Rich Mix - Bethnal Green
35-47 Bethnal Green Road, Bethanl Green, London E1 6LA
23-01-2012
Rich Mix is a pretty decent cinema in terms of facilities. The bar’s reasonably priced, there’s a cafe on the ground floor which offers decent food so you’re not forced to resort to nachos and hot dogs if you’re starving before the show, and there’re some comfy sofas on the first floor in case you, like I did, had nothing else to do before the show started and just wanted to chill.
Given the location, I was a little taken aback by the ticket prices. I think it’s £9 per ticket pretty much every day, although you can get tickets for £5 if you go in the afternoon on certain days or have an Idea Store membership. It’s not that centrally located after all, and I guess I expected there to be one cheaper day like what the Barbican offers.
Graffitimundo - Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires
23-01-2012
Graffitimundo conduct street art tours of Buenos Aires. Run by Brits Jonny and Marina, their knowledge of the incredible street art scene in the city is unparalleled. When I went on the tour in 2010, Jonny was about to talk about the different techniques, subject matter and even the various collaboarations the artists had been involved in recently. In addition to providing an alternative tour of such a great city, Graffitimundo will also give each customer a list of insider tips for the city. Should you decide you’d like to bring a piece of Buenos Aires street art home with you, they will also arrange all the paperwork and even shipping back to your home country. Highly recommended!
Banksy CCTV - Fitzrovia
Newman Street, Outside Royal Mail Office, London W1T 1PA
23-01-2012
As others have noted, it’s no longer there. If you’re one of the lucky ones who got to see it, then you, like me, probably marvelled at the sheer scale, not to mention the audacity of it all. A cheeky piece of work, made all the better by it having been done in a secure area. Heh!
Banksy Rat - Fitzrovia
Clipstone Street, Fitzrovia, London W1W 5DQ
23-01-2012
I remember reading about this on Twitter the day it appeared, and running down the street during my lunch break so that I could take a look at it before it disappeared. I don’t know if it’s still there now, given how quickly other works by Banksy get buffed or painted over, and would love to find out from others if it’s still there as I no longer work in the area.
China City - Leicester Square

My friend booked a place for 12 of us for Chinese New Year Eve dinner as China City is one of the few places we know that offer hot pot (a dish some people have described as the Chines version of fondue). Given the sheer size of the group, they put us in one of the private rooms which came equipped with karaoke facilities. No comments either way as we didn’t make use of this particular feature, but it was nice to have a rack of coat hooks and several benches on which to put our stuff.
We decided to order the sets, rather than order individual platters of meat and seafood, figuring this would be easier. An hour after we placed our orders, we were still waiting for our food, and were told that the kitchen was very busy and that the chef had a lot to slice. Fair enough, I suppose, given the day, but you’d think they would have been better prepared. On top of that, whenever we ordered drinks, we’d end up having to go out and remind them several times that we’d placed a drinks order which had yet to arrive. The food in itself was okay, but if you know hot pot, you’d know it’s self-service cooking, so whether it’s good or bad is pretty much just as much a function of how disciplined you are and how good the ingredients are. I will say the portions were generous though. We had to leave one third of our food behind!
Les Saveurs de l'Orient - Bourse
43 Passage du Panorama, 75002 Paris
16-01-2012
Les Saveurs de L’Orient serves both Moroccan and Lebanese food, meaning you can choose to go for the traditional hot and cold mezzo dishes, or a platter of meats, or opt for a very substantial tangine or couscous dish… Or, if in a large group, combine and share! Personally, I’d recommend the Moroccan menu as the tangines and couscous dishes are both substantial and incredibly tasty.
In terms of drinks, the restaurant serves wines and beers from Lebanon and Morocco. I have not tried the beer but can say that the red wine is surprisingly not too bad.
This place tends to be quite popular with tourists given its location in a beautifully historic shopping arcade, as well as its operating hours, as this is also open on Sundays.
La Bontendrie - La Fayette Richer
9 Rue Trévise, 75009 Paris
16-01-2012
La Bontendrie is a friendly and good value restaurant serving traditional French cuisine. The lunch menu, offering two courses for just over 14 euros and a main for €12.50 is ridiculously good value given the area and how busy this place gets during lunch.
Despite the friendly service and the good food, i have taken away ne star given thr irregular hours this restaurant appears go keep. I have come here on a day the restaurant was meant to be open only to find the place pitch-dark with no notice of what has happened… And walked past the following day to find the restaurant operating as usual.
If you are in the area, give this place a go. You won’t regret it.
The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town - City of London
12-16 Artillery Lane, The Breakfast Club (behind the Smeg fridge), London E1 7LS
06-01-2012
This is a great hidden bar with an amazing location, just minutes away from Liverpool St station. I’ve been here three times and have received friendly service each time. The last time I was here was for my birthday celebration and the staff were amazingly co-operative, giving us a table, even collaborating with my boyfriend to surprise me with cake and song.
The cocktails are definitely delicious, and the prosecco very well-priced at £18 a bottle. The bar also serves standard bar fare to help you absorb all of the tasty tasty alcohol.
The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town does get crowded very early on so my advice is for you to arrive before 6.30 pm to maximise your chances of getting in.
The Two Brewers - Moorgate
121 Whitecross Street, Islington, London EC1Y 8JH
06-01-2012
Friendly bar staff, good range of drinks and, best of all, they allow you to bring in food from Whitecross St Market during the week and eat, provided you order drinks, of course. In the evenings, you can order pizza to be delivered to the pub to satisfy those late night cravings.
The pub also has a dartboard which, strangely enough, is located right next to the entrance of the ladies so do watch out when making your way to the facilities.
Good Vibes - Fitzrovia
35 11 Tottenham St, London W1
06-01-2012
If you’ve read the reviews of the other Good Vibes studios, you’ll realise that I am a big fan of Good Vibes’ Power Plate classes. The new studio at Fitzrovia has both Power Plate and spinning classes, and while I can only comment on the former (and they are indeed the best of all of the Power Plate classes I’ve been to across different gyms), the spinning classes seem quite popular.
I could go on and on about how the receptionists are friendly and helpful, and how Power Plate classes are limited to five people per class so that instructors can give you the attention you need, and that these classes do work me out and yet somewhere leave me energised to face the rest of the day, but I won’t.
Prices for classes vary, depending on whether you’re dropping in or have a package. If you’re able to come here on a regular basis and can commit to a year, I’d suggest getting a 12 month membership since, for £135 per month, you get unlimited classes – Power Plate, spinning and yoga – per month across all studios. Alternatively, if you’re not able to commit to that, you could wait for one of their promotions (usually summer and Christmas) when you can get between two and five classes free for purchasing a package of classes.
