the queue I have seen is five, and that was during the Christmas period with folks sending cards and presents.
This post office is run by an middle-aged Indian man who is a bit glum and stays shacked up in his office behind the counter window listening to the cricket on the radio.
There used to be a travel agency run from within the post office but it is no longer there.
Of course you can buy the usual products for your postal needs and also photocopy things.

rudenesswillnotbetolerated The man that runs that shop is a horrible excuse for a human being, how can you give his shop 5 out of 5 stars?

Country Homes & Gardens - Reading

Henley Road, Playhatch, Reading, Berkshire RG4 9RB

30-01-2009

This garden centre is located on the Henley road outside Caversham.
It has everything you would expect from a garden centre and more.
I buy my christmas tree here every year for example and they have a great selection of trees to chose from, and the staff are more than happy to pack the trees up for you.
What caught my eye was the pile of old oak railwy sleepers piled up in the carpark.
I needed one for a fireplace renovation I was doing and this was just the job – only cost £20 for 1.5 metres long and about 40 kilos of oak.

Butts News & Wine Store - Reading

107 Oxford Road, Reading, Berkshire RG1 7UD

30-01-2009

Butts news and wine store is conveniently located on the Oxford Road, next to the Music Man and opposite the central swimming pool. This store is always busy as its located in the middle of a residential area.
There is lots of food, alcoholic drinks and products for the home on sale here and the prices are competitive and comparable with other stores of this size.
You can buy indian food, polish food, chinese food, english food and simliar ranges of drinks too – good deals on wine and beer if bought in bulk.
They sell a good range of telephone cards for using from payboxes or from home phones.

The Pier - Basingstoke

Festival Place, Basingstoke, Hampshire RG21 7LJ

30-01-2009

One of the best shops around….no wait it was one of the best shops around.
The whole chain of Pier is now in administration and no longer selling its goods.
While it was trading it sold many lines of ethnic oriental, indian, and african furniture – from tables and chairs to sofas and dressers and bookcases and also soft furnishings like curtains, cushions, lamps, bed linen and the like. All their products were top quality and equal in build to certain big department stores and yet a lot cheaper.
They sold crockery and cutlery, and lots of scented candles. It is the memory of these smellly candles which will stick in my mind when I remember the Pier.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car UK - Reading

120 Oxford Road, Reading, Berkshire RG1 7NL

30-01-2009

I rented a van to move house from Enterprise van rentals on the oxford road in reading.
I could rent for half a day which was important for me and not all companies could offer this.
The company phoned me the day before saying that they had another customer who had double booked the vehicle I was due to rent.
They said that I could take the van but only for 2 hours. And only pay half the fee. I ended up paying £25 for the rental including insurance and was perfect time for my move, even if it was a bit rushed. Friendly staff in the store too.

The Bell - Waltham St. Lawrence

The Street, Reading, Berkshire RG10 0JJ

30-01-2009

Lovely really old traditional village pub located in the small village of Waltham St. Lawrence.
They have good bar food and very nice beer on tap. The choice of ales and bitters changes frequently and they are interesting and unusual brews.
There is seating outside – a few benches by the side of a square for when the weather permits.
I had a hot dog with nice sausage and fried onions and served with homemade ketchup and the bread was homemade too.
Simple cooking very well done seems to be their way. And it works a treat. If I want fancy nouveau cuisine I will go to a fancy modern restaurant.
When I go to a pub I want simple, homely nosh. Job done!

The Hobgoblin - Reading

2 Broad Street, Reading, Berkshire RG1 2BH

30-01-2009

The hob goblin pub on broad street in Reading is a little place with barely enough room to swing a cat.
They specialise in real ales and bitters and the clientele is predominantly male and middle aged.
The pub always seems busy whether it is lunchtime during the week or in the evenings. Since the smoking ban came into force there have been a great many people standing outside the pub on the highstreet with a beer in hand.
I do not really like this since there are shops nextdoor and an Early Learning Centre a few doors down so lots of kids walking around that area where people are drinking and smoking.

Pau Brasil - Reading

89 Mount Pleasant, Reading, Berkshire RG1 2TF

30-01-2009

Pau Brasil on Mount Pleasant in Reading is a Portuguese and Brazilian deli and grocery store.
They sell fresh meat, cheese, homemade cakes and biscuits.
They also have a large selection of packaged foods – tins, jars, packets of food.
The best part about this shop is the café on the first floor. They sell food to take away or eat in and I have had a nice meal here.
Portuguese chicken pie with string chips was delicious and there was nice Brazilian soft drinks and freshly made smoothies to wash it down with.
Their Acai berry smoothie is lovely and very healthy. Acai is a superfruit with lots of antioxidants.
The yellow and blue décor gives you a happy feeling when you step inside this great little shop.

Ashley Blooms - Caversham

40 Church Street, Caversham, Reading, Berkshire RG4 8AU

30-01-2009

Ashley Blooms is located just outside the entrance to the Oracle shopping centre on the side with Boots and Lush.
The shop itself is a small glass fronted studio type work shop.
It sells lovely bouquets and flower arrangements and has some really artistic creations on sale.
I have only bought flowers from there once as they are a little on the pricy side – perhaps due to being by the Oracle.
An arrangement of flowers and greenery costs from around £20.
The shop does wrap the flowers up nicely and for a special occasion it’ll make that special someone really happy.

Romans Letting Agents - Reading

33-34 Market Place, Reading, Berkshire RG1 2DE

30-01-2009

Romans is the largest and probably most well know estate agents in Reading.
They sell and offer rental properties. They are also involved with property auctions where you can pick up a bargain property if you know what you are looking for and have a lot of ready cash to hand.
I looked at several properties with Romans but found their prices could be bettered by some of the other agents around Reading.
Perhaps their sheer size is a sign of the profit they make.
I was overall quite impressed by their set-up, the office is large and modern and comfortable if you’re waiting there.
The agents are prompt ajnd punctual when coming to viewings.
