53 Am - Notting Hill
53 Golborne Road, London W10 5NR

Justin at 53 AM is terrific. He’s intuitive and thoughtful. On minimal instruction he gave my medium length hair just what I wanted.
He is up to date with style and I am sure he could provide any look desired. I trusted him completely. His cuts are well balanced and precise. My cut grew out keeping its style, for me that’s the mark of a good cut.

Generally I love going to the hairdressers. The experience is always mixed with a little fear and excitement when it’s your first time at a new salon, or having a new treatment, for me it was both. I had read many great reviews on Taylor Taylor so I decided to give it a try.
I liked the attention to detail of a phone reminder of my appointment the day before. On arrival I was offered a delectable array of drinks from the bar while I waited.
The decor is plush, more spacious upstairs than downstairs. I thought it rather dark downstairs where my colour treatment was performed. I kept straining to see in the dim light and shadows the details that my stylist was pointing out.
He discussed the possible outcome before proceeding and was very confident but honest about the potential results. I’d never had my hair coloured in a salon and was apprehensive to say the least. I decided to have only a semi-permanent colour applied. I was thinking at least it would fade out and all would be good. I know I’m a bit of a weeny, but I finally gave in to the experience of a professional colour treatment. Then there is the wait to have the colour set. One must be patient for beauty. After a short time I was lead to the shrine, the gold tiled sanctum of hair washing. A very nice young man did the washing out, it wasn’t his fault but, wow, do they have to use high grade toxic paint remover on my skin to remove the residue of dye from my forehead. Yikes, that burned. Mind you, if no one else complained it might be just that I have very sensitive skin. Maybe I should bring a jar of petroleum jelly to apply to my skin before the treatment. It works to keep the dye from sticking to the skin, at least it does when you apply colour at home. Salon dye is different, but still, it hurt.
The cost was £50, it lasted for a very long time, and I got loads of compliments. I have to admit that the method of taking the dye from my skin is what keeps me from going back, and it’s been a few months since my trip to Taylor Taylor. I should find a way to remedy this problem as the stylist did a very nice job.
Father's Office - Santa Monica

Sometime ago 5 chefs from around the US were on an American morning show making burgers. The intention to have the show hosts do a taste test of all the burgers and judge the best. Father’s Office won.
I have heard that since they opened another location of Father’s Office the quality has suffered. I can only speak for the Montana location, the last time I ate there the burger was very good. The burger consists of 3? top cuts of meat which makes it different than just using ground beef. It’s topped with blue cheese and Rocket/Arugula, and sits on a non hamburger style bun.
A while ago it was decided that the tiny space needed fewer people inside so supposedly the fire department instituted a rule of occupancy allowing only so many people inside at one time.
Montana is the business street in this area of Santa Monica. It has shops and restaurants but is lacking in good drinking holes. Maybe it’s intentional so those noisy rabble-rousers leg it over to the promenade.
In-N-Out Burger - Los Angeles
South Sepulveda Boulevard 9149, 90045 Los Angeles

Do you know how Homer Simpson gets the special sauce for hamburgers? He puts mayo in the sun. That’s not part of the secret menu at In-N-Out. All fresh and clean, made before your eyes.
For fast food it is a very good burger. Probably the best of the fast food burgers. There is something about this burger that doesn’t make you wish you had not eaten it, you know that feeling?
The melting of the cheese and the special sauce glues the whole thing together nicely. Fries are good too, thin and well done, not limp and anaemic.

I am always searching for certain European brands I get attached to. I love it when I find someplace that stocks them.
It’s a small store, and the staff (when I was there) really know the product range. Their opinion is helpful when you try to edit your choices on products you have never used before. They stock the full range of brands like Vichy and Phyto. The testers are there to sniff and try out. Plus there is a selection for men.
Carluccio's - Marylebone

I really enjoy the pasta dish called Penne Giardiniera, the deep fried spinach balls are terrific. I could order them on their own. I had ordered this dish in Hampstead twice and both times it was good. There is a creamy sauce that coats the pasta and vegetables, it’s rich but not too, and very necessary. I was in the Oxford Street area and was famished, the Carluccio’s at 8 Market Place was packed but I squeezed in and ordered the Penne dish again but was so disappointed. The creamy sauce was watery and the whole dish was lacking in flavour, not at all the same as in Hampstead. This is one of their signature dishes.

Known for their seductive 'toe cleavage’, ballet flats by London Sole are in my opinion the prettiest ballet flats. The selection is enormous, and the only way one gets out of this little gift box of a store without buying everything one sees is finding that not all the shoes fit the same. These shoes make every foot look good, they are delicate, feminine, well made and stylish. Not all stores carry the same styles, the London stores (called French Sole in the UK) have styles the US stores don’t carry.
Ace Hotel - West Kensington
16-22 Gunterstone Road, London W14 9BX

The white facade of four joining Victorian townhouses on a quiet residential street belie a modern interior. Fully modernized this hotel/hostel is clean and efficient. In the beginning I thought it a bit out of the way, once you know where you are it’s a snap getting around. The tube and buses are right around the corner. One night I jumped on a bus at Kensington High Street and was at the hotel in a very short amount of time.
Hostels are hostels, if you need to save money and choose to sleep in the bunk bed dorms these rooms with ensuite showers are super clean. The private bedrooms are very nice, simple upscale decor in white. The communal areas are bright and cheerful. There’s a hot tub bubbling quietly on the patio outside, tables and chairs are everywhere. Staff is cordial and professional.
Fairfax District/Fairfax Village - Los Angeles
South Fairfax Avenue 115, 90036 Los Angeles

The area known as the Fairfax District/Fairfax Village borders La Brea to Doheny and Melrose to Wilshire. The Farmers Market/The Grove, CBS Studios, and a multitude of shops are all within walking distance if you ditch your car. Los Angeles is not much of a walking kind of town, but I found it rather easy to walk down Fairfax to the Grove, wander around, shop the stores, be a tourist, see a film and find something to eat. Sitting along Fairfax and a must do in LA, Canter’s Deli, for classics like the Matzo Ball Soup, people rave about the bakery. Grocery shopping at Whole Foods is directly across the street from The Grove and a pharmacy is next to it. Neigborhoods or areas of interest are sometimes difficult to spot in LA, that’s why when driving or walking along Fairfax and you see The Farmer’s Daughter Hotel it stands out with its whimsical blue and white gingham plaid facade and faux country decor. I have not stayed at this hotel but on looks alone it deserves a mention. I took a peek inside at the interior and the friendly reception staff were gracious and keen to promote the hotel. I wish I’d seen city guides like LAist before I made my trip. There is so much I feel I left unexplored, but then the sunlight dazzels and intoxicates and I go to the beach.

Malibu Seafood/Fresh Fish Market/Patio Cafe
Why are there so few bars, restaurants and clubs on the beach in Los Angeles? Luckily someone drove me here or I would have driven right past this tiny building that sits directly across from the ocean. Malibu Seafood is on U.S Route 101, Pacific Coast Highway, just called The PCH.
Jump on the PCH in Santa Monica at California Blvd., head out past Pepperdine University. There is no warning that it’s coming up, so once you crest the hill it will be on your right. Be prepared to make a sharp turn into the drive. This is after all a freeway and people are driving at freeway speeds.
I always get the fish and chips at Malibu Seafood. It’s difficult to find fish and chips, so when I crave it, this is where I go when in Los Angeles. The menu is extensive and fish can be cooked in various ways. There are tacos and salads even lobster. The fresh fish market is in the same small building.
It is a bit of a trek to Malibu Seafood but the location is irresistible and difficult to leave, lingering on one of the patios is pure joy. They had a BYOB policy, call the cafe and inquire about this. I have seen people bring their own wine, a table cloth (maybe even a candle) and make a evening on one of the top tier patio tables looking out over the ocean. Bliss.
