The Greenway Centre - Edimburgo
75 Harvesters Way, Edinburgh, Scotland EH14 3JH
27-04-2008
The Greenway Centre, also known as Club 85 is based in Westerhailes of Edinburgh.
It is a members club, but non-members can go and pay 50p for entry.
There are 3 areas to Greenways I’ll cover each in details.
THE BAR
The Bar is massive! They have 2 pool tables, several seats, a darts area, and a DJ area. The bar is long, and prices are cheap. Staff are friendly and seem to know everybody. The bar isn’t the cleanest looking of areas and could do with some refurcishing.
THE LOUNGE
The lounge is gorgeous! It’s open on a Saturday night, where Karaoke or Cabaret is held. Rather than pub seats, there are mainly sofas around the lounge. there is a large fireplace, small dance area, most of the lounge is carpeted. Large pictures of historic westerhailes/trains are displayed on the walls. There is also a smaller bar in here.
THE FUNCTION ROOM
The function room is lovely. With a large dance floor, large stage for a DJ and several seats. Price is based on amount of people coming to a function, and if there is only enough to fill half a room, then the room will be halved with fake wall and you will only pay for the one half. Drinks are dearer in the function room, the bar is large. You have full use of the kitchen if you would like a function.
Definately a place to check out though. The Greenway Centre sometimes havs fun days which are great, with face-painting and bouncy castle, its a great day for the family.
Scots Guard Association Club - Edimburgo
2 Clifton Terrace, Edinburgh, Scotland EH12 5DR
27-04-2008
The Scots Guard Club is a building that looks like a posh b+b in the Haymarket area of Edinbirgh.
They have a pub area down the stairs, which I have never been in, a long corridor to the toilets, an outdoor smoking area, with benches, a lot better than standing at a front door. And upstairs, where I have been twice now, a function area.
Because I have only been to the function hall, I will cover this area.
The hall is not large, on an estimate, it would be busy for a crowd of 40 people. It’s clean with large tables, a miniscule dance floor, and a small stage where the DJ would set up. There are large bay windows which look out to Haymarket and a small bar.
Prices at the bar are standard pub prices, which is unexpected for a club as that is where they make their money.
The hall is clean, the staff are helpful and friendly. They even have a doorman in a lovely scottish tartan suit, who will meet and greet all that come in.
You have to be a member of the club, although I am unsure how much membership costs.
The only downfall is, in the function suite, there is 1 toilet, where anyone can use it. If you want bigger toilets, you have to go downstairs and along a long corridor.
Parking isn’t too great either but it is still a nice place to go to and would recommend a visit.
Staples UK Retail - Edimburgo
Hermiston Gait Retail Park, 3 Cultins Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH11 4DF
26-04-2008
Staples is a large office supply store on the west edge of the city at Hermiston Gait.
The stor is full of office supplies, chairs, printers, paper and stationary. There are lots of items at fantastic prices.
I visited Staples yesterday, 25/04/08. To purchase a printer and was advised that although the printers were at standard, not great, prices, I would benefit from taking the cover plan, they then advised I would have to buy my own USB cable, on top of the printer price and ink, as the ink with the printers only printed 2 sheets.
I have went through several printers in the past and normally, printer ink included in the box is sufficient for more than a couple of sheets.
When I said I did not want the cover plan, they kept pushing and pushing. I told them I would just leave it and look around first and suddenly both assistants dealing with me developed an attitude?!
So all in all, yes Staples is good for several supplies, but the customer service, and add-ons to the items for sale could be reviewed.
sco123 I used to work in this store(when you visited), The management put extreme amounts of pressure on every member of staff to sell complete care packages and reward cards with every item possible, Its got to the point where most of them couldnt care what you buy as long as you take the overpriced complete care package and a card.
Im not sure who served you but most of the staff dont know any better than what the management are feeding them. They are forcing the sale of Ink / USB cables because it boosts attachment records for the store, Also buying ink will get you a £5 discount but youll be forced to take crap paper to again boost the attachment ratings.
As a side note, the so called “Managers Specials” are a scam, you can infact buy the printer for a cheap price without the “free” complete care that you are actually tricked into paying for.
Id be more than happy to identify who served you, If you havnt already complained to head office. (The current customer service will not change without complaints.

247boxes I recently brought a laptop from Staples and took out the so called " Customer Care Package" only to find that when I needed the Customer Care, it was not worth the money at all!
When I took the cover out the salesperson advised it was for 12 months cover for my laptop, or so I thought, it turns out the 12 months cover I received was only for 7 days and the laptop was not allowed to be opened or used for the cover to be operative. I am confused, how can you check your laptop is working if you do not open or use it? So, why the cover?

Angus McLellan and company solicitors - Edimburgo
6 Sighthill Shopping Centre, Calder Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH11 4AW
25-04-2008
I used this solicitors when going through my previous divorce. It is based within a shopping complex and isn’t really much to look at but it’s definately a solicitors I would recommend.
They deal with Family Law, Criminal Law, Debt, Housing and accident claims and are extremely efficient.
There are 2 Solicitors that work within the firm. Upon a first impression, they do not look like your average solicitor, but after dealing with them you find that they are not only extremely friendly people, but they know their job and are friendly, trustworthy and reliable.
Upon entering the office, you are normally greeted by a secretary and a radio blasting out the latest tunes! The offices are glass panelled, not that discreet but enough so that you still feel like you are one-2-one with your solicitor.
They deal with legal aid also.
Sometimes it is hard to get an appointment soon, appointments can only be made in the afternoon as the solicitors spend their mornings in court.
I would definately recommend using this firm, as they are the best solicitors I have discovered within Edinburgh
Red, Hot and Blue Tattoo - Edimburgo
1a Brougham Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 9HW
24-04-2008
My husband and I have got a thing for tattoos, I like them small and feminine, he likes them big and unusual.
About a year ago, my mother in law, told us about a new tattoo studio she had heard off called Red Hot and Blue Tattoo. She passed it every day on the way to work and felt it looked nice.
We decided to go along, Initially so I could get a small tattoo on my back. And then so my husband could get a sleeve tattoo.
My experience of the place is, my tatooist was the most painful tatooist I have ever been to, and this was tattoo number 6! It is a small establishment very tastefully decorated with pictures and folders of tattoos on the table. There were pictures hanging on the walls that you could flick through as well.
The establishment was clean and equipment was opened from sterilised packets in front of us.
The furniture was funky and modern and the tatooists were friendly and pleasant. Displaying their work on their bodies.
My husbands tattoo cost over £400, I have since been told that this was a reasonable price. He went in 3 different sessions. His only downside is that he feels his tattoo is quite patchy.
It is a busy tattooist but you can normally get a space for that week.
The minimum cost of a tattoo here will be £30.
Excel Sports Academy - Edimburgo
St. Georges School for girls, Garscube Terrace, Edinburgh, Scotland EH12 6BG
24-04-2008
Last Summer I was looking for a group to put my eldest son into during the summer holidays. Myself and his father were working full time and needed somewhere for him to go.
A freind told me about the Excel Sports Academy and recommended it.
When I phoned them I initially asked for information. They sent me out an information pack that was easy to understand and full of details, programmes for the children with colourful pictures. I was advised that if I had any other questions, the friendly person on the phone, would help me with anything I needed to know.
I booked a place, I was able to get him in for the next week, which was fantastic and on the day took him along. My initial impressions were that I was dropping my son off at a sports day, I didn’t tour the Academy, I spoke to one of the gentleman who was friendly and seemed to have a knack with children. I believe all staff are trained and disclosure scotland checked.
I only paid for a sports package which was around £150 for the week, this can be a bit steep, but it was well worth it. My son came home full of praise for the place, was extremely tired, and was going on about all the great friends he made.
I will definately be enrolling my child this year.
I have since found out that you can pay extra for your child to do other activities, from horse riding to ice skating, they even have workshops, and I am sure they can even take your child off for a trip! They have all the sports facilities there and all the sports equipment.
This year I am putting my son in for a half day, you have that option as well as a full day, you can put them in for one week or for all the weeks of the summer.
Definately a place for the children, when you have no childcare but need to work!
Guilianos - Edimburgo
18-19 Union Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 3NQ
24-04-2008
I love going to Guilianos when dining in town. It is one of those Italian run restaurants that is hard to find these days. The waiters are Italian, the chefs are Italian and it just adds to that quality dining experience.
When you visit Guiliano’s you walk in to a long restaurant which goes round a corner. I would imagine it seats around 100 people, and all tables are normally filled, especially at the weekend!
The menu is extensive and full of quality Italian food, it is a warm and friendly atmosphere and great value for money. Although not as cheap as pub chain food, but you wouldn’t expect that.
Service is fast, you’re not always sitting there waiting, if you signal for a waiter, one will be by your side within seconds.
Attached to the restaurant is a chip shop, which you find is always busy, especially at the weekends. In my Opinion, the chip shop, isn’t as good as the restaurant, but when you’re coming out of a pub/club and absolutely revonous, it is the place to go.
Down sides - You do need to book well in advance for a table as the restaurant gets booked up quickly. The decor could be a bit better than it is. Although modern, I feel it would add to that Italian experience for a bit more Italian in the decor.
TK Maxx - Edimburgo
32 South Groathill Avenue, Craigleith Retail Park, Edinburgh, Scotland EH4 2LN
24-04-2008
TK Maxx is one of those shops that you either love or hate. They have a large selection of clothes mainly designer but their all put together. It’s not one section of the same item of clothing, you’ll find a grey motif t-shirt beside a pink plain t-shirt etc.
They do however, have a coloured size tag on the coathanger that means you’re not hunting through every single item to find your size.
The thing that I loove about TK Maxx is the prices, I recently got married and struggled finding an affordable bridesmaid dress in my budget, but on a visit to TK Maxx at Craigleith I discovered the most beaustiful dresses at only £29.99, I was in heaven!
When they have a sale, items can be reduced to as little as £2 and well worth checking out!
Upon entering the store you arrive at the womens clothing, this goes all the way round in a circle until you come to accessories and toiletries etc. And the tills which are based at the right hand side of the store.
In the centre of the shop, are the stairs leading up, though there is also a lift for customers. Up stairs they have a mens section, shoes for all, and baby/toddler clothes including homeware items.
One of the things that i really disapprove of with TK Maxx is their refund policy. If you lose your receipt, but the tags are still on the clothes, most shops will offer an exchange or credit note. With TK Maxx, you MUST have a receipt for any refund orexchange.
Dalry Swimming Centre - Edimburgo
29 Caledonian Crescent, Midlothian, Edinburgh, Scotland EH11 2AL
24-04-2008
The Dalry Swimming centre is one of the smallest pools I know of in Edinburgh, in saying that though, it is a lot quieter than most and so easier to take young children to, especially through the week.
There aren’t many extra’s with the centre, they have the one pool, at a standard size but several benches for those viewing.
It’s cheap and basic, but clean and well staffed.
There are plenty of lockers within the pool, with seperate changing areas.
Definately a pool to consider if you don’t want the madness and bustle which more popular pools bring!
Gladstone's Land - Edimburgo
477b Lawnmarket, Midlothian, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2NT
24-04-2008
I visited Gladstone’s Land when I was in primary school, many years ago, but have had friends go recently and I have been told it is still the same.
As I was with my school we were all told to change into 17th century clothes which was interesting to say the least, we were then given a guided tour around 6 different rooms that showed different walks of life in that era from the poor lifestyles to the richer lifestyle. The rooms are full with objects from that period where we were given stories about each, and interesting pieces of information about life at that time.
The one thing that really sticks out is the ceiling in one of the rooms, it was truely magnificent, and I also believe is handpainted.
Today, to go in as a visitor you can walk around the rooms yourself and spend as much time as you like. If you would like a guide, you can request one, at an additional cost.
They have a souvineer shop there but there are also some downfalls.
There are no toilets and there isn’t a cafe within the centre either. There is nowhere for car parking, unless you enjoy to walk.
The prices are fairly reasonable though and downfalls aside, it makes an educational and interesting day for the whole family!
