Banh Mi Bay - Bloomsbury

4-6 Theobald's Road, Holborn, London WC1X 8PN

30-11-2011

The guy behind the counter recommended the Bahn Mi Bay Special, which includes pork pate, pork roll and spiced pork. They also have an option of a special Vietnamese baguette – it costs a bit more but is more authentic as it is made with rice flour rather than wheat.

When I took a bite, I was a little disappointed by the bread-to-filling ratio – the flavors of the filling weren’t punchy enough to stand up to all of the bread. I love all of the ingredients that go in, especially the pickled vegetables and cilantro, but for some reason everything tasted a bit muted. That said, it’s still a bánh mì and so I still finished it – it just wasn’t one that I would necessarily rave about or go back for.

Butlers Wharf Chop-House - Bermondsey

36e Shad Thames, Southwark, London SE1 2YE

23-11-2010

Decent value on a 3 course for £20 deal. Best aspect of the restaurant is the view though. Tower Bridge lit up at night, right outside your table, is magical, and it was a great place to bring a friend visiting from out of town. Service was pleasant, if not speedy, and we were at a table tucked around the corner from the rest of the dining room so it wasn't as loud as being in the main area. Would definitely come back in the summer to snag an outdoor table. Favorite dish of the night (and I'm someone who doesn't usually like desserts): sticky toffee pudding.

oliver's fish and chips - Belsize Park

Haverstock Hill, London NW3 2BA

22-10-2010

Really nice and crisp matzo haddock last night - maybe a tad underseasoned but easily rectified with a couple of shakes of salt. Chips were good as well, though a few were undercooked - the crisp, smaller chips that were cooked for longer were amazing. Surprised to see how packed it got - we wandered in around 7.30pm and there were two other tables, and when we left the whole place was rammed and there were people queueing for tables. At least that kind of business means that the fish doesn't sit around for long - tastes fresh to me!

Herman ze German - Embankment

19 Villiers Street, London WC2N 6NE

06-10-2010

Stopped in for currywurst and pomme frites with a friend, to relive drunken antics in Germany. As long as you love the curry sauce they pour over everything (and I do), this is pretty fantastic. There's also a pretty cool automatic sausage slicing machine that we were mesmerized by. This stuff goes down particularly well after a few drinks. They've also got a case full of interesting sandwiches and pastries - we tried a black and white cookie, which is more cake-like than cookie-like, and I saw a pretzel croissant that looked interesting, though I was too full to sample it. There's a bench outside, but no other seating, so plan on standing at one of the counters to scarf down your food, or take it to go and have a wander while munching.

Yu-foria - Soho

38 Beak Street, London W1F 9RG

05-08-2010

The Qype event at Yu-foria was a great chance to try out yet another frozen yogurt shop's offerings. I was excited to see mochi nubbins as a topping here - something you can readily get at most fro-yo places in the US but one that seems more rare over here. My cup of frozen yogurt with rum-soaked pineapple and mochi was gone in a flash - this stuff is refreshing and tart and not too sweet, which makes it so much easier to eat a large cup of it. I marginally prefer the frozen yogurt at Frae and Snog though - it seems creamier at those places - but the mochi nubbins that are only available at Yu-foria mean that I will definitely be back for more. As other people have noted, the 'living' walls of plants are pretty cool as well.

Apollo Cinema - St. James's

19 Regent Street, London SW1Y 4LR

12-07-2010

My first visit to this swish cinema was for Toy Story 3, thanks to Qype and Sony. The 4K system and Real3D specs made for a very enjoyable experience, especially since the film was great as well. The seats are incredibly comfortable - every seat has a good view and they're much wider than normal movie theatre seats. The convenient location means that next time I'm looking for a place to watch a 3D movie, this will be top of the list. Thanks to Chris for organizing!

Drinksfusion - Londres

1 Caldwell Street, London SW9 0HD

26-05-2010

Drinksfusion were on hand at the Cobden Club for a Qype event - they treated us to amazing cocktails and some canape / shot pairings that were delicious. My favorite was the seared tuna bites with watermelon shots - the flavors worked together so well. The bartenders were calm and collected despite constantly making drinks for us Qypers, and the brains behind Drinksfusion were friendly and informative about the ingredients they like to use. Geneva gin (from Holland) was used in several of the cocktails and gave them a strong gin flavor that balanced with the other ingredients - I might have to keep an eye out for this gin in particular. Found out they are amenable to doing private parties for individuals, not just corporate type events, so something to keep in mind if you want to have a bit of a special night!

Chipotle - Soho

114-116 Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0JR

24-05-2010

I was incredibly excited to see a branch of US burrito chain Chipotle open up in London. They're a little behind the curve though - so many burrito places have opened up recently that they're not the big guys in town. Burritos here are pricier than at other outlets (Benito's Hat, Chilangos, etc) and a lot more expensive than the burrito trucks (Luardos, Daddy Donkey). Burritos are about the same size here as other places in London (but smaller than the burritos I remember from back in the US). If you're ok with paying 7 quid for a burrito (add guacamole for 1.40!!) then I guess this is the place for you - otherwise, while the quality of the ingredients is maybe a bit higher than the other places, you might still end up feeling a bit ripped off. A few positives - the carnitas I had was full of porky flavour and there was a nice selection of Tabasco sauces to amp up the spice. There's also pretty decent seating, which makes it a good option for a fast, sit down meal in this part of town, where you can still get out for under a tenner a head. I wish I loved it more - I'll just have to go back to the ones in the US to get my proper Chipotle fix.

The Hung Drawn & Quartered - City of London

26-27 Great Tower Street, London EC3R 5AQ

06-05-2010

Nothing super special, but a good pub to know about if you ever find yourself in this part of town on a weekend and are looking for a pub that is open. It's big inside, so plenty of space if you have a large party in town.

The Plough - Dulwich

381 Lordship Lane, Dulwich, London SE22 8JJ

06-05-2010

Good pub for meeting friends - lots of space means you can almost always grab a big table with no trouble. There's one bay window in particular that's my favorite. Selection of beers is reasonable and the food (fish finger sandwiches!) is pretty decent quality and not too expensive.
