ristorante don giò - Milão

via corio 3, Milano

28-01-2011

An Italian friend took me to this local restaurant when I was visiting Milan. It's off the tourist trail and not the kind of place you'd easily find without a bit of local knowledge.

The restaurant is really homely, and very unassuming and not pretentious. Welcoming, helpful staff and menu's in English make it easy to take your pick of the menu.

It's mostly meat based, there are plenty of vegetarian options too, (perhaps 20% of the pasta dishes are veggie) but no fish/seafood options, perhaps 1 fish dish on the menu.

The Pasta all home-made and seemingly unique. If you're English then forget your pre-conceptions of what Fusilli should be like. This is very different! The Negroni pasta special was also an interesting alternative to spaghetti or spaghettoni.

Definitely try the Mozzarella wrapped around cream for a 2nd course - deliciously unhealthy!

Reasonable priced house wine help round off a lovely meal in this friendly establishment.

Soho Thai - Soho

Very disappointing. Despite the many positive reviews I was not impressed by the food or service here.
Starters deep fried with dull sauces.
Veggie Green curry was served cold and with poor quantity and quality of veg in it.
Chicken was so fatty it was more like Duck.
Over-priced drinks.
No ambiance in the restaurant.
I wouldn't go back

I can't rate this place enough. Great food, great prices and great service. The food is very Turkish and ample portions and for the price offers great value for money. The locals know it and love it making getting a table more and more difficult! Their lunch offers are awesome value.

Skylon - South Bank

Royal Festival Hall, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX

I visited Skylon regularly when it first launched and I was very impressed with it every single time.

Recently though I'm disappointed to see the quality go downhill fast and the prices getting increased beyond reasonable.

On the positive side:
- The view is premium and one of the best in London.
- Tables are well-spaced.
- The staff are always polite and professional

On the downside:
- The staff seem `too busy` all the time which means they dump the food on your table and then are off to do the next table. There's no attention to any of the diners.

- The cocktails are more than 50% ice which is disappointing.

- The wines are over-priced for what you get.

- However, my main gripe is that for the 3-course fixed price of £45 you expect the best. Unfortunately this has not been the case for the last few visits: I've found the food to be served cold, portions getting smaller, and when I quizzed why my fish was so salty I was surprised to hear "because it lives in the sea". I suspect more likely that the chef had an accident. Either way, I don't expect sub-standard food for that kind of price.

I like to use Skylon as a `special occasion` restaurant but when you consider the quality of the food for the price they charge there are many better options in London to choose from.

An indian `cafe` and delivery service that mixes traditional indian cuisine with British favourites.

All of the dishes are excellent standard cooked with fresh quality ingredients and no excessive use of oil like some indian restaurants tend to do these days.

Economical and extremely tasty!

Giraffe Restaurant - Spitalfields - City of London

Crispin Place, Spitalfields, London E1 6DW

My experience differs massively from the review above. I had a terrible time in this place. Waiting 45 mins for food was not good, and we were told “we are busy, so you have to expect to wait.” It was only about 50% full too.

The food, when it arrived, was good. But definitely NOT huge. The quality was there, but I was disappointed with the size of portions.

One plus point was the smoothies, but at £3.50 a pop they should be good!

Maybe it is better for families, but I was not impressed.

This is such a cool little Vietnamese restaurant. Decor is really impressive, there is a relaxed vibe in here and it smells lovely with the aroma of josticks throughout.

The food is no let down either with an extensive menu though their prawn dishes excel. They even serve Frogs Legs if you want to try them.

A good option is to order a range of starters instead of a main, this way you can sample much more of their wares!

Healthy, organic meat and veg, fresh fish, and great service. No MSG. Best chinese take-away in South London!

Phil Chambers What does chinese taste like without MSG?!

starz Less gloupy (sic), much healthier and much tastier!
