Navajo Joe - Covent Garden
34 King Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 8JD
06-12-2011
I’ve been here four times now and have enjoyed the food and atmosphere each time. The Latin American style food is always very flavourful and abundant and I love the stenciled metal decorating the bar and ledges all over the place.
The last time I was at Navajo Joe was a few days ago for my work xmas do and it was a good choice for a company meal. We were seated in the mezzanine above and away from the crowds, but there was still a good buzz from the (not-too-loud) music and general activity of the place. Our waiter was right on the ball and made sure everyone received exactly the dish they ordered (well in advance of the party). Unlike many other restaurants who offer group xmas parties, the food on offer was actually really good and also very filling. It made a very nice change!
My only small gripe was that the bar in the basement, where my group all met up first, was a bit too small, over-crowded and the music was way too loud to hear each other speak. Then again, I’m not one much for clubs and that sort of thing, so maybe I’m not the best judge of such things!

I stayed here recently for an 80th birthday celebration and it was the perfect venue for such an event. The staff are warm and welcoming and ready to please and the rooms are large and comfortable. The bar area is large and attractive and the breakfast in the mornings is plentiful. The birthday celebration itself was in the large Burns room which was well laid out and the food served was very good. If I were to visit the area again I would want to stay here purely for comfort and I would definitely recommend.
The Screen On The Green - Islington

Since discovering this cinema in the last year, this has become my favourite place to see films that I think will be special. For one, the layout of the place is terrific. The seats, which are all plush and comfortable, are well spaced out with side tables on which to rest your drinks and snacks. There are comfortable sofas at the back, for which the tickets cost a bit extra, but I have found the cost to be worth it (especially when watching the three hour restored Metropolis!). The bar at the back of the theatre serves wine and snacks, often served at your seat and thankfully shuts down as the film is about to begin. This is a classy venue which I plan on patronising for years to come.
Curzon Mayfair Cinema - Mayfair

I recently visited this cinema for the first time for the live broadast of the National Theatre's production of Frankenstein. I'm very glad we got to see the show at this place as it is an excellent venue. It's rare to find a cinema amongst all the chains that treats its patrons as adults, but with a decent bar with an area for schmoozing pre-show and a well-kept theatre (at least in Screen 1), that is just what you get. The angular stone walls inside the theatre reminded me of some sort of 70s sci-fi show (think Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica) and the seats were plush and comfortable. This a lovely place which I will keep on the radar for future cinema outings.
Bloomingdelis - Bromley
3 Ravensbourne Road, London BR1 1HN

Situated not far from Bromley South station and opposite one of the three Starbucks in the area, Bloomingdelis is slightly hidden away from view of the High Street. One has the feeling that if it were a little less conspicuous it might do rather well. Specialising in so-called, "a taste of New York," they offer up breakfast and lunch, the latter of which is mainly sandwiches, as well as the revered Monmouth brand of coffee. As a native New Yorker, I wasn't so sure what on their menu counted as New York style, aside from the salt beef on rye sandwich (which was very good), in addition to the Bloomingdales-esque font of their logo (I won't tell if you won't). Still, it made a refreshing change to try a local cafe that isn't a chain and I think if they promote themselves a bit more it might be a bit less quiet inside than it was on the day that my partner and I tried them out.
The Royal Oak - Orpington

This is a decent pub, which is more like a restaurant. It’s a good place for family meals as the place is rather large and sprawling with many tables. The menu is quite large and extensive and full of lots of “comfort food.” I’ve been here twice and both times the service has been friendly and the food was very good. Not quite gastro-pub, but certainly better quality than Wetherspoons!

Went here for lunch and a drink for the first time today. On first impressions it feels like a fairly “grown up” pub. The decour is sober but attractive wood panelling, elegant wallpaper and dark colours. There are two different bar areas, one less formal than the other although the food served seem to be the same in both. The average age seemed to be 40s and above though although being younger than that I did not feel uncomfortable. There is a decent selection of food, which I enjoyed, although my partner was a bit disappointed with his salad, which was tiny! Good thing we ordered a side of chips and that my tuna sandwich was huge enough to share. A good place for a quiet drink but nothing really outstanding about this pub, at least not the first time.
Hong Kong Palace - Erith
180 West Street, London DA8 1AN
21-12-2008
Even after moving away from Erith three years ago, when visiting friends I still insist that we get food from Hong Kong Palace as it’s just so good! The portions are plentiful - my favourite is king prawn chop suey which has big, delicious prawns - and the service is usually pretty quick, especially if you go pick it up yourself instead of having it delivered. The barbecue ribs are some of the best I’ve tasted and are very meaty, although you need to make sure to wash your hands straight afterwards as otherwise you’ll end up with orange fingers for a couple of days! This place is good value and a definite recommendation. Apparently they are suffering a bit in the recession, so if you’re looking for a good Chinese take-away, definitely give this place a try and keep them in business!

After trying their fresh fruit juice some months ago and then realising afterwards that they had a nice little restaurant around the corner, I wanted to eventually try this place for a bit to eat, which I did today. Delighted after reading on the menu that they served all day breakfast (my favourite meal of the day), we decided to give it a try. I had the cheese, tomato and red onion omelette with fries and a fresh orange juice. The food was nice enough, though nothing that inspirational. There were a bit too many red onions in my omelette, and were pretty raw (the onions, not the eggs), making me very grateful for the orange juice! Unfortunately, the service was generally a bit slow and grumpy (which I noticed caused another couple to give up and leave) and it just wasn’t a pleasant enough experience for me to want to really try it again.
Revolution Vodka - Soho
2 St Annes Court, Soho, London W1F 0AZ

I agree with what a past reviewer said about this place bringing out the best in people. I hadn’t been here in a number of years until my recent work xmas do, but I remember having fun here a few years ago at various leaving dos, even with people I didn’t know very well. Fast forward to my recent xmas party, which was one of the best ones we’ve had in years. We had a large area roped off for us, complete with very good food and a roulette table with an accompanying croupier, who was friendly and clearly knew how to handle a large crowd.
I think what makes this place work well for large (and small) crowds is the novelty itself of the drinks menu. It’s fun choosing different flavoured vodkas and the cocktails are all delicious. More traditional drinks like beer and wine are also available for the non-vodka drinkers and the bar staff are fast and friendly which means you get served with a smile and also don’t have to wait too long for a round of drinks. This is a really good choice for a party of revelling co-workers.
