Tayyabs - Whitechapel
83-89 Fieldgate St., Tower Hamlets, London E1 1JU

Just eat as many of the lamb chops as you possibly can.
And be prepared for a queue/bunfight.
Camino - Kings Cross
3 Varnishers Yard, The Regents Quarter, London N1 9FD

Hygiene. That's what Camino is. It's in one of the fairly-recently-done-up parts of Kings Cross and is full of office types eating olives with some mildly overpriced and unsurprisingly average wine each evening.
However it is nicely set back from the hustle and bustle of its surrounding areas, and the tapas is acceptable for the London.
Rodizio Rico - Islington
77-78 Upper Street, Islington, London N1 0NU
10-06-2010
The trick to Rodizio Rico is to get there when it's actually pretty empty. If that's the case then you'll get richer pickings from all the lovely BBQ that gets brought round by the waiters.
If it's busy and you're a long way from the grill, then you'll only get to see lots of other people tucking into their lovely meat while you have to pick through the chicken hearts they didn't want.
Also, don't over-do the salad cart thing. It's not much better than Harvester was back in the day. The meat's the treat here.
PizzaExpress - London Bridge
4 Borough High Street, Southwark, London SE1 9QR
10-06-2010
Hard to find from the bridge (it's sort of underneath it).
Totally standard Pizza Express experience. Unfortunately there aren't many other places nearby to get a proper pizza in Southwark, so if you're forced to go here for a work do or something, be safe in the knowledge you can nip out for a pie and pint down the road.
Katzenjammers - Southwark
24 Southwark Street, London SE1 1TY

Raucous beery subterranean fun.
Surprisingly there aren't many genuinely awesome watering holes around Borough Market, and since it opened a few months back, K-Js has become our haunt of choice.
They do the important stuff: sausage, steins and a good fresh pretzel.
Real Greek - Clerkenwell
140-141 St John St, Clerkenwell, London EC1V 4UA
10-06-2010
Absolutely no reason to go here. The Real Greek has become the GBK of greek food and they cropping up all over town at a crazy pace.
This Clerkenwell branch. as Chris points out, is surrounded by a plethora of more interesting options that serve better food made with more passion.
Avoid.
Orrery - Marylebone

An unpronounceably fantastic Conran joint.
It went a little something like this:
- "Let's go for lunch at Orrery."
- "Orr errr whaaa?"
- "ORRR ERRR REEEEE."
- "Pardon?"
- "It's Conran."
- "Oooh. Go on then. Spell it first."
Very clean in all respects, as you would expect from the man, and it's tucked away at the North end of Marylebone High St which just tickles that posh London vibe that other roads can't reach.
There's lots of other similarly priced and similarly excellent establishments in the area, but if you fancy an unfussy, elegant, French lunch then give it a go.
Cookbook Cafe - Mayfair
1 Hamilton Place Park Lane, Belgravia, London W1J 7QY
15-04-2010
Another lucky Qyper here.
I don't spend enough time in hotels. I feel like I'm missing out on a whole other world of fantastic bars and restaurants. The Cookbook Cafe is yet another example of how I've been missing out by ignoring them all this time.
The amazing thing about the brunch here is that they're really putting the lunch into proceedings. It's a proper 3-4 course affair with copious amounts of bubbles, bloody mary's and top quality coffee to get you through all the food.
First course is an excellently stocked breakfast bar, complete with flawless sashimi, salads, cheeses and meats. Following that you've got your more traditional breakfast fare: wonderful pancakes, the best malted waffles in town and an extremely serviceable eggs benedict.
Then, there's the lunch part. The beautiful lamb and mash was the standout dish for me, washed down with an expertly poured blackberry bellini. And more coffee.
Although I was too stuffed to take full advantage of the dessert array, the custard was the winner. Soft, sweet and french.
I can't recommend the Cookbook Cafe highly enough for a group blowout brunch. They're a wonderfully attentive group running it and deserve their accolades.
Guerilla Burgers - Marylebone
35 James St, London W1U 1EA
18-02-2010
Oh dear. We're not off to a good start.
Guerilla Burgers opened this week, and we popped in for an evening burger on their second night.
You can still smell the paint on the walls and it's nestled on James St where Tootsie's used to be: a culinary black hole of touristic medicocrity. So keeping its youth, inexperience and location in mind, let's see how they did.
Despite a friend being able to order a medium/rare burger earlier in the day (and enjoying it too), I was denied the same patty treatment and proffered the 'health and safety' excuse. Irritating.
Of course when they did show up (roughly 25 minutes later), they were hideously, unforgivably overcooked. Literally crunchy on the outside of the patty. Arid in texture despite pouring all the sauce I had to hand.
This is a heinous crime when your raison d'etre is making burgers, and a hefty proportion of your overlong menu is given over to a poorly written quasi-diatribe on what makes 'the perfect burger'.
PS: it's not burning it.
The burger itself is served in a metal dish (the kind you would typically get a curry served in) with the condiments on the side. The buns were neatly toasted, but my companion simply stated through dried-out lips "I could have cleaned my bath with that burger".
It doesn't stop there, they serve up crinkle cut chips. Like the ones out of the freezer you used to get round your best mate's house when you were nine years old. And they haven't changed.
The fish tacos are also a country mile away from what fish tacos should be. They're marinaded salmon, with no coating and shop-bought tzatziki in there too. And were cold.
There are some enormous menu issues going on here. It's too long and unfocused and the copywriter needs to start again.
Check out the PDF on the site and witness the layout issues and bizarre menu choices (the LA burger has cottage cheese in it, burger sauce is called 'Russian Tarragon Dressing', sliders are called skaters for some incomprehensible reason, I could go on).
Saving graces?
Well the staff were very much full of first-week perk, which would have made us feel guilty about complaining about the food. They were trying really hard, and I can't blame them for what came out of the kitchen, although arguably a quality control process should be implemented to stop overcooked meat going out.
If they sort out the menu and do some proper testing I might give it another go, but when you've got Byron within schlepping distance, then I can't think of a good reason to go here.
The thing is, it won't really matter if the food doesn't get any better. James Street serves the post-Selfridges tourist crowd, and it will make no difference to them if whingy blogger types like me continue to opine Byron's simple genius over Guerilla Burgers.
The Counter Cafe - Londres
7 Roach Road, Hackney Wick, London E3 2PA
28-01-2010
There's out-of-the-way.
And then there's the Counter Cafe.
Nestled in a dim, drab and remote part of Hackney Wick, past the industrial estate, under the bridge and miles away from any other human life, is this small, hip Antipodean cafe.
If you can figure out how to get here (and believe me, it will require several modes of transport, a map, some supplies and plenty of grit and determination), it's a hidden gem. Similar to the Pavilion in Victoria Park, they make wonderful eggs benedict, fry-ups and more served with lots of great coffee.
So if you're in Hackney and have a sense of adventure, then definitely go here for brunch.
