Reza Patisserie - West Kensington
345 Kensington High Street, London W8 6NW
30-10-2007
This Iranian greengrocer/delicatessen/patisserie, is the perfect place to find more unusual or specific food stuff, as they stock all sorts of Iranian goods and food stuffs as well as decorative items, as well as fresh fruit and veg, including seasonal imported from iran. A very nice range of pastries and traditional sweets, and some Persian media also available. Happy vibe, with lots of lights and music, and they like to have a bit of a dance in the street during Iranian new year in March...watch out for that!
Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood - Bethnal Green
Cambridge Heath Road, London E2 9PA
30-10-2007
Best museum ever! Here you can find all sorts of interesting toys and games from decades gone by, one of the biggest collections in the world, and follow the history of play from puzzles and doll houses to bikes toy soldiers, and they also have lots of hands on activities going on, so take kids! Also a great collection of costimes and teddy bears. And also worth checking what exhibitions are on at the moment, as they change all the time.
Mother Earth - Highbury
282-284 St. Pauls Road, Highbury, London N1 2LH
30-10-2007
One of the best and most well stocked health food shops in North London, cos they only stock the best stuff. Although this usually means there's less range, it is good stuff, and they have an organic and ethically sourced policy. They're a small, community conscience business with friendly, helpful staff. They also stock fresh fruit and veg and do their own organic veg box, as well as selling all sorts of health related stuff, including a good range of vitamins and supplements, and loose grains and seeds that you can buy in bulk. They even do home delivery if you shop over £30!
Foyles - Leicester Square
113-119 Charing Cross Road, Leicester Square, London WC2H 0EB

This is the biggest and arguably the best bookstore in the country, and is also one of the oldest, having been in business for over a hundred years. Used to be very popular for radical materials, but is still a well used resource for students.
You can find pretty much any book you’re looking for, from four floors to browse in, in any genre you can think of. The number of comfy sofas dotted around the place offer great browsing potential, and there’s also a great jazz cafe for chilling in. The cafe does really good coffees and the most amazing vegan chocolate cake ever, and there are music performances on some nights. (Worth going just for the cafe!)
Big Red - Holloway
385 Holloway Road, London N7 0RY
29-10-2007
Very popular during the weekends, really alternative, retro atmosphere, with a great jukebox selection, and dim ambient lighting. They also do food, but it's pretty much totally burger based, so not a very good selection. There's a big bar, as well as comfy booths, and the interior has really mad decor all over the place, including an old school pinball machine. Plenty to keep you entertained here, four pool tables and a big screen for football viewings. Gets really busy in the evenings, really social atmosphere.
The Cross King - Kings Cross
126 York Way, Kings Cross, London N1 0AX
29-10-2007
This is a really great pub with an 'alternative’, hippy vibe, hidden down York Way (off King’s Cross). It’s also really comfy, especially in the bar area where there are lots of sofas and a fireplace, and hangings and fabric all over the walls. All sorts of events happen in the bar room, they even do film screenings as well as different music nights. I haven’t actually tried any of the food yet, but the menu looked really good and vegetarian friendly, real, healthy food, and some amazing sounding desserts. Really great, different place for a casual chill with mates and a few pints.
Pizzeria Oregano - Islington
18 St. Albans Place, Islington, London N1 0NX
29-10-2007
The actual food and drink experience of this small, hidden Italian restaurant off Upper Street, was very good, and is one of the more popular Italian choices around Angel. But when I went here with some friends, we were given a pretty cold reception since there was a big group of us, and the place seems quite bent on being respectful for the couples who tend to eat romantic dinners here. So not the best place for a rowdy dinner party, but not bad if you want a quiet evening of good pizza. I definitely recommend this place over Pizza Express, food wise.
Giraffe Cafe - Islington
29-31 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 2SZ
29-10-2007
This cafe is one in a chain of 'Giraffes' that have become pretty popular since first opening. It has a pretty cosy yet buzzing atmosphere with low lighting and lots of orange and brown decor everwhere, and the seating arrangements are either long benches or comfy booths. It's usually pretty busy, and is very child friendly, so you often see families eating here, and there's also outdoor seating. They have quite a mixed and eclectic selection of food from around the world, better small dishes like starters than main courses, but they also do mixed plates and burgers. I'd say go here for a snack and a coffee more than anything else though, and they do really good ice creams and smoothies that won't hurt you money-wise.
Misty Moon - Camden
40 Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8BG
26-10-2007
This pub used to be one of the Wetherspoon pubs, now it's changed it's name, but is still a popular local for Camden dwellers. It has a nice chilled out atmosphere, with the perfect balance between old man pub and cool hangout. Really cheap drinks can be found here, and really good service, and they even do music nights. There's a nice little outside sitting area, but the place itself is pretty big.
Casaba Meze and Shisha Bar - Islington
162 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 8NE
26-10-2007
If you're gonna have shisha, I would recommend this place, mainly because of the cushioned seating arrangement and the fact that it's small and cosy and has friendly staff with excellent service. They do a good assortment of really good food (meze) at reasonable prices, serve alcohol, and have a huge range of shisha flavours. The atmosphere was very relaxed and laid back. When I went there, we were some of the last remaining customers, but there was no leaving pressure! Nice decor too, dimly lit with lots of wooden sculptures.
