The New Inn in fremington is a nice little pub but is probably best known locally for it’s sunday lunches, booked up weeks in advance by locals in the know they do the most immense lunches you can think of, even the so called 'kids’ portions could feed an army, although doggy bags will be provided if asked! the prices are great value for money and they will usually squeeze you in if they can even without a booking. Great food and great staff .

Tarka books in Bear Street Barnstaple is a proper old fashioned bookstore. Selling everything from the latest paperbacks to old and rare second hand books it is the kind of place that you can spend hours in browsing the shelves. Every subject is covered from history to music, arts and science fiction and the owner knows his stuff about books-a nice place to waste a couple of hours just browsing, but please buy to keep him going, it would be a shame to lose another traditional shop.

Fiascos is a great sandwich bar where you can choose your own fillings from a wide range of ingredients. With a choice of white ,brown or wholemeal bread you can pick anything from the sublime to the ridiculous ( handy for those wierd pregnancy cravings!) The also do jacket potatoes and salad boxes.At the back of the shop is a (very) tiny cafe that is great for lunch but very hard to get a seat at busy times.

The national lottery shop isn’t really a shop, more of a small market type stall with a cover over it situated in the walkway of Green Lanes shopping centre. It sells (of course!) tickets for the lottery but also every type of scratchcard you can think of is spread out on the counter for you to choose from. It can get busy especially on lottery days but it is handy for buying tickets on your way past to other shops.

The sweet and confectionary section of Youings is a great place to be, situated in a old fashioned buiding its a proper old style sweet shop with a row of jars behind the counter but also a wide range of modern sweets and boxes of chocolates. On the counter is a display box of handmade chocolates that you can pick from to make an individual gift box for that special someone.

J&A cameras is a small but professional photo equipment shop. They sell everything from normal cameras to dvd camcorders and high end cameras for trade photographers. The service is excellent and the staff really know their stuff but as you would expect you get what you pay for and this is reflected in the price sometimes.

Poundworld is ,well,exactly what it says on the tin, a whole world of different items for a pound! On my last visit i picked up a stainless steel dog bowl for a quid, the exact same item at the pet shop was £7.99. They do a wide range of kids toys, pet products, cleaning products and ornaments. At the back they sell cards and gift wrap. A large and airy store everything is easy to find.

Clic is one of the more reasonably priced charity shops in Barnstaple. The shop is bright and airy and they do a good range of clothes and toys. Most of the back of the shop is taken up by the book department and these are very reasonably priced, most at at 25p for paperback and 50p or a £1 for hardback. Quite a small shop but well stocked.

Banburys is a huge department store, it incorporates a lot of concession store and also a huge perfume counter and homeware section. Upstairs is a restaurant that is well frequented by locals looking for a quiet break in the middle of their shopping. It is a higher end store and therfore tends to be quite pricy but it is well alid out with an great selection of products.

Timpson is a great place for shoe repair, the prices are reasonable and the staff are trained well in all aspects of repair. They also do key cutting of all shapes and sizes of keys. The shop stocks a wide range of bags in addition to travel items such as passport holders. I have always found the service to be excellent here.
