Bonanza Coffee Heroes - Prenzlauer Berg
Oderberger Str. 35, Prenzlauer Berg, 10435 Berlin
10-05-2008
Perhaps the best coffee in all of Berlin, these guys are serious about their product and it shows. Right on the edge of Mauerpark, Bonanza is a pretty small and bare-bones operation, but the star here isn’t the cafe itself but the coffee. It’s hard to describe how good it is. Their selection is small, just a few hot and cold coffee choices, but the quality shines through and through. The milk is always so thick and sweet, I really wonder where it comes from. The coffee is roasted and brewed to perfection, never ever bitter but always just right. The prices are a little higher maybe than other coffee shops, but it is well worth it here. Highly recommended.
Wohnzimmer - Prenzlauer Berg
Lettestraße 6, Helmholtzplatz, 10437 Berlin

My favorite cafe in all Berlin, I think. Wohnzimmer just works. The inside is done up in old sofas and chairs and coffee tables, all mismatched furniture but all plush and charming. for me, the ambiance can’t be beat. The bar is right smack when you enter the place, almost always with some sort of daily treat on display, like teas with fresh herbs or little cookies or whatever. A good cup of coffee and a slice of bio cake makes for a great afternoon, only for under €5.
....But what really makes this place special for me is the breakfast. My favorite is the großes Käse Frühstück. Good for two people, its a giant plate filled with lovely cheeses, fresh veggies and fruit, some spreads, and a little sweet treat for dessert. The bread is fresh and tasty that comes with it. Also included is a glass of orange juice. For €5? I’d call that a good deal. They also have lots of other choices--a combo coffee and bio croissant tray, herb toasts, müsli, and more.
Lately I’ve been getting my breakfast with not just a big ol’ coffee but also their Bionade Schwipp, a big glass of red bionade, sekt, strawberries, and fresh mint. Very refreshing.
Right now in spring is the best time, to just sit outside on one of the benches and tables that wrap around the outside corner of the building, soaking up the sun and enjoying beautiful Helmholtzplatz.
Eismanufaktur Berlin - Mitte

Best ice cream in Berlin--period. Lots of great flavors that vary on a daily basis, all delicious and made in-house. Try the chili pepper chocolate, its got some heat and will really make your lips tingle. At €1 per scoop, it can’t be beat. A real favorite.
Hüftengold - Prenzlauer Berg
Oderberger Str. 27, 10435 Berlin

Nice little cafe on Oderbergerstr., went here to get a milkshake for myself and a fruit smoothie for my friend. Both were quite tasty, and we were intrigued by the menu to maybe come back to try the brunch one day. Definitely bills itself as a healthy kind of place, despite the name. The outdoor seating was slightly uncomfortable, as it seemed like all the flimsy chairs just came from IKEA. Still, very nice especially in the beautiful spring weather.
arema - Moabit
Birkenstr. 30, Moabit, 10551 Berlin
10-05-2008
There’s not a of a lot of cafes in Moabit (as compared to Prenzl’berg), especially around Birkenstr. area, so Arema is a definitely valuable for that. The interior is really large and not too crowded during the day, so it lends itself well as a place to work or study. While the coffee and drinks aren’t exceptional, they’re not bad either and I went back here many times when I lived in the area. Not sure how the food is, but I was surprised by the high prices, given the neighborhood.
Cafe Fleury - Mitte
Weinbergsweg 20, 10119 Berlin

Went here for a light dinner one night--very cute on the inside, and comfy-chic. The food was limited in selection--mostly quiches, sandwiches, and salads--but it was tasty nonetheless. The prices are pretty decent, under €5 for a slice of quiche with a generous side salad. My friend had the croque monsieur and it was made to order, very tasty. Didn’t try the coffee, just had wine, but that was nice. All in all, a place I would return to again for lunch or a late afternoon snack, but perhaps not substantial enough for dinner. Nice staff, too.
Lucerna - Praga
Vodickova 36, 1 Praha

Another place that you have to go to at least once. Lucerna dance club is just…special. The place is always packed with all the euro tourists who come to town and want to have a good time. The dance floor is a sweaty, crowded mess, with people just looking to dance their pants off. 80s night (Thursday, I believe) is perhaps the best night to go, where they play all your favorite 80s tunes and project the videos on the stage, where incidentally you are more than encouraged to dance. Quite fun, but maybe not repeatedly.
Globe - Praga
Pštrossova 6, 110 00 Praha
24-03-2008
The Globe is a bookstore and a cafe and an internet shop, fulfilling the various needs of Prague’s large expat community. The owners are very nice and will help you to find what you are looking for, even if it is just someone to chat with in English when you get a little homesick.
Cafe Slavia - Praga
Smetanovo nábřeží 1012/2, 110 00 Praha
24-03-2008
Another Prague cafe absolutely steeped in tradition. Slavia has played host to some important events in the city’s history and its patrons throughout the years are infamous. Today, it is a bit quieter than its former revolutionary times, but it is still a wonderful place to visit and have a coffee and take a breather. The food on offer is surprisingly good for what is primarily a cafe and bar. Try to get a seat near the windows so you can watch all the trams go by.
Café Louvre - Praga
Národní 22, 11000 Praha

A gem of an old-world coffee house, the atmosphere here is palpable. One has to order the hot chocolate, it is divine! There are plenty of newspapers on offer to browse while you spend an afternoon sitting here, writing your novel or just enjoying the setting. Always a favorite.
