The Royal oak - Edimburgo

1 Infirmary Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1LT

28-04-2008

A brilliant folk pub. Upstairs is quite small - often good folk session there if you can get a seat or don’t mind standing. In the downstairs bar there is great music, too, and you’re more likely to sit down.

Sandy Bell's - Edimburgo

25 Forrest Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2QH

28-04-2008

Great place to go if you like folk music. This pub has live folk sessions from about nine, or sometime after, every night. Have heard some really good music in here. The staff over the years have been really helpful. It’s a very traditional pub, and has a brilliant atmosphere because of that.

The Engine Shed - Edimburgo

19 St. Leonard's Lane, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9SH

28-04-2008

This cafe has really nice vegetarian food and isn’t too expensive. It’s really spacious so there shouldn’t be too much problem with getting a seat, even though it’s popular. Lovely organic bread is baked on the premises, so you can leave with a loaf.

Armchair Books - Edimburgo

72 West Port, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2LE

28-04-2008

This second-hand bookshop is packed full ceiling to floor with all kinds of books. It is like a little world all on its own and a great haven on a rainy day. There are bargain books outside in boxes, or inside when the weather’s bad. If you can’t find a book, someone will most likely look it up for you.

Word Power Books - Edimburgo

43 West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9DB

28-04-2008

Interesting little bookshop that seems to specialise in social topics and human rights. There are sometimes evening events on with authors, and there is an email list that you can join, which gives notices when events are on.

Susie's Wholefood Diner - Edimburgo

51 West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9DB

28-04-2008

Lovely vegetarian cafe that serves good big portions of wholesome meals. If you can’t decide what to have at the counter, you can pick and mix, having 2 half portions of main courses for instance, or a main course and a couple of salads. There is a noticeboard, and often artists exhibit on the walls.

Kebab Mahal - Edimburgo

7 Nicolson Square, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9BH

28-04-2008

Really good curries for cheap prices. This is a takeaway but there are some seats in the back. The portions are good sized and if you are veggie the veg side dishes are nice as a main course. The garlic naans are really delicious.

Tanners - Edimburgo

459 Lanark Road, Juniper Green, Edinburgh, Scotland EH14 5BA

28-04-2008

Roomy local pub with restaurant. The TV is often on with sports but not too loud. The staff seem quite helpful generally. Lovely location for walks by the water of Leith. There is a car park round the back, and it is a really short walk from the bus stop (bus no 44) as well.

Maxies Cafe - Edimburgo

Deanhaugh Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland EH4 1LY

28-04-2008

This is a good place to relax in - a bright space with a wide selection of teas including fair trade and organic, and cakes, sandwiches, soup, etc. It’s quite a popular place. The prices are not too bad, either. Also, it is in a brilliant district for charity shop shopping, as there are several shops in the same street that often have great bargains in them.
This is a daytime cafe and closes in the evening.

Edinburgh Japanese Church Service - Edimburgo

Wilson Memorial Building, Moira Terrace, Portobello Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH7 6RY

28-04-2008

Church Service in Japanese every Sunday. English interpretation is provided via a headphone system as well. This is quite an international group, with Koreans, Russians, Scottish, English and Japanese. There is a lunch provided after the service each week with mostly Japanese food. Very delicious! This is a great place to get involved in the Japanese community in Edinburgh and explore Christianity. Everybody welcome. Even though there is not a Sunday School facility at the moment children are very welcome. The service is short, then afterwards there is chance for them to enjoy the lunch and play. For more info please contact Yuki Williams on: yuki_williams@yahoo.co.jp or 0131 672 0975. There is also a weekly Bible Study in Japanese at Faith Mission College on Fridays at 7pm.
