The Harvester - Fleet

Cove Road, Fleet, Hampshire GU51 2SH

08-08-2008

The best thing about this place is the early bird deal where the meals are 1/3 off the usual price on the menu ordered before 5pm on certain days. The worst thing about this place was the penne pasta, tomato sauce and garlic bread that was my main meal. I wouldn’t bother complaining about that because it’s not like I was expecting something from an Italian restaurant. When they said they had no tiramisu left, at first I felt weepy but the slice of warm apple pie was brought out. It saved the day. Plenty of vegetarian options were spotted and the desserts are well worth it.

Sanjit Chudha I’ve never been drawn to the Harvester chain - I always get the feeling the food might be a bit dodgy. That said, you seemed to get on alright so it can’t be bad.

Cyber Candy - Covent Garden

3 Garrick Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9BF

08-08-2008

So pleased was I to find this candy filled castle. I managed to pick some all time favourites such as Brazil nuts, sherbet lemons and liquorice allsorts. Some unusual finds were thrown in the mix too. These included: banana chocolates, yoghurt coated raisins and chocolate stones. The shop has a Japanese vibe about it, selling Hello Kitty and Japanese chocolates on sticks. Slush puppies are sold in every flavour going. This is the best pick’n’mix shop in the world or atleast mine.

Iceland Foods - Gateshead

7-8 Interchange Centre, West Street, Gateshead NE8 1BH

17-07-2008

The slogan ”...So that’s why mums go to Iceland”, probably doesn’t do it any favours and I’ve seen plenty of men shopping here. Freezer food is pretty much all they sell with the exception of biscuits, coffee, crisps, bread etc. If you went in here with a budget of £10 you could easily come out with 10 meals to serve 4 people. There are a lot of good deals on ice-cream and the strawberry cheesecake is only £1. Not the cheapest freezer shop in town but atleast they have a delivery service.

george123 The importance of these places in political terms are high. Iceland allows low paid to afford such things as Sunday roast. I am a low paid worker and use this store for frozen veg and great bags of chicken that will last for weeks at about £5! If such stores were not about then poverty would be more harsh and could bring down governments!

Bar 42 - Newcastle upon tyne

16-18 Hood Street, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 6JQ

13-07-2008

Dark, Dingy and definitely the coolest place to get cheap trebles from. That is of course when you hit on lucky with the right day. It’s either Tuesday or Wednesday but I end up having one too many trebles to remember which day. There isn’t a very friendly atmosphere but this place is what you make it. The staff are nice enough and there is a bar on each floor. Tables are cornered off and it’s quite cosy and private. Live sport is shown here and a mixed bunch get in but overall I’d say it was pretty trendy.

layersoflife no not here they don’t :-(

theskully what the hell is a treble?

newcastle international airport - Newcastle upon tyne

Newcastle upon tyne NE3 2QG

08-07-2008

Tucked out of the way yet still easy enough to get to, Newcastle airport is quite small with a simple layout. You will not have to walk miles upon miles from getting your caffeine fix to boarding your flight. There are your usual airport shops such as duty free, Boots and Starbucks and there is a nail bar too. It’s pretty standard as far as airports go but I’m giving it 4 stars for the simplicity of it all. If you get lost here then I think you have navigational problems.

High Pit Pizza - High Pit

6 Clifton Road, Cramlington, Northumberland NE23 6TG

08-07-2008

Delicious pizzas and garlic bread which is unusually good for a take away place. I got the 10” vegetarian pizza which was £4.50 and the 10” garlic bread which was £2.50. There are kebabs, wraps and desserts available. I also noticed that they do vegi burgers which is not something you see everywhere. I’ll definitely be stopping by here again the next time I’m in the area. Quality pizzas and plenty of vegetarian options is all good news.

Strada - Newcastle upon tyne

Old Eldon Square, Blackett Street, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 7JG

08-07-2008

Not bad at all considering it’s an Italian chain restaurant. Franky & Benny’s this is not. If you’re looking for somewhere central to eat and you want a good meal for a reasonable price then stop by here. Strada is fairly small in size and it’s pretty cosy too. The staff are friendly enough and there was a small wait for the order but it turned up eventually. I actually got complimentary garlic bread because of the wait. The vegetarian penne pasta dish was delicious and so was the cheese and tomato garlic bread. A place for people who ‘do lunch’. Never compare this place to Pizza Hut.

Monument Mall Shopping Centre - Newcastle upon tyne

Blackett Street, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 7AL

08-07-2008

This is a tiny shopping mall which is about 50 times smaller than the Metro Centre. Monument Metro station is on the lower level of the mall and you can exit through it. The smell of Millies Cookies will tempt you as you short cut through the mall while it’s raining or to simply avoid the outside crowds. There is a food hall on the upper level and shops such as Zavvi, Bodyshop, NUFC Store and TK Maxx. Don’t worry, you won’t get lost.

Guitarguitar - Newcastle upon tyne

Newgate Street, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 5JG

08-07-2008

The newest guitar shop on Newcastle’s music shop scene sells a range of guitars including leftys, banjos bass and classical guitars. Amps and effects pedals can be found here too. I’ve bought a few cables from here and they were pretty standard as far as prices go. The staff are very knowledgeable and will answer any questions and queries. Unlike some music shops, there is no snobbery here. Pull up a stool, pick a guitar and make yourself at home.

The Sports Cafe - Newcastle upon tyne

19-25 Grainger Street, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 5JG

08-07-2008

Only a few times have I found myself here wishing that I hadn’t said yes and follwed the crowd. The Sports Cafe is a very big place which is over three floors and it’s very easily to get lost in after a few pints. If you like big spaces filled with lager lads and sports enthusiasts then you’ll fit right in. There are plenty of pool tables and TVs showing live sport. If you want to watch the match with a huge group of people in town then you’d probably be better off here. Totally lacks what I would call a good atmosphere and don’t let the name fool you, it’s not a cafe.

guernican We need more of these. Although I think you’re holding back, young layersoflife. Get in there and really abuse these places… think of it as 3 hours of your life that you’ll never get back. Unable to get a seat. Jostled by some Wayne in a knock-off football shirt. And so on. The savage, fist-clenching nastiness of it all.

I’m actually winding myself up writing this.
