Ladybug Ladybug - San Francisco

24th St 3870, 94114 San Francisco

09-07-2008

This is a store that will fill your desk drawers with completely senseless, useless, frivolous trinkets. You will blow serious cash here if you’re not careful. If you’re prone to loving lunchboxes with weird sayings on them, or coffee mugs imprinted with the words of the U.S. Constitution…that slowly disappear when hot liquid is poured into them, this is your store!

There are several hundred things I found that reminded me of my room circa 1988. Not that I necessarily need a troll doll with flaming orange hair, but I was tempted.

I also love the selection of cards and stationary. They have a huge inventory of things that will both make you smile and wax nostalgia.

sfKristina Ha ha. Yes, but that would be no fun at all!

Amoeba Records - San Francisco

Haight St 1855, 94117 San Francisco

09-07-2008

Amoeba is the best record store in the Bay Area, bar none. Used and new, vinyl and cd, whatever you are searching for in vain at the local Virgin Megastore, you will most likely find hidden here.

The store is enormous, so make time out of your day to spend at least an hour or two, if you’re serious about your music hunt.

The location isn’t fun on a weekend, when you’ll be hard-pressed to find parking, and you’ll most likely be hit up for beer and/or money for beer. Street urchins love Haight Street.

But if you’re looking for the latest release from Petty Booka, this is your store. They also have a seriously huge DVD collection, so if you’re looking for a used copy of Howard the Duck, this may be your mecca.

Fiona's Sweetshoppe - San Francisco

Sutter Street 214, 94108 San Francisco

05-07-2008

It’s tiny. And when I say tiny, I mean Mini-Me tiny. You’ll need to lose weight to fit into this small, tourist-stuffed shop.

But it will be worth it, because they have every candy you can’t find at the local drug store. It’s full of English and Scottish candy and chocolate, most of which is available for a sample, which they’ll offer right off the bat.

Fiona was actually the one that helped me fill my bag, and she was delightful. Her story is quite interesting…she’s a doctor, but pushes sugar rushes to innocent candy-addicts in San Francisco. Go figure. A doctor that encourages candy consumption.

I think I may love her.

Lahore Karahi - San Francisco

O'Farrell Street 612, 94109 San Francisco

02-07-2008

The best, cheapest Indian food restaurant in San Francisco, by far. I’m addicted to the Chicken Tikka Masala, and I’m not ashamed to say I can eat an entire plate all by myself while fighting off my husband at the same time. In fact, this is the only negative I can say about Lahore. This restaurant encourages selfish, pig-like behavior.

Oh, and the location may be a tad “colorful” for tourists not familiar with the Tenderloin. Just be on the lookout and you’ll be fine. This place is worth the risk of being hit up for change every now and again.

Blue Bottle Coffee - San Francisco

Linden St 315, 94102 San Francisco

01-07-2008

I don’t usually drink coffee, but I do love hot chocolate, and the hot chocolate at Blue Bottle is delicious.

However, the line out the garage door is not delicious. It’s a bitter, nasty, weak cup o’ WAIT. Be prepared to be in line for a while for your java fix. They do not rush when they’re creating their caffeinated masterpieces.

Don’t get me wrong. It may be worth it, but it depends on how high your tolerance level and/or patience level is.

I actually prefer Philz coffee to Blue Bottle, but that’s a personal taste.

Great American Music Hall - San Francisco

OFarrell Street 859, Civic Center/Tenderloin, 94109 San Francisco

01-07-2008

One of the best venues in the city! I loved seeing Holly Cole perform here. It was probably the best show I’ve ever seen in San Francisco.

It’s an intimate setting, with an upstairs balcony in addition to a large floor area. But get there early. Space fills up quickly when they’re hosting a popular show.

Sparky's 24 Hour Diner - San Francisco

Church Street 242, Castro, 94114 San Francisco

01-07-2008

This is the place do NOT want to go if you want to be comforted and nurtured after a night on the town with friends, drinking, and general debauchery. At 4 in the morning, you will not get a hug and a warm, fuzzy feeling from this place.

But you may get indigestion that would kill a horse. It’s definitely a greasy spoon, with a “too cool for you” flair. I usually pass up this place on a night when I’m craving food that will lull me to sleep. Eating at Sparky’s is like taking a pack of No-Doze with a Jolt Cola. It will keep you up as long as your stomach will allow.

However, they’re open 24 hours. They’re not boring. And they have fries at 4 a.m. Patronize at your own risk, but be guaranteed you will come home with a good story to tell.

Patxi's Chicago Pizza - San Francisco

Hayes St 511, 94102 San Francisco

01-07-2008

Many Chicago transplants in San Francisco will gladly offer up criticism about Paxti’s deep dish, claiming it’s not authentic Chi-Town pie. However, I have never been to Chicago, and therefore I can eat this pizza without hesitation. Bottom line…It’s really good pizza.

You have two choices; thin or deep dish. I often opt for the thin, because the deep dish is simply offensively big. I couldn’t imagine eating an entire small without being completely disgusted with myself and avoiding looking at myself in a mirror for a good week or two.

However, if you get the thin crust, you can easily devour two or three slices without guilt. You may even want to order one of their fabulous salads to go with it. My favorite at the moment is their spinach and bacon salad, although their Cesar is pretty tasty.

The Paxti’s Special is a good, basic pizza with sausage. The Favorite is a good call and has pepperoni and mushrooms. Anything beyond that is your gamble.

Rosamunde Sausage Grill - San Francisco

Haight St 545, 94117 San Francisco

30-06-2008

Aside from great, inexpensive sausages (vegetarian, too) for lunch, Rosamunde offers great burgers once a week to their loyal followers.

Tuesday Burgers! Order ahead, because they take a while to make. After waiting to order, we waited another 50 minutes for two cheeseburgers. No joke.

But was it worth it? Yes. It was a fabulous burger, smothered in grilled onions and cheese. The vegetables were fresh, the bun was perfect. It was worth waiting near an hour for.

And since they’re right next door to Toronado, you can grab a beer while waiting. It makes passing the time far less grueling.

By the way…they sell out. You have been warned.

Beretta - San Francisco

Valencia Street 1199, 94110 San Francisco

30-06-2008

I had brunch on a Saturday at Beretta, and ordered one of the three items on the menu that were considered breakfast fare…mushroom omelette, pancetta omelette, and french toast.

The pancetta omelette was good, albeit a little oily/greasy/buttery. It was accompanied by a spoonful of what looked like pan-fried potatoes, which were lightly fried in garlic and oil. The price was right…$9.00.

The regular menu had a lot more to choose from, including pizzas and pastas. If they expanded their brunch menu to more than three items, I’d recommend it. However, three items does not a brunch make.

The $2.50 lemonade, however, was truly one of the best I’ve ever had. That bartender needs a raise.
