Curzon Soho - Soho

Shaftesbury Avenue, Soho, London W1D 5AY

23-01-2008 (atualizado em 16-04-2009)

One of my favorite cinemas, the Curzon has long been the bastion of independent films and film festivals alike.

my first experience with this gem of a picture house was back in 1999 watching High Art in a packed auditorium. Unlike Odeon’s and Vues this truly is a independent establishment that does not fuss itself with hot dogs and popcorn but rather focuses on non main stream films that have been forgotten by the bigger picture houses.

Ticket prices range from 8 pound upwards depending on the feature but look out in the press for special offers and membership.

One of the highlights for the Curzon is the London gay and Lesbian Film festival that hold many of there showing at the venue. Tickets can be booked on line, over the phone or at the box office, book ahead however as often films sale out quickly, especially for the G&L F F.

friendly society - Soho

79 Wardour Street (The Basement), Soho, London W1D 6QB

23-01-2008

The Friendly Society is an odd shaped bar hidden in the darkest corner of Soho. It was a good few years of this establishment being open before I even noticed it was there and that was only after I wa mixed bar with a good atmosphere and friendly bar staff who serve up an amazing Cosmopolitan.

The venue is small and on weekends can get quite busy, but don’t let that put you off, I’ve always been able to nab a table and there is always space to have a dance when your fav track comes on.

The music like the bar is very gay, and the Djs are normally happy to play requests as long as it fits in with the general theme of the night.

Typically for a Soho bar the drinks are a little pricey but no more then any other central London bar. A great place to have a few drinks after work to chill out or before a big night out.

Hamburger Union - Soho

22 Dean Street, Soho, London W1D 3RY

23-01-2008

Recently I was dragged to the Hamburger Union in Soho by a friend who promised a quality meal. to be honest I was somewhat skeptical, mainly do to the fact that I am a vegetarian and was not holding out for much hope of a juicy veggie burger to hit the spot.

Luckily I was pleasantly surprised with the results and left the restaurantsfeeling full and satisfied. I cant comment on the quality of the beef in the burgers and no doubt if your thinking of visiting this establishment then that’s what you want to here about, but I can tell you the veggie burger was top notch, with fresh lettuce and tomatoes and a lovely chutney sauce on the side.

The chips were chunky and well cooked, although the portion was small, they were filling non the less. I will definitely be visiting Hamburger Union again soon and would recommend you do the same.

A meal for one with soft drink comes to roughly 7 pound but is well worth it.

Amalfi - Soho

29-31 Old Compton street, Soho, London W1D 5JS

23-01-2008

I have two friend who for the past five years have always celebrated any special occasion by visiting Amalfi, with is pasta and pizza menu and rock bottom prices its easy to see why it appeals to students and people on a budget.

A very pleasant little restaurant its not necessarily a place I would take someone for an anniversary, but for a quick cheap mean in Soho its perfect. don’t expect ultra quick service with amazing tasting food, after all you get what you pay for but it is good quality for what your paying and the atmosphere is always buzzing.

The menu offers your Italia classics as well as a few old English choices such as a roast dinner with trimmings. A meal for two with drinks can be as little as 10 pounds, which is why this is a great little gem of a place in the middle of Soho.

Balans - Soho

60 Old Compton Street, Soho, London W1D 4UF

23-01-2008

Late night restaurants are normally a bit hit and miss and Balans is no different. Although the quality of the food is generally good and the decor is very pleasant, the prices are ridicules, at 5 pound for a single sausage it seems that they count on there customers being too drunk to realize the extortion going on.

Added to the silly prices is the same old story of the staff having rotten attitudes and not realizing that they are actually there to serve customers instead of posing being rude.

Im told that during the day it’s a different story, but to be honest after my early hours visit last year its put me off going again.

inspirationjunkie Absolutely spot on, the staff are very misogynistic and rude, and the food is really below par! Still at 5am with nowhere to go, Balans very often remains the best culinary alternative except for Bar Italia!

Rush Bar - Soho

25 Frith Street, Soho, London W1D 4TS

23-01-2008

Rush Bar is the best thing to happen to the lesbian community in years, for the simple reason it gives girls an alternative to the Candy bar. Admittedly it’s a little small on the ground floor and upstairs but there is plenty of room on the dance floor down stairs, and if your single and after a flirt and a snog then its down stairs that your want to be.

Rush Bar is relatively new to the lesbian scene but hopefully is here for good, and if like me you get a little wary of the same old faces at the Candy Bar then this is a great little place to visit and share a cocktail.

Drinks are Soho priced, so expect them to be dearer then your local, but the atmosphere is great and the music keeps you dancing till close.

Mr Topper's Haircuts - Soho

10 Moor Street, Soho, London W1D 5NE

23-01-2008

I sometimes get the feeling that im the only girl in town who visits Mr Toppers, but then maybe the fact that Mr is in title probably leads most to believe that its male only. In fact its unisex and a great place to get a hair cut for 6 pound.

Ive been having my hair trimmed here for a couple of years and although there is often a queue you don’t normally need to wait more then quarter of an hour before your seen.

Located just off Compton Street Mr Toppers is mainly staffed by pretty young Australian who like nothing better then a good chit chat. Although don’t get too comfortable, for 6 pound your hair cut is not likely to last more then ten minutes.

Obviously for if your after highlights and a blow dry then your not going to get it here, so stick to Tony & Guys. If however, you’re a girl after a quick cut with not too much fuss then Mr Toppers is perfect. If your guy, then you will probably be able to get most kinds of cuts here.

Bella Italia Shaftesbury Avenue - Soho

61-63 Shaftsbury Avenue, Soho, London W1D 6LQ

23-01-2008

Bella Italia is the Italian version of Sohos Tuk Tuk, and instead of low priced Thai food you have a choice of different pasta and pizzas. Not as tasty as Pizza Express, Bella Italia is still a good option if you fancy Italian food.

A meal for two with drinks should be no more the 25 pound and as long as your not expecting Gordon Ramsey quality food then you probably wont be disappointed. Depending on what day of the week you visit you may have to wait a little longer for your food to arrive so try to avoid Saturday nights as often the food tastes a little warm and reheated. Other then that I would recommend this a good choice for pasta lovers on a budget.

Patisserie Valerie - Soho

44 Old Compton Street, Soho, Soho, London W1D 5JX

23-01-2008

Patisserie Valerie Is arguably the best pastry establishment in London, and it only takes one visit for you to realize how its gained this reputation. Indeed Patisserie Valerie Is responsible for my sudden weight gain in the summer of 2001 when I worked across the street from this evil den of sugar. Not a lunch time would pass without me popping across the road to pick out a mini pizza or creamy scone to scoff down my throat.

Eventually I forced myself into going cold turkey but still till this day I cant walk down Compton Street without feeling the temptation to pop in and spoil not only myself but my figure. Please ignore my example of resistance and indulge your self in this fortress of sugar, cream and pure joy.

Masala Zone Restaurant - Soho

9 Marshall Street, Soho, London W1F 7ER

23-01-2008

Not only am I the worlds number one curry fan, but im the worlds number one curry critic, and given the slightest reason ill happily put to shame a curry if its not up to my standards. Once I even dared to complaine about a korma I had ordered in Goa, as I found it sour tasting. The chef was not impressed and I got the feeling I wouldn’t be welcomed back

The Masala Zone in Soho leaves me without complaint, and no matter how hard I try to find fault, I’m always left hushed. Every dish on the menu is mouth watering, the starters are gorgeous and the mains are divine. If your lucky enough to have any room in your tummy left then indulge in an Indian desert of coconut ice cream, probably the nicest thing to come out of Asia since silk.

A meal for two with drinks shouldn’t set you back more then 30 pound.
